Book excerpt: During manufacturing of fiber composite structures, cracks of small sizes are introduced during layup and drilling, and in the making of cutouts. The component itself sometimes has sites that are prone to delaminations, such as the junction of the web and the flange of a beam. Under cyclic loading these interlaminar defects can grow.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study focused on characterizing matrix cracking and delamination behavior in multidirectional laminates. Static tension and tension-tension fatigue tests were conducted on two different layups. Damage onset, accumulation, and residual properties were measured. Matrix cracking was shown to have a considerable influence on residual stiffness of glass epoxy laminates, and could be predicted reasonably well for cracks in 90 deg plies using a simple shear lag analysis. A fracture mechanics analysis for the strain energy release rate associated with 90 deg ply matrix crack formation was developed and was shown to correlate the onset of 90 deg ply cracks in different laminates. The linear degradation of laminate modulus with delamination area, previously observed for graphite epoxy laminates, was predicted for glass epoxy laminates using a simple rule of mixtures analysis. The strain energy release rate associated with edge delamination formation under static and cyclic loading was difficult to analyze because of the presence of several contemporary damage phenomena. Keywords: Fatigue(Mechanics), and Stiffness loss.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results of an experimental investigation of damage development in T300/5208 graphite epoxy laminates subjected to tension-tension cyclic loading are reported. The concept of laminate stiffness reduction as a damage analogue is shown to be a valuable means of test control and damage interpretation. The relationship between stiffness and number of cycles is shown to be unique for each laminate type studied, each possessing three distinct stages, but markedly different among the laminate types. By using two complementary nondestructive evaluation (NDE) techniques, edge replication and penetrant-enhanced stereo X- ray radiography along with a method for deploying fatigue-damaged specimens, the stages of stiffness reduction were found to correspond variously to the predominance of matrix cracking or delamination or interactions of these matrix damage modes. A number of subordinate matrix damage modes including interior delamination, microcracking, and longitudinal splitting are identified with the matrix cracks which produce them.

Book excerpt: Dynamic delamination crack propagation in a (90/0) 5s Graphite/Epoxy laminate with an embedded interfacial crack was investigated experimentally using high speed photography. The dynamic motion was produced by impacting the beamlike laminate specimen with a silicon rubber ball. The threshold impact velocities required to initiate dynamic crack propagation in laminates with varying initial crack positions were determined. The crack propagation speeds were estimated from the photographs. Results show that the through the thickness position of the embedded crack can significantly affect the dominant mechanism and the threshold impact velocity for the onset of crack movement. If the initial delamination is placed near the top of bottom surface of the laminate, local buckling of the delaminated plies may cause instability of the crack. If the initial delamination lies on the midplane, local buckling does not occur and the initiation of crack propagation appears to be dominated by Mode II fracture. The crack propagation and arrest observed was seen to be affected by wave motion within the delamination region. Grady, J. E. and Sun, C. T. Book excerpt: It is commonly accepted that the majority of engineering failures happen due to fatigue or fracture phenomena. Adhesive bonding is a prevailing joining technique, widely used for critical connections in composite structures. However, the lack of knowledge regarding fatigue and fracture behaviour, and the shortage of tools for credible fatigue design, hinders the potential benefits of adhesively bonded joints. The demand for reliable and safe structures necessitates deep knowledge in this area in order to avoid catastrophic structural failures. This book reviews recent research in the field of fatigue and fracture of adhesively-bonded composite joints. The first part of the book discusses the experimental investigation of the reliability of adhesively-bonded composite joints, current research on understanding damage mechanisms, fatigue and fracture, durability and ageing as well as implications for design. The second part of the book covers the modelling of bond performance and failure mechanisms in different loading conditions. A detailed reference work for researchers in aerospace and engineering Expert coverage of different adhesively bonded composite joint structures An overview of joint failure

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tapered [0°] laminates of S2/CE9000 and S2/SP250 glass/epoxies, and two different specimen types of IM6/1827I, a graphite/epoxy with a toughened interleaf, were tested. Specimens were subjected to cyclic tension in a hydraulic load frame. The specimens usually showed some initial stable delaminations in the tapered region, but these did not affect the stiffness of the specimens, and loading was continued until the specimens either delaminated unstably, or reached 106 to 2 x 107 cycles with no unstable delamination. The final unstable delamination originated at the junction of the thin and tapered regions, and extended into both the tapered and thin regions.
