Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to help engineers and scientists better understand contaminated sediment sites and identify and design remedial approaches that are more efficient and effective. Contaminated sediment management is a difficult and costly exercise that is rarely addressed with easily identified and implemented remedies. It is hoped that this book can help identify and implement management approaches that provide an optimal, if not entirely satisfactory, solution to sediment contaminant problems.

Book excerpt: The potential for anaerobic degradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PARs) in contaminated harbor sediments was investigated. PARs were anaerobically oxidize to carbon dioxide in petroleum contaminated sediments from San Diego Bay, Tampa Bay and Boston Harbor. Studies with molybdate, a specific inhibitor of sulfate reduction, as well as investigations in which sulfate levels were varied, demonstrated that PAR oxidation was coupled to sulfate reduction. Pristine harbor sediments did not have a significant potential for anaerobic PAH oxidation, but could be adapted for PAH oxidation by exposure to PAhs or inoculation with PAH-oxidizing microrganisms. Exposure of pristine sediments to PAH resulted in the growth of PAH-oxidizing microorganisms. PARs added to sediments as part of complex fuel mixtures were degraded. The alkanes in the complex fuel mixtures were also anaerobically degraded under sulfate reducing conditions. In estuarine sediments in which concentrations of sulfate were low, PAR and alkane degradation could be stimulated with the addition of sulfate. These studies have demonstrated for the first time that PARs can be oxidized under the anaerobic conditions that predominat in most contaminated harbor sediments and suggest that anaerobic strategies for.

Book excerpt: Hydrocarbons and their derivatives (oxygenated and chlorinated, in particular), both natural and xenobiotic, represent a very large class of compounds whose conversions and degradation by microorganisms cover an extremely rich field, whose concepts are detailed in this book. The fascinating evolution of these concepts over the last twenty years has revealed the extent of the processes implemented in the environment and has multiplied their industrial applications. The resulting achievements and the current developments are described in this book. The English edition of this reference manual is an entirely revised and updated version of the French edition. It is intended for professionals, microbiologists and chemists, as well as scientists, engineers, teachers and post-doctoral researchers, who are interested by the conversions of hydrocarbons and by microbial ecology. The French edition of this book was awarded a special mention for engineering education text book by the Roberval Prize committee in 2007.

Book excerpt: This book focuses on two key issues confronting humanity, viz., energy and environment. There is a need to devise strategies for protecting the environment, at the same time adequately meeting the ever-growing energy needs of the world. Harnessing the power of microbes is one step towards finding cheap, green and sustainable solutions to the problems of energy and environment. The book is divided into eight major topics. These topics include emerging trends in microbial biotechnology, harnessing sustainable energy sources from microorganisms, mechanistics of bioenergy production, bioenergy from wastes and pollutant removal, microalgae for biofuels, bioremediation technologies for petroleum hydrocarbons, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and xenobiotics, bioremediation of nuclear wastes, and the role of extremophilic microorganisms in environmental cleanup.

Book excerpt: Biodegradation mediated by indigenous microbial communities is the ultimate fate of the majority of oil hydrocarbon that enters the marine environment. The aim of this Research Topic is to highlight recent advances in our knowledge of the pathways and controls of microbially-catalyzed hydrocarbon degradation in marine ecosystems, with emphasis on the response of microbial communities to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. In this Research Topic, we encouraged original research and reviews on the ecology of hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria, the rates and mechanisms of biodegradation, and the bioremediation of discharged oil under situ as well as near in situ conditions.
