Book excerpt: Blessed are the poor, for they shall inherit the earth. The Haitians inherited the most beautiful earth. They are the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. And never will an American know their level of their poverty. Nor the amount of death that lives in their history. However they can be saved, and I dearly wish they will be. No person should suffer as they suffer because of histories past. This is where this dream takes you. Surpass the pain and look for the hope, without hope there is nothing but nothing, nothing but the truth. Amonnon’s Dream: A warning to world leaders. This is a book intended to change the world. Read it as such. “If one poem moves your heart Then I have done my part To move your soul As mine was moved”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a detailed story on each military coup detat that occurred in Haiti from February 1986 to September 1991. In fact, it describes the political spectrum that reigned in Haiti after the departure of President Jean-Claude Duvalier. The epoch that succeeded the fall of the Duvaliers from power was one of the most ambiguous periods in the history of Haiti founded by Generalissimo Jean-Jacques Dessalines the Great, in 1804. Dessalines, as GENERAL-IN-CHIEF of the Haitian Indigenous army, became the first of the nations Heads-of-state to be overthrown by a military coup detat, in October 17, 1806. Since then, most of the nations Chiefs-of-state assumed power through revolutions, or coups detat. Currently, the nation experiences 33 coups detat. From February 1986 to September 1991, seven coups or attempted coups detat had taken place in Haiti. That is that period of social and political instability that is exposed in this book. (In the post opinions, the author speaks briefly about the problematic of the army involvement in coups detat in Haiti, the January 12, 2010 Earthquake as well as the need for a new Haitian Armed Forces.) The book is made available to help Haitians or foreigners in particular those who are curious about Haitis history, including observers, professors, students, politicians, ordinary people, etc. Everybody should be capable of judging for himself or for herself on the countrys situation during and after the fall of the Duvaliers from power in February 1986. By writing this essay, the author encourages all Haitians that live inside the country or abroad to come to unity. That is a powerful tool that can bring Haiti to a dramatic turn toward consistent DEMOCRACY and economic development.

An accomplished trilingual children's and YA author, she is also an activist, op-ed and cinema writer, and keynote speaker. This companion provides an in-depth look into the world and writings of Danticat through A-Z entries. These entries cover both her works and the prevalent themes of her writing, including colonialism, slavery, superstition, adaptation, dreams and coming of age. Book excerpt: The notion that politics has failed the Haitian people is explored in this in-depth and balanced analysis. It identifies the causes of widespread poverty and political instability as the result of multiple internal factors centered in the elite-mass relationship, with the resourcefulness of the people blocked by greedy governments. Weinstein and Segal admit that the U.S. has made some mistakes in its relationship with Haiti, but they do not blame the U.S. for Haiti's worst political failure, the Duvalierist system. Essential to Haiti's recovery are closer ties to the Caribbean and to the EEC, along with a continuing relationship with the U.S.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Democratic Insecurities focuses on the ethics of military and humanitarian intervention in Haiti during and after Haiti's 1991 coup. In this remarkable ethnography of violence, Erica Caple James explores the traumas of Haitian victims whose experiences were denied by U.S. officials and recognized only selectively by other humanitarian providers. Using vivid first-person accounts from women survivors, James raises important new questions about humanitarian aid, structural violence, and political insecurity. She discusses the politics of postconflict assistance to Haiti and the challenges of promoting democracy, human rights, and justice in societies that experience chronic insecurity. Similarly, she finds that efforts to promote political development and psychosocial rehabilitation may fail because of competition, strife, and corruption among the individuals and institutions that implement such initiatives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Haiti lies in front of the great steps of the American empire like a doormat at the entrance of a majestic castle. Haiti has been there for America when it needed it the most. In 1804, Haiti became the second country in the western hemisphere to proclaim its independence after the U.S. But Haitians’ services and sacrifices to American freedom began as early as 1779 in the U.S. Revolutionary War, to the early 1800s. But the Haitians never got recognition. Instead they watched their country being thrown on the back burner while the U.S. helped other countries advance. How long can America deny the sacrifice of Haitians? In the late 1790s, Haiti’s black general, Toussaint Louverture, saved the U.S. from a dreaded war with the more-powerful Napoleon Army. Not only was the Franco-American War avoided, but the defeat suffered by Bonaparte’s French troops during the Haitian Revolution forever changed global politics and America’s future. Derailed from the pursuit of his worldly dreams, a deflated Bonaparte hurried to sell the Louisiana Territories once he realized his men could not win against the Haitians. Toussaint Louverture’s selfless acts saved American freedom and made the U.S. prosperous. His acts also led to his demise, thereby sending Haiti’s future adrift.

Book excerpt: Does the scientific "theory" that HIV came to North America from Haiti stem from underlying attitudes of racism and ethnocentrism in the United States rather than from hard evidence? Award-winning author and anthropologist-physician Paul Farmer answers with this, the first full-length ethnographic study of AIDS in a poor society. First published in 1992 this new edition has been updated and a new preface added.

The next twelve years passed in a haze of self-congratulation, Republican confusion, and angst, and economic prosperity -- until they ended abruptly with a stunning catastrophe on September 11, 2001. In America Between The Wars, Derek Chollet and James Goldgeier blend deep expertise with broad access to both parties' political and policy establishments to find out how -- and why -- America failed to recognize that when we became the sole superpower with responsibility for the world's oversight, we overlooked how the new world actually worked.

Book excerpt: With the collapse of the Duvalier dictatorship in 1986 came optimistic hopes for a transition toward a sound democracy, accompanied by economic development and social peace--a vision which has failed to materialize in the past 15 years. A native of Haiti, Fatton (government, U. of Virginia) analyzes Haitian politics from 1986 to 2001, revealing the complications and conflicts which have slowed the country's progress toward an effective democracy. The author also explores alternatives which could lead the country toward success. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
