En 2066, según el Instituto Nacional de Estadística, el 34% de la población española tendrá más de sesenta y cinco años. Los avances de la medicina y los esfuerzos de las instituciones por promover unas mejores condiciones de vida son, entre otros factores, los responsables de este aumento poblacional. Los derechos de la población mayor, garantizados por el ordenamiento jurídico, han facilitado la instauración de unas condiciones de vida favorables. El derecho a la salud, el derecho a una vida digna e independiente, el derecho a la participación social, a la igualdad de oportunidades, etc., conforman un marco jurídico que sustenta la estructura de un Estado, comprometido con el bienestar. Estamos ante un cambio de paradigma. La vejez ya no se percibe como algo negativo, los estereotipos y prejuicios sociales han sido sustituidos por una visión más positiva. La «longevidad» es el nuevo axioma que describe una vejez llena de oportunidades. Sin embargo, no existe un envejecimiento activo sin salud. El deporte, entendido en sentido amplio, se ha convertido junto con otros hábitos en el mejor aliado de la salud. Los beneficios que conlleva la práctica deportiva para la población mayor, tanto en el plano físico como en el cognitivo y/o social, han sido suficientemente demostrados por la ciencia. Una práctica deportiva regular reduce el deterioro físico, proporciona mayor autonomía e independencia y como consecuencia mejora la calidad de vida y la productividad de estas personas. En este libro se analiza el marco jurídico de los derechos de la tercera edad, asociándolo al deporte. Los autores recorren el camino que va, desde los planteamientos teóricos —las recomendaciones y líneas de actuación estratégicas—, hasta los desempeños prácticos —la oferta de programas y espacios para el desarrollo del deporte—. Con dicho planteamiento se espera el interés, no solo de juristas, sino también de gestores y en general, de personas que tengan la tarea o vocación de promover el deporte como derecho para este sector de la población. Los autores, Julián Hontangas, Juan A. Mestre y Francisco Orts, son reconocidos expertos en Derecho y gestión deportiva, ámbito éste en el que han desarrollado una extraordinaria labor profesional, docente e investigadora, que se ha traducido en varios libros, algunos de los cuales están publicados en esta misma colección.

El objetivo de este libro es presentar una síntesis actualizada de las evidencias que apoyan el uso del ejercicio físico mo terapia en poblaciones que se ha considerado conveniente denominar especiales, tanto por su prevalencia, como por sus características. Los diferentes capítulos, apoyados en una gran diversidad de diseños metodológicos, se centran en aportar recomendaciones y sugerencias para la prescripción del ejercicio físico en estos grupos. Para este fin es posible diferenciar dos grandes bloques en el libro incidiendo en los posibles riesgos de ete tipo de práctica para la salud, y po otro, un bloque centrado en diversas poblaciones especiales entre las que destacaría la práctica para personas con discapacidad, para personas mayores y otras poblaciones clónicas como la obesidad, el cáncer de mama, la fibromialgia o aquellos pacientes afectados por dolor lumbar cómun. Confiamos en que este libro pueda aportar una evidencia adicional a nuestro ámbito contribuyendo a un mayor entendimiento del papel del ejercicio en la prevención de un amplio rango de condiciones pero donde para incrementar los beneficios que éste puede ofrecer, se destaca la necesaria acutación conjunta de todos los profesionales y las propias familias de los afectados.
