Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite being proven ineffective as a coercive tool or deterrent, the international community has actively withheld recognition in numerous instances of territorial conquest since the 1930s. Joseph O'Mahoney systematically analyses 21 case studies - including the Manchurian Crisis, the Turkish invasion of Cyprus and Russia's annexation of Crimea - to explore why so many states have adopted a policy of non-recognition of the spoils of war. By drawing on historical sources including recently declassified archival documents, he evaluates states' decision-making. He develops a new theory for non-recognition as a symbolic sanction aimed at reproducing common knowledge of the rules of international behaviour.

Book excerpt: "The Complete Works of Zacharias Tanee Fomum on Prayer (Volume 2)” contains the following books: 1) The Art of Intercession 2) The Practice of Intercession 3) Practical Spiritual Warfare Through Prayer 4) Life-Changing Thoughts on Prayer (Volume 1) 5) The Overthrow of Principalities and Powers 6) The Prophecy of the Overthrow of the Satanic Prince of Douala 7) The Prophecy of the Overthrow of the Prince of Cameroon Having left the ABCs of prayer behind, this volume deals with the intricacies of intercession, spiritual warfare, and the overthrow of satanic princes ruling entire nations behind the scenes. It tackles both the art and practice of intercession. Simply put, intercession is both the art and practice by a righteous, blameless, and absolutely consecrated person, to accept, stand in the gap, and defend a person or people that God has targeted for destruction due to their brazen and sustained violation of His will. The Lord’s response to Moses’ intercession and entreaty for the children of Israel was swift and dramatic. The Bible says, “Then the Lord relented and did not bring on his people the disaster he had threatened”(Exodus 32:14). That was intercession in both its art and practice. So many advanced believers in Christ don’t even believe that satanic princes exist. They exist. They are so real, so devastating in their work and so strangulating in their grip of people and their affairs, that you can only ignore them to your own undoing. Daniel battled these satanic princes all his adult life in exile in the Babylonian, Persian, and Median realms. He did so through strategic, prevailing, and sustained prayer and fasting (Daniel 10:1-21; 11:1). He battled in prayer and fasting until the satanic princes of Persia and Greece, which were opposing God’s purposes, were overcame, overturned, and overthrown. We send this second prayer volume out with a cry to the Lord that He should use it to teach the church of the Firstborn the intricacies of intercession and spiritual warfare. In this age of atheism, agnosticism, humanism, espionage, robots, sophisticated gadgets, and the Internet, there was never a time we needed intercession and spiritual warfare like now.

Book excerpt: The Civil War had been hard on everyone, but Celia Weston felt as if she personally had taken the brunt of it. Left alone on what had once been her family's beautiful estate, she had to scrimp and scrape just to survive, reduced to living like an animal while she tried to take care of her beloved mother, whose mind had been crippled by her great losses.Trey Oaks had been occupied by all sorts during those long years, but the worst was its last occupier Aaron Denehy, who thought that possession was a lot more than nine tenths of the law, and that Celia's body and soul came with the land he claimed as his own.Celia found herself subjugated by Aaron, treated no better than a lady of easy virtue, barely better than the slaves the war had freed. He spanked, belted or paddled her at the least sign of resistance, but brought her to the heights of ecstasy that she hadn't known existed before his touch. And there was nowhere for Celia to escape to. It was her home, but he was the Master.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DON'T GET ON YOUR KNEES WITHOUT IT! This book is the sequel and companion to The Art of Intercession. The current volume, as its title suggests, focuses on the more practical aspects of intercession: the use of time, discipline, goals, fasting, resisting the devil, the use of the Bible and knowledge of facts. From the practical, Professor Fomum leads us through the levels of intercession - from the beginner to the advanced. He goes on to give practical lessons on high level spiritual warfare against principalities and powers - for those who are called. There are sections on intercessory prayer chains and a full-time ministry of intercession. All this from the pen of one who has himself advanced through the school of calloused knees. If God is calling you to be an intercessor, this is the single best, most practical manual to get you started or advancing on your knees.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume offers an in-depth study of heritage and warfare from the perspective of defence studies. The book focuses on how, in different contexts, heritage can be a catalyst and target of conflict, an obstacle to stabilisation, and a driver of peace-building. It documents the changing role of heritage – in terms of both exploitation and protection – in various military capabilities, theatres, and operations. With particular concern for the areas of subthreshold and hybrid warfare, stabilisation, cultural relationships, human security, and disaster response, the volume reviews the historical relationship between heritage and armed conflict, including the roles of embedded archaeologists, safeguarding of ethics, and dislodgement and destruction of material culture. Various chapters in the book also demonstrate the value of understanding how state and non-state actors exploit cultural heritage across different defence postures and within both subthreshold and proxy warfare in order to achieve military, political, economic, and diplomatic advantages. This book will be of interest to students of defence studies, heritage studies, anthropology and security studies in general, as well as military practitioners.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Students of comparative politics have long faced a vexing dilemma: how can social scientists draw broad, applicable principles of political order from specific historical examples? In Analytic Narratives, five senior scholars offer a new and ambitious methodological response to this important question. By employing rational-choice and game theory, the authors propose a way of extracting empirically testable, general hypotheses from particular cases. The result is both a methodological manifesto and an applied handbook that political scientists, economic historians, sociologists, and students of political economy will find essential. In their jointly written introduction, the authors frame their approach to the origins and evolution of political institutions. The individual essays that follow demonstrate the concept of the analytic narrative--a rational-choice approach to explain political outcomes--in case studies. Avner Greif traces the institutional foundations of commercial expansion in twelfth-century Genoa. Jean-Laurent Rosenthal analyzes how divergent fiscal policies affected absolutist European governments, while Margaret Levi examines the transformation of nineteenth-century conscription laws in France, the United States, and Prussia. Robert Bates explores the emergence of a regulatory organization in the international coffee market. Finally, Barry Weingast studies the institutional foundations of democracy in the antebellum United States and its breakdown in the Civil War. In the process, these studies highlight the economic role of political organizations, the rise and deterioration of political communities, and the role of coercion, especially warfare, in political life. The results are both empirically relevant and theoretically sophisticated. Analytic Narratives is an innovative and provocative work that bridges the gap between the game-theoretic and empirically driven approaches in political economy. Political historians will find the use of rational-choice models novel; theorists will discover arguments more robust and nuanced than those derived from abstract models. The book improves on earlier studies by advocating--and applying--a cross-disciplinary approach to explain strategic decision making in history.

Kennedy, to name a few--oversaw some of the republic's bloodiest years. Perhaps it's because they looked out for important political causes. Or maybe they just looked out for themselves. This ... book puts some of America's greatest leaders under the microscope, [positing that] their calls for war, usually remembered as brave and noble, were in fact selfish and convenient"--

Book excerpt: Emergence of the modern science of international law is usually attributed to Grotius and other somewhat heroic ‘founders of international law.’ This book offers a more worldly explanation why it was developed mostly by German writers in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
