Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British country house has long been regarded as the jewel in the nation's heritage crown. But the country house is also an expression of wealth and power, and as scholars reconsider the nation's colonial past, new questions are being posed about these great houses and their links to Atlantic slavery. This book, authored by a range of academics and heritage professionals, grew out of a 2009 conference on 'Slavery and the British Country house: mapping the current research' organised by English Heritage in partnership with the University of the West of England, the National Trust and the Economic History Society. It asks what links might be established between the wealth derived from slavery and the British country house and what implications such links should have for the way such properties are represented to the public today.Lavishly illustrated and based on the latest scholarship, this wide-ranging and innovative volume provides in-depth examinations of individual houses, regional studies and critical reconsiderations of existing heritage sites, including two studies specially commissioned by English Heritage and one sponsored by the National Trust.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the royal prerogative in terms of its theory, history and application today. The work explores the development of the royal prerogative through the evolution of imperial government, and more recent structural changes in the United Kingdom and elsewhere in the Commonwealth. While examining specific prerogative powers, the development of justiciability of the prerogative, and the exercise of the prerogative, it lays bare the heart of constitutionality in the Westminster system of government. There is said to be a black hole of unaccountable authority at the heart of the constitution and it is this which this book examines. The focus is upon the constitutional development of the United Kingdom and the old dominions of Canada, Australia and New Zealand. This approach is comparative and historical, using specific case studies of such events as the dissolution of Parliament and the appointment and dismissal of Prime Ministers. The book will be of interest to academics and researchers working in the areas of Constitutional Law and Politics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the judges and the work of New Zealand's premier local court during a significant period in its modern history. The period begins in 1958 with the emergence of the New Zealand Court of Appeal as a separate court composed of permanent appellate judges, and it ends with the retirement of Lord Cooke as President of the court in early 1996. This work aims to present the Court of Appeal and its work in its truest form, with particular emphasis on its essential humanity. The book is based on written records and interviews with the judges, barristers, and litigants whose lives helped to shape the court and its work. This book is aimed primarily at the legal community in New Zealand, but it will be of interest to non-lawyers in New Zealand and to overseas readers as well. The introductory chapter outlines the court's historical context and overall development. Part One, Judges of the Court, conveys a sense of the court's human dimension and the imprint that the judges' personalities left on their judicial work. Part Two, Work of the Court, presents the general features of the court's work, the range of processes, interactions, and elements that lay behind the court's judgments, and the New Zealand legal identity that emerged in the court.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the eighteenth-century Enlightenment, Scotland and England produced such well-known figures as David Hume, Adam Smith, and John Locke. Ireland’s contribution to this revolution in Western thought has received much less attention. Offering a corrective to the view that Ireland was intellectually stagnant during this period, The Irish Enlightenment considers a range of artists, writers, and philosophers who were full participants in the pan-European experiment that forged the modern world. Michael Brown explores the ideas and innovations percolating in political pamphlets, economic and religious tracts, and literary works. John Toland, Francis Hutcheson, Jonathan Swift, George Berkeley, Edmund Burke, Maria Edgeworth, and other luminaries, he shows, participated in a lively debate about the capacity of humans to create a just society. In a nation recovering from confessional warfare, religious questions loomed large. How should the state be organized to allow contending Christian communities to worship freely? Was the public confession of faith compatible with civil society? In a society shaped by opposing religious beliefs, who is enlightened and who is intolerant? The Irish Enlightenment opened up the possibility of a tolerant society, but it was short-lived. Divisions concerning methodological commitments to empiricism and rationalism resulted in an increasingly antagonistic conflict over questions of religious inclusion. This fracturing of the Irish Enlightenment eventually destroyed the possibility of civilized, rational discussion of confessional differences. By the end of the eighteenth century, Ireland again entered a dark period of civil unrest whose effects were still evident in the late twentieth century.

Particular attention is paid to four key issues: legal heritage. In particular, the role played by the English to influence our legal heritage. The growing importance of New Zealand's own legal environment and the local modifications implemented largely through statute law. The unique role played by Maori values embodied in particular in the Treaty of Waitangi. The development of New Zealand's legal institutions by our judges and lawyers and the.
