Book excerpt: Revised & Updated Edition! God is love. Crazy, relentless, all-powerful love. Have you ever wondered if we're missing it? It's crazy, if you think about it. The God of the universe—the Creator of nitrogen and pine needles, galaxies and E-minor—loves us with a radical, unconditional, self-sacrificing love. And what is our typical response? We go to church, sing songs, and try not to cuss. Whether you've verbalized it yet or not, we all know something's wrong. Does something deep inside your heart long to break free from the status quo? Are you hungry for an authentic faith that addresses the problems of our world with tangible, even radical, solutions? God is calling you to a passionate love relationship with Himself. Because the answer to religious complacency isn't working harder at a list of do's and don'ts—it's falling in love with God. And once you encounter His love, as Francis describes it, you will never be the same. Because when you're wildly in love with someone, it changes everything. Book excerpt: The Fall by Samuel Lucas We all know the story. Lucifer rebelled against God in Heaven and tried to take His position. Have we ever thought of how that story began? In The Fall, we get a glimpse of what it may have been like in Heaven before Lucifer’s rebellion and the resulting war that is still fought today. The angels of Heaven all share a common love of God, whom they call Father. When Father announces that He will once again begin the process of creation, however, the eyes of a hidden enemy turn towards the Mercy Throne, the seat of power in Heaven. Malkiel is just another angel in the midst of thousands, another face in the crowd. Joined by his friends, Malkiel must combat the first seeds of evil in the original conflict between light and dark. Brother turned against brother, war on an epic scale, and the birth of evil. This is the story of Lucifer’s fall.

Usher Evans comes a smashing continuation of her bestselling modern fantasy series. Picking up six months after the end of Redemption, the final book in the Demon Spring trilogy, Reawakening will leave readers guessing alongside our main characters as they explore the new reality of demons and humans. Demons still walk amongst us, but ever since Bael, king of the monsters, was killed in the Great Demon War, things have been a little topsy-turvy for demon hunters Jack Grenard and Cam Macarro. Jack, alongside the now-human Anya, has been living a semi-retired life in Seattle, as demon hunting vigilantes. But Anya continues to spiral, unsure what to make of her life now that Bael is no longer controlling it. Across the Pacific, Cam Macarro balances her job as the Director for Weapons Development for the International Coalition for Demon Management while secretly dating Lotan, the prince of the wolf shifters nox demons. Lotan wants to take things to the next level, but Cam is dragging her feet–that is, until Lotan is mysteriously kidnapped by unknown forces. Cam recruits Jack and Anya to help bring Lotan back, but the odds are stacked against them in an increasingly dangerous demonic world. But when Anya hears a rumor she might be able to reclaim her former glory, she sets the three of them on a world-spanning dark fantasy adventure that will keep readers guessing until the very end.

Meet Detective Zaniel Havelock, a man with the special ability to communicate directly with angels. A former trained Angel speaker, he devoted his life to serving both the celestial beings and his fellow humans with his gift, but a terrible betrayal compelled him to leave that life behind. Now he’s a cop who is still working on the side of angels. But where there are angels, there are also demons. There’s no question that there’s evil at work when he’s called in to examine the murder scene of a college student—but is it just the evil that one human being can do to another, or is it something more? When demonic possession is a possibility, even angelic protection can only go so far. The race is on to stop a killer before he finds his next victim, as Zaniel is forced to confront his own very personal demons, and the past he never truly left behind. The first in a new series from the author of the Anita Blake and Merry Gentry series.

Book excerpt: The Demonic in the Political Thought of Eusebius of Caesarea explores how Eusebius of Caesarea's ideas about demons interacted with and helped to shape his thought on other topics, particularly political topics Hazel Johannessen builds on and complements recent work on early Christian and early modern demonology. Eusebius' political thought has long drawn the attention of scholars who have identified in some of his works the foundations of later Byzantine theories of kingship. However, Eusebius' political thought has not previously been examined in the light of his views on demons. Moreover, despite frequent references to demons throughout many of Eusebius' works, there has been no comprehensive study of Eusebius' views on demons, until now, as expressed throughout a range of his works. The originality of this study lies both in an initial examination of Eusebius' views on demons and their place in his cosmology, and in the application of the insights derived from this to consideration of his political thought. As a result of this new perspective, Johannessen challenges scholars' traditional characterization of Eusebius as a triumphal optimist. Instead, she draws attention to his concerns about a continuing demonic threat, capable of disrupting humankind's salvation, and presents Eusebius as a more cautious figure than the one familiar to late antique scholarship.

Book excerpt: Bede and the Cosmos examines Bede’s cosmology—his understanding of the universe and its laws. It explores his ideas regarding both the structure and mechanics of the created world and the relationship of that world to its Creator. Beginning with On the Nature of Things and moving on to survey his writings in other genres, it demonstrates the key role that natural philosophy played in shaping Bede’s worldview, and explores the ramifications that this had on his cultural, theological and historical thought. From questions about angelic bodies and the destruction of the world at judgement day, to subtle arguments about free will and the meaning of history, Bede’s fascinating and unique engagement with the natural world is explored in this comprehensive study.

Book excerpt: Thomas Aquinas's Summa Theologica is a monumental work that is widely considered one of the most important texts in the history of philosophy and theology. Divided into three main parts, the book addresses a wide range of theological topics, providing rigorous arguments and insightful analysis. Aquinas's writing style is characterized by its clarity and logical precision, making it accessible to both scholars and general readers. The text's incorporation of interactive links and annotations enhances the reading experience, offering readers a more comprehensive understanding of Aquinas's complex arguments within their historical context. Thomas Aquinas, a highly influential philosopher and theologian, drew upon both Christian doctrine and Aristotelian philosophy to create the Summa Theologica. His deep understanding of both intellectual traditions allowed him to reconcile faith and reason in a way that had a lasting impact on Western thought. Aquinas's dedication to exploring the nature of God and the universe shines through in this comprehensive work, showcasing his intellectual breadth and depth. I highly recommend Summa Theologica to readers interested in delving into the complexities of theological and philosophical discourse. Aquinas's profound insights and meticulous reasoning make this text a must-read for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of the relationship between faith and reason.
