Book excerpt: This book is about Harry, a man who lived a fascinating and charmed life, and it describes how he was affected by dementia. Harry used to say, ÒPaul, I was born lucky. IÕve been lucky all my life!Ó and in many ways this was true. After the German invasion of Poland, Harry was forced into the German Army and of the 36 boys in his class at school, 33 died at Stalingrad. Harry was one of very few men who fought in both the German and British armies in World War II and he somehow came out of it alive, against all the odds. But HarryÕs luck finally ran out when he was diagnosed with dementia, a disease that our society is poorly prepared for. Had I known then what I know now about dementia, then the burden of caring for Harry would have been so much easier to carry. So this book describes HarryÕs life, but it also gives a comprehensive insight into the various forms of dementia and what to expect, which will be very helpful for anyone who is caring for a loved one with this disease.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A Dutch bestseller on dementia with practical advice, highly valued by professional and family caregivers alike." Dementia is an illness that generates a lot of confusion and uncertainty. How do you break it to your father that at 75, he doesn't need to go to work anymore because he retired a decade ago? Or that he must give up driving because he has become a hazard on the roads? Dianca Schüssler is mastering the art of 'sidestepping the truth', gaining a happier father in the process. In her poignant book, she shares her missteps and lessons learned. She delves into the concept of "brain rooms," an accidental discovery that now aids others in engaging meaningfully with dementia patients. This book is also an ode to the caregivers, who sometimes ignore strict rules to make care more humane. Dianca Schüssler is married with two children, and her father is battling dementia. She is deeply invested in uncovering the best way to interact with those afflicted by this condition. They are individuals with rich life experiences from whom we can all learn a great deal. She is frustrated that dementia patients aren't always treated as full human beings, while she continues to learn from and laugh with her father, embracing who he is now. "I still see the jokester in him." "A book on dementia with practical advice, I wish I had known before."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cultural responses to most illnesses differ; dementia is no exception. These responses, together with a society's attitudes toward its elderly population, affect the frequency of dementia-related diagnoses and the nature of treatment. Bringing together essays by nineteen respected scholars, this unique volume approaches the subject from a variety of angles, exploring the historical, psychological, and philosophical implications of dementia. Based on solid ethnographic fieldwork, the essays employ a cross-cultural perspective and focus on questions of age, mind, voice, self, loss, temporality, memory, and affect. Taken together, the essays make four important and interrelated contributions to our understanding of the mental status of the elderly. First, cross-cultural data show the extent to which the aging process, while biologically influenced, is also very much culturally constructed. Second, detailed ethnographic reports raise questions about the behavioral criteria used by health care professionals and laymen for defining the elderly as demented. Third, case studies show how a diagnosis affects a patient's treatment in both clinical and familial settings. Finally, the collection highlights the gap that separates current biological understandings of aging from its cultural meanings. As Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia continue to command an ever-increasing amount of attention in medicine and psychology, this book will be essential reading for anthropologists, social scientists, and health care professionals.

Book excerpt: A New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice One of LitHub's Most Anticipated Books of 2020 An expansive, radiant, and genre-defying investigation into bonding—and how we are shaped by forces we cannot fully know Is love a force akin to gravity? A kind of invisible fabric which enables communications through space and time? Artist Harry Dodge finds himself contemplating such questions as his father declines from dementia and he rekindles a bewildering but powerful relationship with his birth mother. A meteorite Dodge orders on eBay becomes a mysterious catalyst for a reckoning with the vital forces of matter, the nature of consciousness, and the bafflements of belonging. Structured around a series of formative, formidable coincidences in Dodge’s life, My Meteorite journeys with stylistic bravura from Barthes to Blade Runner, from punk to Pale Fire. It is a wild, incandescent book that creates a literary universe of its own. Blending the personal and the philosophical, the raw and the surreal, the transgressive and the heartbreaking, Harry Dodge revitalizes our world, illuminating the magic just under the surface of daily life.
