In this paper we describe an approach for decreasing the delay spread and power spread in ICs based on adaptively servoing the circuits between static CMOS operation and QuadRail operation. An on-chip series-regulator employing a dummy delay path is used to generate the adaptive low swing power supply rails making this approach fully compatible with a standard CMOS IC design methodology. Simulation results are presented demonstrating that for a 16*16+36-bit multiplier-accumulator designed in 0.5[mu]m CMOS process the proposed approach decreases the delay spread from 3.9X to 2.3X and the power spread from 3.6X to 1.8X."

Mixed-Swing voltage techniques (QuadRail), which employ multiple operating voltages to implement standard datapath circuits by intermixing high- and low-voltage signals, have been proposed earlier for low power design as an alternative to fully-static CMOS logic. Significant amount of power savings have been reported using these techniques. One of the major problems faced by the designer when operating CMOS static logic circuits at low power supply voltages is that the delay spread introduced by today's IC manufacturing variations can increase dramatically. In this thesis we describe an approach for decreasing the delay spread in ICs based on adaptively servoing the circuits between static CMOS operation and QuadRail operation. 'Slow' instances of an IC are operated in standard static CMOS mode in order to minimize their delay while 'Fast' instances of an IC are operated in QuadRail mode in order to decrease their power dissipation. A completely on-chip series-regulator is used to generate the adaptive low swing power supply rails making this methodology fully compatible with standard CMOS IC technology. With such a completely self-contained mixed-swing methodology one is guaranteed to have a design which decreases power consumption while always maintaining target delay. The ability to freely mix low-voltage swing output gates with fully static CMOS gates without requiring any explicit level converters sounds promising for synthesizing large digital blocks (random/regular) using mixed-swing output gates. This issue has been investigated in this thesis by synthesizing some benchmark circuits using fully timing-characterized mixed-swing cell libraries and comparing the power-delay trends so obtained with standard fully static CMOS logic."

This approach is relatively insensitive to imperfections in the manufacturing process and offers numerous advantages for the realization of high-resolution analog-to-digital (A/D) converters in the low-voltage environment that is increasingly demanded by advanced VLSI technologies and by portable electronic systems. In The Design of Low-Voltage, Low-Power Sigma-Delta Modulators, an analysis of power dissipation in sigma-delta modulators is presented, and a low-voltage implementation of a digital-audio performance A/D converter based on the results of this analysis is described. Although significant power savings can typically be achieved in digital circuits by reducing the power supply voltage, the power dissipation in analog circuits actually tends to increase with decreasing supply voltages. Oversampling architectures are a potentially power-efficient means of implementing high-resolution A/D converters because they reduce the number and complexity of the analog circuits in comparison with Nyquist-rate converters. In fact, it is shown that the power dissipation of a sigma-delta modulator can approach that of a single integrator with the resolution and bandwidth required for a given application. In this research the influence of various parameters on the power dissipation of the modulator has been evaluated and strategies for the design of a power-efficient implementation have been identified. The Design of Low-Voltage, Low-Power Sigma-Delta Modulators begins with an overview of A/D conversion, emphasizing sigma-delta modulators. It includes a detailed analysis of noise in sigma-delta modulators, analyzes power dissipation in integrator circuits, and addresses practical issues in the circuit design and testing of a high-resolution modulator.
