Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2016 edition of the Input Indicators of the British Columbia High Technology Sector report is prepared by BC Stats, and is the thirteenth in a series of reports first produced in 2000. [...] All indicators have been updated to the latest year for which data were available as of January 2017.2 Indicators of the success, or "outputs" of the high technology sector, are covered by a companion report, the Profile of the British Columbia Technology Sector. [...] The education-based components of the B. C. government's new technology strategy, such as the addition of coding to school curricula and providing high-speed internet access to 100% of the province, could potentially have an impact on the province's educational and tech-adoption indicators in the future. [...] The purpose of the report was to monitor the high technology sector from the input side, by measuring and analyzing the production and application of knowledge, and the climate, institutions and funding arrangements that make this knowledge available for the development of the provincial high technology sector. [...] Focusing on the degrees awarded on a per capita basis provides some indication of the overall education level of the province and the ability of the high tech sector to use these educated individuals.6 The likely presence of skilled and educated professionals in a high technology economy is indicated by the number of graduates per capita who hold undergraduate and graduate degrees.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mobility of people, objects, information, ideas, services, and capital has reached levels unprecedented in human history. Such forms of mobility are manifested in continued advances in communication and transportation capacities, in the growing use of digital and biometric technologies, in the movements of Indigenous, migrant, and women's groups, and in the expansion of global capitalism into remote parts of the world. Mobilities, Knowledge, and Social Justice demonstrates how knowledge is mobilized and how people shape, and are shaped by, matters of mobility. Richly detailed and illuminating essays reveal the ways in which issues of mobility are at the centre of debates, ranging from practices of belonging to war and border security measures, from gender, race, and class matters to governance and international trade, and from citizenship and immigration policies to human rights. Contributors analyze how particular forms of mobility generate specific types of knowledge and give rise to claims for social justice. This collection reconsiders mobility as a key term in the social sciences and humanities by delineating new ways of understanding how mobility informs and shapes lives as well as social, cultural, and political relations within, across, and beyond states. Contributors include Rob Aitken (Alberta), Tanya Basok (Windsor), Janine Brodie (Alberta), William Coleman (Waterloo), Ronjon Paul Datta (Alberta), Karl Froschauer (Simon Fraser), Daniel Gorman (Waterloo), Amanda Grzyb (Western), Suzan Ilcan (Waterloo), Eleonore Kofman (Middlesex), Anita Lacey (Auckland), Theresa McCarthy (Buffalo), Daniel J. Paré (Ottawa), Nicola Piper (Sydney), Parvati Raghuram (Open), Kim Rygiel (Wilfrid Laurier), Leslie Regan Shade (Toronto), Sandra Smeltzer (Western ), Daiva Stasiulis (Carleton), Myra Tawfik (Windsor), and Lloyd Wong (Calgary).

Book excerpt: The high technology sector has become an integral part of the British Columbia economy with some of the top tech companies in the world located in the province. [...] With this in mind, the Profile of the Technology Sector is part of an ongoing effort to monitor the growth and performance of the high technology sector in British Columbia by evaluating the economic contribution of firms that produce high technology goods and services. [...] Input Indicators of the British Columbia High Technology Sector This Profile report provides an overview of the outputs of the high technology sector in British Columbia; however, it is also useful to look at the inputs to the high technology sector. [...] The tech sector in Oregon is predominantly centred on manufacturing of high tech goods and the state is the location of the factories of high tech titans such as Intel and Hewlett-Packard. [...] At the other end of the scale, almost all the high tech workers in the District of Columbia worked in the service sector and Alaska and Hawaii were not far behind with only 2% of high tech employment in manufacturing industries.
