Book excerpt: An exciting first-hand account of an early deer hunter's explorations of the unspoiled American wilderness Voyages from New York, through Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and Missouri, and as far south as Louisiana. Gerstacker arrived in America from Germany in 1837, drawn by stories he had heard of the immense forests, excellent for deer hunting. He wandered from Buffalo to New Orleans, visiting frontiersmen in their backwoods cabins and living off the land, eating venison, acorns, sassafras leaves, and wild honey. He found Arkansas ideal for hunting, and encountered all sorts of wildlife, including alligators, wolves, bears, and deer, in his travels. His hunting journal gives a fascinating look at the early-nineteenth century American landscape.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Introduction: "There is not a successful deer hunter in the world who has not come up with his own peculiar methods -- some of them secret, some not -- for beating the long odds of killing a deer. The Ojibwa Indians of the Great Lakes figured out they could attract deer by smoking wild aster in a pipe, the smell of which was like the scent of a deer's hooves. Other tribes -- such as the Choctaws and Cherokees in the Southeast -- would carry skinned-out deer heads on their belts, which they could wear over their heads whenever they needed to make a stalk (this is no longer an advisable, or legal, technique). They used decoys and calls, and they knew that banging a pair of antlers together could summon a buck during the rut. In this book we have tried to compile some of the best information and most interesting pieces written about deer in Sports Afield since the magazine was founded in 1887. There were not as many deer to hunt back then, but over the last quarter century deer populations have boomed in nearly every state but Alaska and Hawaii, and so have the articles written about them. Many of these pieces originally appeared in the Sports Afield Almanac, which was introduced by Editor Ted Kesting in 1972; others appeared as departments or short features. All told, more than 250 deer hunters contributed, making this, we hope, a very unique look at what is now America's favorite game animal. Some of the contributors-like Dwight Schuh and Peter Fiduccia, Tom McIntyre and Ted Kerasote-are what we would call pros. They have hunted, studied and written about deer all their lives. Others are just guys who wanted to share a couple of their best deer-hunting secrets. Do not be surprised if you turn up some contradictory views. There's more than one way to shoot, skin, and cook a deer; but it may be that the best way of all is the one you have to figure out on your own." "This is the finest book on whitetail hunting that I have seen." -- Larry Myhre, Sioux City Journal

Book excerpt: Every fall close to one million hunters enter Pennsylvania's forests and mountains in quest of the white-tailed deer. Some are seeking sport and companionship; others are stocking their larders for winter; many are conservationists who regard hunting as the most humane way of reducing overpopulated deer herds. They all face the increasing activism of animal rights advocates who are opposed to hunting in principle and who frequently picket and harass hunters. This controversial subject is explored in depth by Mike Sajna, the outdoors columnist for Pittsburgh Magazine and a twenty-year veteran of Pennsylvania's "pumpkin army," the orange-clad throng that invades the woods every season. To explain the ethos and traditions of hunting he takes the reader to a typical deer camp in Warren County, in the rugged terrain of the Allegheny High Plateau. Starting with the trek north from their homes around Pittsburgh, he captures the sights and sounds, thoughts and feelings of three generations of hunters. With humor, affection, and insight he recounts the hunting lore, the camaraderie, the physical testing that make deer camp a unique experience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deer hunting opportunities and wildlife management science are peaking simultaneously in many areas of North America. Yet, some game managers have fallen behind, neglecting their white-tailed deer resource. Tired of the same State Game Lands nearest to your subdivision? Have you thought about hunting another state or province? Have you located other Wildlife Management Areas to try? Or are you laying plans to purchase some of your own property? Are you maximizing the private access opportunities you already have? What do others do when they are as dissatisfied as you are with the state fish and game department's performance -like in your area? Are your game lands denuded of deer from over-hunting, with no timbering plans, no plan of action to return the forest to health? No game plan to make things better for the youth hunters learning the skill? Nothing? Have other hunters choked you out of your favorite spots? Are conservation officers turning a blind eye to the slob redneck poachers ruining everything that is left of your family's favorite tradition, deer hunting? What are some options that will really work for me? Am I willing to do a little homework or read up on things? Do you mean my subscriptions to Field and Stream and Outdoor Life are not enough? Don't you think it's time for something to change, anything? A new camp? Maybe, if you are sure since this past season that no deer were present in some of your favorite hotspots... One way you knew? You went dawn to dusk on a given hunting day -without a cartridge fired, anywhere, within earshot. Was the only REAL hunt the first two hours of Opening Day?
