Book Synopsis Genesis 1 and the Creationism Debate by : Steven DiMattei
Download or read book Genesis 1 and the Creationism Debate written by Steven DiMattei and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern readers often assume that Genesis 1 depicts the creation of the earth and sky as we know it. Yet in an appeal for textual honesty, Steven DiMattei shows that such beliefs are more representative of modern views about this ancient text than the actual claims and beliefs of its author. Through a culturally contextualized and objective reading of the texts of Genesis 1 and 2, this study not only introduces readers to the textual data that convincingly demonstrate that Genesis' two creation accounts were penned by different authors who held contradictory views and beliefs about the origin of the world and of man and woman, but also establishes on textual grounds that what the author of Genesis 1 portrayed God creating was the world as its author and culture perceived and experienced it--not the objective world, but a subjective world, subject to the culturally conditioned views and beliefs of its author. In the end, this book clearly illustrates that the Bible's ancient texts do in fact represent the beliefs and worldviews of ancient peoples and cultures--not those of God, not those of later readers, and especially not those of modern-day Creationists.

Book Synopsis A Biblical Defense Guide for Gays, Lesbians and Those Who Love Them by : Craig Bettendorf
Download or read book A Biblical Defense Guide for Gays, Lesbians and Those Who Love Them written by Craig Bettendorf and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2008-08-12 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oftentimes cultural prohibitions thrive unchecked by the general populace eventually entering the world of "known understanding". "It is this way because it has always been this way", becomes the reflexive response to change for the dominant culture. This was certainly the case while institutional approval of human slavery existed. It was also the case when Women sought to exert their independence grasping for equality in a male-dominated world. Throughout the past three decades, members of the Gay and Lesbian community have sought freedom from hate as well as religious and societal tolerance gaining some small degree of success. A Biblical Defense Guide was researched and ultimately authored to be used as a tool for mutual understanding. Those who seek a clear understanding of the societal prohibition and oppression of cultural minorities will be well served in seeking answers outside of the known cultural understanding of "It is this way because it has always been this way". A Biblical Defense Guide will offer interesting insights to all those who seek to understand the historical, cultural, and societal prohibitions that are at work in the world today.

Book Synopsis Open to God, Open to the World by : Franz Konig
Download or read book Open to God, Open to the World written by Franz Konig and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last months of his long life, Cardinal Konig expressed the wish to record what was most important as a way forward for the Church and for Christians generally. At a time when the Austrian Church was rocked by scandal (paedophile priests, pornography in seminaries, the corpse of a dead priest floating down the Danube) this wise and holy man has been and will continue to be seen as a man of quite exceptional importance. The book, all written in the first person, is concerned with openness - that openness advocated by John XXIII when he talked of opening the windows of the Church to the modern world. In this Cardinal Konig was a pioneer and his influence on Vatican II was crucial. In this very personal book, Konig often talks of people he met and corresponded with, and his experiences on extensive travels behind what was then termed The Iron Curtain. There is also a beautiful chapter on personal prayer - the all important personal dialogue with God. He recounts how he learned a great deal from a Parsee family in Bombay and talks of his conversations with God in the last years of his life. At a time when religion is so often a cause of dissent, conflict and even murder, Konig's views on dialogue with other Christians and other religions have a particular pertinence and will be seen to be prophetic.

Book Synopsis Get Unstuck from Fundamentalism - A Spiritual Journey by : Robert P. Crosby
Download or read book Get Unstuck from Fundamentalism - A Spiritual Journey written by Robert P. Crosby and published by Vivo! Publishing Co., Inc.. This book was released on 2006-03 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Get Unstuck from Fundamentalism unravels the mystery behind the need to hold myths as literal truth and the need for certainty. Written in and laced with engaging Italian stories, it points beyond mere rejection of childhood upbringing to a deep spiritual shore that is there for all of us to find. Children live in a literal world where myths and reality are blurred such as the existence of Santa Claus or the Tooth Fairy. Many of those beliefs are unraveled by the time you become an adult, but fundamentalism is that which remains locked into absolutism. It is as if all the answers and purpose of the world come from outside of yourself, and the stories if still held literally remain in charge of your thinking. Most aren't even aware of this. 30% of Americans hold fundamentalist beliefs, but only 9% call themselves a fundamentalist. Those who are unaware cannot realize that they live on the ends of strings that someone else pulls. Others live in reaction against their childhood literal beliefs and therefore shut themselves off from further spiritual growth.
