Book excerpt: Previous research has shown that listeners wearing the Personnel Armor System for Ground Troops (PASGT) helmet performed worse than those wearing the Advanced Combat Helmet on sound localization tasks. The PASGT has greater coverage over the ears. However, these helmets also differ in their suspension systems and profiles. Three versions of a single helmet design, differing only in the ear coverage, were compared in this study. As ear coverage increased, localization performance decreased. Most of the change was due to increases in large errors (>25-deg). In addition, these effects were tested in both "ideal" laboratory acoustics and in a moderately reverberant environment. Moderate reverberation intensified the effects of ear coverage -- improving localization performance without a helmet and impairing it the most in the greatest ear coverage condition.

In general, rearrangement leads to orderly adaptation of perceptual-motor performance, while disarrangement leads to degradation of performance. This experiment was an auditory rearrangement. Subjects' judgments of auditory direction were displaced laterally by means of a high-fidelity pseudophone that effectively rotated the interaural axis through a 20 degree horizontal angle. After exposure sessions that consisted of walking repeatedly toward a fixed sound source for 20 minutes, two of the four experimental subjects demonstrated significant shifts averaging 6 degrees in their judgments of auditory direction. The shifts partially compensated for the error of localization produced by the pseudophone. The shifts in localization are discussed in terms of the nature of the exposure situation and the factors that are likely to be responsible for compensation.

Localization error was determined for three groups of noise bands one octave wide with center frequencies of 250, 2000 and 8000 Hz. There were no practical differences between the two helmets, nor between the bareheaded and helmeted conditions with either helmet.

Participants were required to locate and identify a visual target in a field of 5, 20, or 50 visual distractors randomly distributed on the interior surface of a sphere. Four HPD conditions were examined: earplugs, earmuffs, both earplugs and earmuffs simultaneously, and no hearing protection. There was also a control condition in which no auditory cue was provided. A repeated measures analysis of variance revealed significant main effects of HPD for both search time and head motion data, indicating that the degree to which localization is disrupted by HPDs varies with the type of device worn. When both earplugs and earmuffs are worn simultaneously, search times and head motion are more similar to those found when no auditory cue is provided than when either earplugs or earmuffs alone are worn, suggesting that sound localization cues are so severely disrupted by double hearing protection that the listener can recover little or no information regarding the direction of sound source origin. Potential applications of this research include high-noise military, aerospace, and industrial settings in which HPDs are necessary but wearing double protection may compromise safety and/or performance.

Armstrong Aerospace Medical Research Laboratory developed a unique research auditory localization facility for special, in-depth investigations of human auditory localization phenomena. A study was conducted in the facility to measure localization performance with three types of acoustic signal in azimuth; (1) natural, free-field acoustic cues heard with the ears uncovered, (2) simulated cues recorded at the ears of an acoustic manikin and presented over headphones, and (3) acoustic cues generated by an electronic auditory localization cue synthesizer and presented over headphones. Purposes of the study were (1) to evaluate relative localization accuracy and response time with the free-field, simulated and synthesized cues, (2) to examine the feasibility of localization of synthesized cues over headphones, and (3) to establish data base of human auditory localization performance with these signals. Results across the three conditions averaged about 5 to 6 degrees in accuracy (magnitude error) and 3.5 to 4.5 seconds in response time. Localization performance with simulated and synthesized cues was essentially equivalent to natural (free-field) cues, demonstrating the capability of the localization cue synthesizer to present realistic directional sounds in azimuth.

These researchers have shown that the use of higher frequency energy in the signal is reduced by high-frequency hearing loss. Elevation acuity is more affected by high-frequency hearing loss than azimuth acuity, which is dominated by interaural time difference cues. Many factors, including the temporal and spectral characteristics of the sound source, the listening environment, the types of interfering sound sources, and the listener s auditory system, affect localization acuity. Two of those factors, the effects of noise-induced hearing loss and head motion cues, are reported in the current study.

Book excerpt: Sound field synthesis systems vary in number and arrangement of loudspeakers and methods used to generate virtual sound environments to study human hearing perception. While previous work has evaluated the accuracy with which these systems physically reproduce room acoustic conditions, less is known on assessing subjective perception of those conditions, such as how well such systems preserve source localization. This work quantifies the accuracy and precision of perceived localization from a multi-channel sound field synthesis system at Boys Town National Research Hospital, which used 24 physical loudspeakers and vector-based amplitude panning to generate sound fields. Short bursts of broadband speech-shaped noise were presented from source locations (either coinciding with a physical loudspeaker location, or panned between loudspeakers) under free-field and modeled reverberant-room conditions. Listeners used a HTC Vive remote laser tracking system to point to the perceived source location.Results show that the system synthesizes source locations accurately for both physical and panned sources, in both azimuth and elevation. Panned sources, though, are localized less precisely than physical sources. Reverberant condition is also found to affect both the accuracy and precision of localization in the azimuthal plane, with dry conditions producing greater accuracy and better precision. Only accuracy (not precision) of localization in elevation was impacted by reverberant condition, with reverberant cases producing results closer to the target than dry cases. An interaction effect of reverberant condition with elevation on localization in elevation, though, indicates that dry conditions result in better localization in elevation than reverberant ones at an elevation close to head height, but the situations at higher elevations are where subjects localized dry sources lower than the target height, while reverberant ones were more accurately placed. Other laboratories with sound field synthesis systems are encouraged to gather similar data on the accuracy and precision of localization in azimuth and elevation, so that results from studies using these systems can be better interpreted in light of the capabilities of the system to generate accurate and precise reproductions of source locations. This study is a partial replication of an earlier study in which stimuli were presented using multiple transducers. The purposes of this study are to demonstrate the abilities of a second generation assessment system using a single transducer in a larger controlled environment and to provide initial data to use for comparison in future experiments. This second generation system eliminates extraneous cues to localization provided by differing frequency spectrum signatures of multiple transducers, and provides greatly increased angular resolution for stimulus presentation. The same hearing protective devices tested in the multiple transducer study are considered here. The DH-178 helmet is a prototype ballistic helmet combined with circumaural hearing protection and a 'talk-through' amplification of high level acoustic input. The DH-178 was two independent amplification circuits, one for each ear. It therefore provides a dichotic signal to the wearer. The DH-140 is also a ballistic helmet similar to the DH-178. The most important difference is that the DH-14- uses single amplification circuit distributed to the two ears. It provides a diotic signal to the wearer. Head movement is beneficial in reducing these errors in acoustically hearing listeners. This study investigated the effect of head movement on localization throughout 360o of azimuth for both real and simulated CI users. Listeners in a bilateral electro-acoustic (CI with ipsilateral hearing aid) simulation derived the greatest head movement benefit in reducing front/back reversals. Left/right confusions were reduced in simulations with matched bilateral stimulation. Sensitivity to both timing and level cues for sound localization was correlated with sound localization performance without head movement for simulated device users. Sensitivity to timing cues was correlated with sound localization performance with head movement cues for simulated device users. Simulations of bilateral CI and bimodal users (CI with contralateral hearing aid) listening predicted real users' sound localization performance, binaural sensitivity and head movement patterns.
