Book excerpt: Nemeth “knows how to build suspense” is this legal thriller about a bitter divorce that takes a frightening twist (Publishers Weekly). Florida entrepreneur Randle Marks has just been served with divorce papers by his wife Carrie. It’s not a shock. Conniving, loveless, and adulterous, she’s more of a threat. Randall’s new startup is about to go global, and the millions he’ll rack up will be fair game. He needs a master manipulator on his side—someone like attorney Tony Zambrana who’s already devising a cunning strategy to outwit the voracious soon-to-be divorcée. But Carrie has more on her side than Randle can imagine: outdated laws, shady judges, a dogged detective, and a cutthroat publicity-hungry prosecutor. Not to mention Carrie’s capricious twin sister, and the greedy officers of the court who are more than willing to pit one bull against the other. To win at this increasingly brutal contest, Randle agrees to become the bait in an elaborate and dangerous trap. But for both Carrie and Randle, the cost of losing could be their very lives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Little Big Men is a study of competitive bodybuilders on the West Coast that examines the subculture from the perspective of bodybuilders' everyday activities. It offers fascinating descriptions and insightful analogies of an important and understudied subculture that has risen to widespread popularity in today's mass culture. Alan Klein conducted his field study of bodybuilding in some of the world's best-known gyms. In studying the social and political relations of bodybuilding competitors, Klein explores not only gym dynamics but also the internal and external pressures bodybuilders face. Central to his examination is the critique of masculinity. Through his study of "hustling" among bodybuilders, Klein is able to construct a social-psychological male configuration that includes narcissism, homophobia, hypermasculinity, and fascism. Because they exist as exaggerations, these bodybuilder traits come to represent one end of the continuum of modern masculinity, what Klein terms comic-book masculinity. This study is a rare foray into the critique of contemporary American macho.

A university course on hypertrophy! Loaded with useful information and it does a great job with outlining the approach to hypertrophy. The content of the book is amazing and so thorough." Michael S. "Great deal of gains assured. The book is full of useful information that all lifters can definitely take benefit from even if they don't specialize in hypertrophy or differ at certain topics. In my personal case, whilst I don't share completely my opinion regarding volume manipulation within mesocycles, I couldn't agree more on many other topics discussed in the book (love the SFTR) and I recommend it to anyone looking to go a step further in their knowledge regarding resistance training or just training in general. Also there's amazing content on YT that complement the book perfectly. Really good investment." Javier M" This book has been an incredibly useful tool to help me think about how to set up my training based upon underlying principles. This has made it much easier to adjust my program based upon my needs/desires/progress instead of trying to mimic the appearance of other people's programs." Josh J"This is the new bodybuilding bible. Read it, accept the 9-principles of hypertrophy into your training and let them wash away your past gym mistakes. You will come out the other side a born again hypertrophy principle master." Maria C"Book is excellent. It builds on much of the tremendous free information Dr. Mike puts out on volume landmarks and provides the methodology to build the plan including how to use your workout data to best determine your own individual plan. I would recommend this as an add to the library for everyone serious about adding muscle to your frame. Great work Dr. Mike & Team!" John F

Book excerpt: In this striking novel about an unforgettable childhood, four Nigerian brothers encounter a madman whose mystic prophecy of violence threatens the core of their close-knit family Told by nine-year-old Benjamin, the youngest of four brothers, The Fishermen is the Cain and Abel-esque story of a childhood in Nigeria, in the small town of Akure. When their father has to travel to a distant city for work, the brothers take advantage of his absence to skip school and go fishing. At the forbidden nearby river, they meet a madman who persuades the oldest of the boys that he is destined to be killed by one of his siblings. What happens next is an almost mythic event whose impact-both tragic and redemptive-will transcend the lives and imaginations of the book's characters and readers. Dazzling and viscerally powerful, The Fisherman is an essential novel about Africa, seen through the prism of one family's destiny.

It is free to read at Oxford Scholarship Online and offered as a free PDF download from OUP and selected open access locations. Imagination will remain a mystery--we will not be able to explain imagination--until we can break it into parts we already understand. Explaining Imagination is a guidebook for doing just that, where the parts are other ordinary mental states like beliefs, desires, judgments, and decisions. In different combinations and contexts, these states constitute cases of imagining. This reductive approach to imagination is at direct odds with the current orthodoxy, according to which imagination is a sui generis mental state or process--one with its own inscrutable principles of operation. Explaining Imagination upends that view, showing how, on closer inspection, the imaginings at work in hypothetical reasoning, pretense, the enjoyment of fiction, and creativity are reducible to other familiar mental states--judgments, beliefs, desires, and decisions among them. Crisscrossing contemporary philosophy of mind, cognitive science, and aesthetics, Explaining Imagination argues that a clearer understanding of imagination is already well within reach.

This book was released on 2011 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deglutition or a swallow begins as a voluntary act in the oral cavity but proceeds autonomously in the pharynx and esophagus. Bilateral sequenced activation and inhibition of more than 25 pairs of muscles of mouth, pharynx, larynx, and esophagus is required during a swallow. A single swallow elicits peristalsis in the pharynx and esophagus along with relaxation of upper and lower esophageal sphincters. Multiple swallows, at closely spaced time intervals, demonstrate deglutitive inhibition; sphincters remain relaxed during the entire period, but only the last swallow elicits peristalsis. Laryngeal inlet closure or airway protection is very important during swallow. Upper part of the esophagus that includes upper esophageal sphincter is composed of skeletal muscles, middle esophagus is composed of a mixture of skeletal and smooth muscles, and lower esophagus, including lower esophageal sphincter, is composed of smooth muscles. Peristalsis progresses in seamless fashion, despite separate control mechanism, from the skeletal to smooth muscle esophagus. The esophagus's circular and longitudinal muscle layers contract synchronously during peristalsis. Sphincters maintain continuous tone; neuromuscular mechanisms for tonic closure in the upper and lower esophageal sphincters are different. Lower esophageal sphincter transient relaxation, belching mechanism, regurgitation, vomiting, and reflux are mediated via the brain stem. Louder and Faster is a cultural study of the phenomenon of Asian American taiko, the thundering, athletic drumming tradition that originated in Japan. Immersed in the taiko scene for twenty years, Deborah Wong has witnessed cultural and demographic changes and the exponential growth and expansion of taiko particularly in Southern California. Through her participatory ethnographic work, she reveals a complicated story embedded in memories of Japanese American internment and legacies of imperialism, Asian American identity and politics, a desire to be seen and heard, and the intersection of culture and global capitalism. Exploring the materialities of the drums, costumes, and bodies that make sound, analyzing the relationship of these to capitalist multiculturalism, and investigating the gender politics of taiko, Louder and Faster considers both the promises and pitfalls of music and performance as an antiracist practice. The result is a vivid glimpse of an Asian American presence that is both loud and fragile.
