Book excerpt: In an effort to better understand the nature of irradiation embrittlement of low alloy steels, in-situ HVEM deformation tests have been performed on pure iron and iron-0.3% copper ribbon tensile specimens in both the unirradiated and irradiated (2.5 x 1019 n/cm2, E> 1 MeV at 290°C) conditions. Microstructural response is described principally in terms of the matrix in which cracks were observed to propagate across the different specimens. Major differences between the irradiation iron-copper alloy and the other material conditions were (1) the plastic zone which developed ahead to propagating cracks was smaller, and (2) dislocations were found to develop a crenulated structure uncharacteristic of the other conditions studied. It is inferred that the crenulations result from the presence of obstacles to dislocation motion and thereby demonstrate the matrix strengthening effect of small, radiation-induced, presumably copper-rich precipitates. However, the obstacles which are most effective in retarding dislocation motion are found to be distributed on a much coarser scale than that of the radiation-induced loops.

Book excerpt: Dispersion strengthened (CuAl25) and precipitation hardened (CuCrZr) copper alloys are being considered as candidate materials for the first wall and divertor components of ITER. In the present work, the tensile and fracture resistance properties of CuAl25 and CuCrZr alloys and their joints with 316LN stainless steel have been studied in the unirradiated and neutron irradiated conditions. The joints were produced by hot isostatic pressing (HIP) at 960°C for 3 hours at a pressure of 120 MPa. Test specimens of the base materials CuAl25 and CuCrZr alloys and of the joints (CuCrZr / 316LN and CuAl25 / 316LN) were irradiated with fission neutrons in the DR-3 reactor at Risø in the temperature range from 50°C to 350°C to a displacement dose level of about 0.3 dpa (NRT). Tensile specimens of these alloys were tested at temperatures in the range of 50°C to 350°C. Fracture resistance curves were determined using three point bend tests on specimens of the base materials and of the joints. Tensile and fracture toughness results, together with the metallography of the joints will be presented. Implications of these results and the deformation mechanisms will be briefly discussed.

Book excerpt: Fast-neutron irradiation of alloys for fusion-reactor applications produces bulk changes in density and composition via porosity swelling and transmutation which affect the dc volume electrical and thermal conductivities (sigma=1[rho]sub e/ and K). For the Cu materials of our study, neutron fluences of 2 x 1026n/m2 (E> 0.1 MeV) produced Ni and Zn weight increases of about 0.05 and 0.09%, respectively, and porosity swelling of 0 to 7%; rho/sub e/ accordingly increased as much as 18%. We also determined the individual rho/sub e/ changes due to both swelling and transmutation via use of an appropriate mixing rule and of Matthiessen's law to unmask any residual effects present, e.g., phase or microstructural changes. For four materials - two pure copper and two alumina-dispersion-strengthened (ADS) alloys - subtraction of these deltarho/sub e/'s from the irradiated values yielded or nearly yielded the respective control values. In contrast, the two precipitation-strengthened (PS) alloys studied, MZC and AMZIRC, had relatively large negative residues, apparently indicating effective radiation-induced conductivities.

It was found that the principal effect of plastic deformation on unirradiated copper was to translate the yield surface without appreciably changing its size or shape. Irradiation, on the other hand, produced a very large change in the overall size of the initial yield surface; in other words, it produced an effect phenomenologically similar to extensive isotropic strain-hardening. In addition, the shape of the initial yield surface after irradiation was dependent on the plastic strain offset chosen to define yield. This effect was not observed for the unirradiated metal. Extensive plastic deformation after irradiation caused the yield surface to translate and grow smaller without significantly changing shape. (Author).
