Trueman Wood, suggested that I should make the subject of my course, Deco ration Applied to Modern Houses, I naturally felt that the subject was a wide and difficult one to treat, inasmuch as, even amongst the educated professors of the arts of architecture and painting, there were so many opinions at once diverse, and ofttimes at utter variance with each other but in the belief that aseries of plain practical Lectures on Decoration and Purni ture might be of use to the general public, I accepted the invitation, with the full intention of avoiding, as far as possible, the trammels of any particular school.
