Book excerpt: The Knights of Fury and the Wind Dragons MCs come together in New York Times bestselling author Chantal Fernando’s gritty new series. Wind Dragon princess Cara and ex-cop Decker will have to cross every line to be together—including the law. At a Turning Point It was a typical PI gig: track down the client’s newly discovered half sister. For ex-cop Seth Decker, finding Cara Ward was the easy part. Walking away from the sexy schoolteacher is going to be a whole different story. At a Crossroads Cara thought she had the road ahead all mapped out—she’d be a biker’s old lady, straddling a Harley behind the man she fell for in her teens. But she’s all grown up. And while the Wind Dragons will always be family, Cara wants something more, something for herself. Decker may not be a biker, but that means his woman will always come first. Caught in the Cross Fire Once an MC princess, always an MC princess, though. When Cara’s connection to the Wind Dragons puts her in the line of fire from a gang out for revenge, Decker realizes the safest place for her is by his side. After all, there’s nothing he won’t do to protect the woman he loves. Even if it means crossing the line of the law he once swore to uphold. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leon Surette's new study of T. S. Eliot and Wallace Stevens, The Modern Dilemma, challenges the received view that Stevens' poetry expresses a Humanist world view, and - more surprisingly - documents Eliot's early Humanist phase when Eliot and his bride shared Bertrand Russell's tiny London flat, and later rented a country house together (1914-17). Eliot's poetry of that time - up to The Waste Land is seen to reflect his Humanist phase, closed by his conversion, poetically documented in Ash Wednesday. Where Eliot's poetry is dominated by cultural, religious and philosophical angst, Stevens' is bright, witty, and playful - and commonly dismissed as superficial. The Modern Dilemma challenges this view, demonstrating the seriousness of Stevens' life-long engagement with the modern dilemma of disbelief, and also that, like Eliot, he rejected the Humanist resolution, characterized by Russell in "The Free Man's Worship" as man worshiping "at the shrine that his own hands have built." The study proceeds by juxtaposing the two poets' responses in poetry and prose to the same texts and events: Marianne Moore's poetry; the Great War; Humanists and anti-Humanists; the Franco-Mexican Humanist, Ramon Fernandez; Pure Poetry; and finally the gathering war clouds in the late 'thirties. The strategy is to put the two men in juxtaposition so as to highlight the differences and similarities of their responses to the same issues or the same works. Among the issues under examination is the nature and status of poetry, religious belief or disbelief, and political engagement or the lack thereof.

Book excerpt: Subic Bay, Philippines. The navy's Cold War outpost in the western Pacific. The USS Harvey. A bastion of American sea power in the Far East. But Elliott Decker doesn't give a hoot about all that. He's been on board ship a year, relishing the laid-back lifestyle of the tropical locale. It's not just a job, it's a dream assignment. That is, until a shipmate, Michael Kippen, falls overboard one night and disappears into the South China Sea.The navy rules the death an accident. Decker becomes skeptical when his friend, Vega Magpantay, a rookie with the Olongapo City police, tells him about the Philippine black market for American navy goods. But her hands are tied: the local cops lack jurisdiction over the U.S. military base and her chauvinistic boss doesn't let her do real police work. Undeterred and with a knack for getting others to do his dirty work, Decker and his wingman, Hack Wilson, undertake the snooping.Suspects are plenty among Harvey crewmembers and an attempt on Decker's life ups the ante. Guided by Vega, the sailors uncover evidence that takes them across the naval base, through the backstreets of Olongapo, and into the heart of Manila, rife with the People Power Revolution to overthrow Ferdinand Marcos. When another murder tosses the sailors into ever more dangerous waters, it's up to Decker to find the answers and fast.

Book excerpt: I have written three short Stories involving characters developed from The Assistant, a sea story, my earlier work. The principles, Florence and John Decker are not a youthful married couple or are they your typical man and wife. Their backgrounds are as different as day and night but function better than any oyster movement. Captain John Decker spent most of his adult life at sea; a decorated career naval officer and later as a Licensed Master Mariner in command of a modern containership. His gregorious life style and good living was truncated by an unwilling physcial plant that had enough. Bent, but not broken, John survived and was offered a job ashore by his employer in a less responsible position with comensurate benefits. Life changed and so did John. Never a brilliant leader or exciting entrepreneur he is successful because he thinks logically and communicates well. He would be outstanding if he knew what he was doing. He has survived 8 years in a middle-management role and at age 65 planned to retire. Now married and relatively settled down John plans to become a partner with Flo in a fledgling business, Inquiry Associates. Flo, a lawyer, ex FBI Special Agent and a state Judge has found her true place as head of IA, Inc. Started as a confidential consulting business it quickly evolved into a problem solving legal-investigation resource for the U.S. Government and related friends. As the brains of the organization Flo has numerous friends, acquaintances and people she knows and people that know her on both sides of the law. One word-describes her: integrety. The Deckers try to live a normal life. They are frequently drawn astray by well meaning friends and others that need their special help. This compendium relates to only three episodes in the life and struggles of Florence and John Decker of 1A, Inc., and their daily attempt to normally exist. BOMB A WEIGH: John and Florence Decker try the good life only to be trapped in a national emergency that verges on catastrophe. A small effective and efficient team of government and public volunteers react and with unexpected assistance battle time to seek solution. THE FATHERS: The Deckers are involved in investigating an international crime threat that if expanded can destroy governments and corrupt nations. A quickly organized response team by-passes procedures and attacks processes head-on. The enemy is determined to be more powerful and corrupt than the existing rules can manage, therefore a unique process and people are involved in the resolution. THE PRIZE: The past catches up with John Decker and a friend asks for assistance in a delicate matter involving an Asian nation. Each development creates a bigger problem. Political and international organized forces oppose and interfere at each opportunity. The friends of the Deckers respond and short-circuit processes and reach out to international leaders for help. The Inquiry Associates, Inc., is in over its head until the U.S. Government is forced to be involved; the tide quickly turns as the professionals act.

Book excerpt: XGift By: Oramary This book is about human uniqueness, oneness, resolve, cunning, and sacrifice; characteristics needed to successfully preserve our way of life, and extend our species beyond the final finality all must face. The book illustrates how our history of violence toward one another honed these characteristics. The book illustrates how by honing them, humanity can survive if and when we must face a final conflict. The story points out the necessity to plan ahead for the finality, real problems that must be faced and solved to successfully extend the species. It is hoped that the reader will appreciate these characteristics and realize that while humanity has historically fought one another, we are a single species. And to survive, humanity must act as one.

Feelings of wellbeing and positive outcomes, often impeded by the failure to make decisions, can result when strategies are developed from psychological theories and positive mindsets. Ethical Problem-Solving and Decision-Making for Positive and Conclusive Outcomes is a pivotal reference source that synthesizes major psychological theories to show that any moral dilemma can be solved by using the correct positive mindset based on psychological theory and superimposing a basic ethical template to reach a conclusive decision. While highlighting topics such as cultural identity, student engagement, and education standards, this book is ideally designed for clinical practitioners, psychologists, education professionals, administrators, academicians, and researchers.
