Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During America's Gilded Age (dates), the country was swept by a mania for all things Japanese. It spread from coast to coast, enticed everyone from robber barons to street vendors with its allure, and touched every aspect of life from patent medicines to wallpaper. Americans of the time found in Japanese art every design language: modernism or tradition, abstraction or realism, technical virtuosity or unfettered naturalism, craft or art, romance or functionalism. The art of Japan had a huge influence on American art and design. Title compares juxtapositions of American glass, silver and metal arts, ceramics, textiles, furniture, jewelry, advertising, and packaging with a spectrum of Japanese material ranging from expensive one-of-a-kind art crafts to mass-produced ephemera. Beginning in the Aesthetic movement, this book continues through the Arts & Crafts era and ends in Frank Lloyd Wright's vision, showing the reader how that model became transformed from Japanese to American in design and concept. Hannah Sigur is an art historian, writer, and editor with eight years' residence and study in East and Southeast Asia. She has a master's degree from the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University, and is completing a PhD in the arts of Japan. Her writings include co-authoring A Master Guide to the Art of Floral Design (Timber Press, 2002), which is listed in "The Best Books of 2002" by The Christian Science Monitor and is now in its second edition; and "The Golden Ideal: Chinese Landscape Themes in Japanese Art," in Lotus Leaves, A Master Guide to the Art of Floral Design (2001). She lives in Berkeley.

Book excerpt: Re-envisioning Japan is the first truly comprehensive book on Japanese export textiles of the Meiji period (1868-1912), featuring stunning examples from all over the country. Lavishly illustrated, the book features fabrics that explore the craftsmanship and remarkable talent of Meiji artists and artisans who produced goods for export markets. The makers of Meiji textiles sought to modernize traditional modes of visual representation, aspiring to create "paintings in silk thread," at times even replicating specific Western paintings. More often, they collaborated with contemporary Japanese painters to create dazzling new images that more than ever before realized the aesthetic potential of silk thread as an artistic medium. This book showcases these spectacular ornamental textiles in dazzling color reproductions and many close-up details.

Book excerpt: Every three years, three hundred square miles of land in northwestern Japan are transformed into the most ambitious and largest-scale art installation in the world: the Echigo-Tsumari Art Field. One hundred sixty of the world's best-known landscape artists, sculptors, and architects create artworks in two hundred villages that dot the mountains and terraced rice fields of the Japanese countryside, with the intent of rediscovering relationships between nature, art, and humanity, forging collaborations between global artists and local communities, and connecting people to each other and the land. Half a million people make the annual pilgrimage to witness this unique art project. Art Place Japan offers an exhaustive full-color catalog of the eight hundred artworks created during the past fifteen years. For those lucky enough to visit, this book, the first in English on the subject, also offers detailed information on how to visit the often-remote sites, with travel information and a newly commissioned map that locates the projects throughout the Niigata Prefecture.

Book excerpt: Conveying the impressive range and beauty of art associated with the tradition of kami veneration in Japan, 'Shinto: Discovery of the Divine in Japanese Art' presents works in various media--calligraphy, painting, sculpture, costume, and decorative arts--assembled from religious institutions and museums in Japan, and from collections in the United States. Kami veneration, a practice often referred to as Shinto in modern sources, is unique to Japan, although a number of its components stem from court and religious rituals in neighboring countries. 'Shinto' accompanies an exhibition at the Cleveland Museum of Art, presented with the special cooperation of the Nara National Museum in Japan, and is written by top scholars from the United States and Japan. It is the first catalogue in any language to bring together significant works from both U.S. and Japanese collections related to kami veneration, documenting these rare and fragile works.

Book excerpt: Bustle: Best Book of the Month From the critically acclaimed author of The Heart: Frida Kahlo in Paris, a fascinating, intimate portrait of one of Japan’s most influential and respected textile artists. Writer, filmmaker, and photographer Marc Petitjean finds himself in Kyoto one fine morning with his camera, to film a man who will become his friend: Kunihiko Moriguchi, a master kimono painter and Living National Treasure—like his father before him. As a young decorative arts student in the 1960s, Moriguchi rubbed shoulders with the cultural elite of Paris and befriended Balthus, who would profoundly influence his artistic career. Discouraged by Balthus from pursuing design in Europe, he returned to Japan to take up his father’s vocation. Once back in this world of tradition he had tried to escape, Moriguchi contemporized the craft of Yūzen (resist dyeing) through his innovative use of abstraction in patterns. With a documentarian’s keen eye, Petitjean retraces Moriguchi’s remarkable life, from his childhood during the turbulent 1940s and 50s marked by war, to his prime as an artist with works exhibited in the most prestigious museums in the world.

Because of its innovative composition and design pattern, the Rinpa school, one of the historical schools in Japanese painting established in 17th-century Kyoto by Hon'ami Kōetsu and Tawaraya Sōtatsu and passed on to Ogata Kōrin, Ogata Kenzan and Sakai Hōitsu, still maintains a huge influence on the modern art and design scene. This book explores the history of Rinpa from its birth, evolution and rebirth in modern times through carefully selected artworks of important figures in Rinpa history, including many national treasures and important cultural properties. Immerse yourself in the world of Rinpa. This is the DNA of the modern Japanese art and design."
