Book excerpt: The National Science Foundation has a long supported the use of "Wisconsin Fast Plants" (rapid cycling "B. rapa") in the teaching of Biology (K-12). I believe that the opportunity is at hand for biologists to significantly extend past efforts made by our colleagues at the K-12 level to higher education. Biology faculty can realize the many practical benefits of RCBr as a model organism with known genotype and phenotype for student research in the lab and in the field. One area of investigative student experience that is significantly lacking, is the development of ecological investigations using Fast Plants. Here, I demonstrate how I incorporated Fast Plants into three college courses to provide students with: (1) An authentic and enriching research experience. (2) A link between "classroom and professional practice". (3) A connection between what students read and reality. (4) Experience with Fast Plants as a model system for their research and teaching. (Contains 6 color photographs, 2 bar graphs, 2 tables, a list of 5 "helpful publications," and a list of 6 "helpful resources.").

Book excerpt: Despite their name, Wisconsin Fast Plants (members of the cabbage and mustard family) are used by teachers all over the United States -- because they are ideally suited to short semesters, youthful impatience, and small spaces. This spiral-bound lab book demonstrates all aspects of plant growth and development, while teaching scientific investigation. Activities focus on points in the plant's life cycle, variation and inheritance concepts, and environmental factors. A Science Exploration Flowchart in each activity stresses important process skills.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The introduction of plant and animal agriculture represents one of the most important milestones in human evolution. It contributed to the development of cities, alphabets, new technologies, and ultimately to civilizations, but it has also presented a threat to both human health and the environment. Bringing together research from a range of fields including anthropology, archaeology, ecology, economics, entomology, ethnobiology, genetics and geography, this book addresses key questions relating to agriculture. Why did agriculture develop and where did it originate? What are the patterns of domestication for plants and animals? How did agroecosystems originate and spread from their locations of origin? Exploring the cultural aspects of the development of agricultural ecosystems, the book also highlights how these topics can be applied to our understanding of contemporary agriculture, its long-term sustainability, the co-existence of agriculture and the environment, and the development of new crops and varieties.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Researchers in the field of ecological genomics aim to determine how a genome or a population of genomes interacts with its environment across ecological and evolutionary timescales. Ecological genomics is trans-disciplinary by nature. Ecologists have turned to genomics to be able to elucidate the mechanistic bases of the biodiversity their research tries to understand. Genomicists have turned to ecology in order to better explain the functional cellular and molecular variation they observed in their model organisms. We provide an advanced-level book that covers this recent research and proposes future development for this field. A synthesis of the field of ecological genomics emerges from this volume. Ecological Genomics covers a wide array of organisms (microbes, plants and animals) in order to be able to identify central concepts that motivate and derive from recent investigations in different branches of the tree of life. Ecological Genomics covers 3 fields of research that have most benefited from the recent technological and conceptual developments in the field of ecological genomics: the study of life-history evolution and its impact of genome architectures; the study of the genomic bases of phenotypic plasticity and the study of the genomic bases of adaptation and speciation.

Book excerpt: Pan-genomics: Applications, Challenges, and Future Prospects covers current approaches, challenges and future prospects of pan-genomics. The book discusses bioinformatics tools and their applications and focuses on bacterial comparative genomics in order to leverage the development of precise drugs and treatments for specific organisms. The book is divided into three sections: the first, an "overview of pan-genomics and common approaches, brings the main concepts and current approaches on pan-genomics research; the second, “case studies in pan-genomics, thoroughly discusses twelve case, and the last, “current approaches and future prospects in pan-multiomics , encompasses the developments on omics studies to be applied on bacteria related studies. This book is a valuable source for bioinformaticians, genomics researchers and several members of biomedical field interested in understanding further bacterial organisms and their relationship to human health. Covers the entire spectrum of pangenomics, highlighting the use of specific approaches, case studies and future perspectives Discusses current bioinformatics tools and strategies for exploiting pangenomics data Presents twelve case studies with different organisms in order to provide the audience with real examples of pangenomics applicability
