Book Synopsis ICOLD Dam Decommissioning - Guidelines by : CIGB ICOLD
Download or read book ICOLD Dam Decommissioning - Guidelines written by CIGB ICOLD and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-10-04 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dam decommissioning or dam removal has been increasingly common since the past decade. The reason for considering dam removal may have to do with the safety of dams, high repair costs, high operating and maintenance costs, or effects on fish passage and water quality. However, the decision to remove a dam must be based on careful evaluation of the alternatives to address the specific problem at each dam. The ICOLD Committee for decommissioning dams was established in 2005 to develop information that can be used by ICOLD members to respond to questions about the dismantling of dams and to provide a forum for the exchange of information . This ICOLD Bulletin is not intended as a design guide, but as a guide to the decision making process, consultation and regulatory approvals, design and construction issues, sediment management and performance monitoring. The primary aim of these Dam decommissioning guidelines is to provide dam owners, dam engineers and other professionals with the information needed to guide decision making when considering dam dismantling as a project alternative. They are not meant to be used as a design guide, but as a guide to highlighting the points of interest. The guidelines in this ICOLD Bulletin apply only to flood defense structures and not to fall dams.

Book excerpt: Freshwater Ecology, Second Edition, is a broad, up-to-date treatment of everything from the basic chemical and physical properties of water to advanced unifying concepts of the community ecology and ecosystem relationships as found in continental waters. With 40% new and expanded coverage, this text covers applied and basic aspects of limnology, now with more emphasis on wetlands and reservoirs than in the previous edition. It features 80 new and updated figures, including a section of color plates, and 500 new and updated references. The authors take a synthetic approach to ecological problems, teaching students how to handle the challenges faced by contemporary aquatic scientists. This text is designed for undergraduate students taking courses in Freshwater Ecology and Limnology; and introductory graduate students taking courses in Freshwater Ecology and Limnology. Expanded revision of Dodds' successful text. New boxed sections provide more advanced material within the introductory, modular format of the first edition. Basic scientific concepts and environmental applications featured throughout. Added coverage of climate change, ecosystem function, hypertrophic habitats and secondary production. Expanded coverage of physical limnology, groundwater and wetland habitats. Expanded coverage of the toxic effects of pharmaceuticals and endocrine disrupters as freshwater pollutants More on aquatic invertebrates, with more images and pictures of a broader range of organisms Expanded coverage of the functional roles of filterer feeding, scraping, and shredding organisms, and a new section on omnivores. Expanded appendix on standard statistical techniques. Supporting website with figures and tables - http://www.elsevierdirect.com/companion.jsp?ISBN=9780123747242

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by civil engineers, dam safety officials, dam owners, geologists, hydraulic engineers, and risk analysts, this handbook is the first cooperative attempt to provide practical solutions to dam problems within the financial constraints faced by dam owners. It provides hands-on information for identifying and remedying common defects in concrete and masonry dams, embankment dams, reservoirs, and related structures. It also includes procedures for monitoring dams and collecting and analyzing data. Case histories demonstrate economical solutions to specific problems.

Download or read book Cutoffs for Dams written by CIGB ICOLD and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-12-07 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ICOLD Bulletin 150, Cutoffs for Dams, discusses foundation treatment methods using cutoff-type barriers. High emphasis is given to alluvial deposits throughout this document; however, different materials may require cutoff. The construction of cutoffs has made significant advances mainly through the development of more powerful machinery for drilling and excavation, but also through the introduction of new concepts and techniques, such as jet grouting and deep soil mixing. The following types of cutoffs are presented in this Bulletin: - Diaphragm walls - Vib walls - Pile walls - Superimposed concreted galleries - Jet grouting - Deep mixing These methods are described, and the practical application of each method is illustrated by selected case histories. These case histories also demonstrate how certain difficulties specific to a particular dam site have been dealt with. The performance of cutoffs should be monitored so that their efficiency in reducing flow and piezometric head can be evaluated. Piezometers installed in the foundation upstream and downstream of the cutoff are needed to meet this objective.

Book excerpt: Dam removal wasn't a realistic option in the twentieth century, and people who suggested it were dismissed as fringe environmentalists. Over the past twenty years, dam removal has become increasingly common, with dozens of removals now taking place each year in the US. Same River Twice tells the stories of three major Northwestern dam removals - the politics, people, hopes, and fears that shaped three rivers and their communities. Brewitt begins each story with the dam's construction, shows how its critics gained power, details the conflicts and controversies of removal, and explores the aftermath as the river re-established itself.

This book was released on 2013-02-01 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "River restoration is a societal goal in the United States. This collection of research articles focuses on our current understanding of the impacts of removing dams and the role of dam removal in the larger context of river restoration. The papers are grouped by topic: (1) assessment of existing dams, strategies to determine impounded legacy sediments, and evaluating whether or not to remove the dam; (2) case studies of the hydrologic, sediment, and ecosystem impacts of recent dam removals; (3) assessment of river restoration by modifying flows or removing dams; and (4) the concept of river restoration in the context of historical changes in river systems"--Provided by publisher.

Book Synopsis Practitioner's Guide to Hydropower Dam Removal by : Katie Schmidt
Download or read book Practitioner's Guide to Hydropower Dam Removal written by Katie Schmidt and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This practitioner's guide has been developed to assist stakeholders working with hydropower dam owners and licensees to implement the license surrender, decommissioning, and removal of federally regulated dams. It was written and reviewed by staff of American Rivers, an organization that is leading efforts to protect and restore rivers and that published this document, and Hydropower Reform Coalition, a consortium of conservation and recreation organizations that is dedicated to protecting and restoring rivers and watersheds in the U.S. affected by hydropower operations. It brings together the dam removal expertise of American Rivers, the hydropower licensing expertise of the Hydropower Reform Coalition, and the knowledge gained from previous hydropower dam removals to inform future removal projects. This guide covers the critical elements of the policy and practice of removing hydropower dams, defined here as dams regulated by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). The research methods used to develop this guide included the examination of all past removals of FERC-regulated hydropower dams by interviewing individuals involved, compiling documents from the FERC docket, and analyzing reports published on these removals. Interviews with staff from FERC, state and federal agencies, stakeholders across the nation, tribes, and utility owners were conducted to inform both the guide and case studies on individual projects. The appendix comprises twenty-one case studies of successful removals. Each case study is designed as a standalone report and is intended to inform practitioners of the breadth of hydropower dam removals.
