Book excerpt: Voucher-based specimen records as well as well-substantiated photographic records help inform the distribution and conservation status of wildlife species. For the five skunk species (Family Mephitidae) that occur in Texas, documenting occurrence records through all available sources is vital to understanding the status of the species. In this survey of records, we report on: rabies-negative skunk specimens submitted to the Texas Department of State Health Services and deposited in the Angelo State Natural History Collections; specimens collected in association with field studies; specimens salvaged either as vehicle-killed animals or from wildlife rehabilitation facilities; and identifiable images from camera-trap studies. Research-grade observations from iNaturalist also were included from counties previously lacking a record. Finally, databases from systematic collections of mammals were searched for additional specimen records. Identification for most specimens was based on morphological features, but for specimens at potentially sympatric locations for Spilogale interrupta and Spilogale leucoparia, additional molecular analyses were used to confirm species. Reported herein are five county records and a range extension for Conepatus leuconotus, 39 county records for Mephitis mephitis, six county records and a range extension for S. leucoparia, and four county records for S. interrupta. Nonvouchered photographic records are presented for C. leuconotus (19), Mephitis mephitis (41), S. leucoparia (5), and S. interrupta (13). Also reported are five recent nonvouchered photographic records of Mephitis macroura, a species not confirmed in the state since 1999.

Book excerpt: We studied home-range size, home-range overlap and use of habitat in a population of striped skunks Mephitis mephitis in eastern Tennessee. Variables determined to influence home-range size were season and body weight: skunks had larger ranges in the spring than in winter and heavier females had larger ranges. Habitat, sex and sample sizes of radio-fixes did not correlate with home-range size. All home ranges overlapped by 1.4-100% of the range area. There was no pattern of greater intersexual than intrasexual overlap; this differs from many other carnivore studies. Movements of individuals and distribution of den sites indicated that striped skunks, irrespective of sex or size, prefer edge habitat in comparison to forest or field.

Book excerpt: Circadian and seasonal activity of sympatric hog-nosed (Conepatus leuconotus, n = 12) and striped skunks (Mephitis mephitis, n = 9) were monitored via activity-sensor equipped radiocollars from 15 October 2010 to 20 November 2011 in west-central Texas. Temperature, average and maximum wind speed, barometric pressure, dew point, moon phase, and time of sunset/sunrise were recorded to evaluate which factors influence skunk activity. Both species exhibited predominantly nocturnal activity patterns with some daytime activity across all seasons. Onset and cessation of activity was highly correlated with sunset and sunrise. Activity during the day was documented in both species for all seasons, and the greatest degree of daytime activity was found in hog-nosed skunks in the spring. Activity patterns were significantly different between species and seasons. Moon-phase, season, time before sunrise/sunset, environmental temperature, barometric pressure, and maximum windspeed were all shown to significantly impact skunk activity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cysticercosis, an infection caused by the cystic larvae of the pork tapeworm Taenia solium, is one of the most frequent parasitic infections of the human nervous system (neurocysticercosis). It is endemic in most of Latin America, the sub-Saharan Africa, and vast parts of Asia, including the Indian subcontinent. It has also been increasingly diagnosed in developed countries because of migration of people from endemic zones and exposure in travelers. The life cycle involves the development of the adult tapeworm in the human small intestine (after ingesting infected pork with cysts) and larval infection in pig tissues (after ingesting human stools containing the eggs of the tapeworm). Humans get infected by the fecal-oral route, most often from a direct contact with an asymptomatic Taenia carrier. Most common clinical presentations are seizures (particularly late-onset seizures), chronic headaches, and intracranial hypertension. However, cysticerci can locate anywhere in the human nervous system, thus potentially causing almost any neurological syndrome and making clinical diagnosis a difficult task. Neuroimaging is the main diagnostic tool, and specific serology confirms the diagnosis and helps to define the diagnosis when images are unclear. Factors such as location (extraparenchymal versus intraparenchymal), number, size and evolutive stage of the parasites determine the clinical manifestations, therapeutic approach, and prognosis. Management includes symptomatic drugs (analgesics, antiepileptic drugs, anti-inflammatory agents) and in many cases cysticidal drugs, either albendazole or praziquantel. In recent years, efforts have focused on transmission control and potential elimination in endemic regions.
