Book Synopsis Pervasive Collaborative Networks by : Luis M. Camarinha-Matos
Download or read book Pervasive Collaborative Networks written by Luis M. Camarinha-Matos and published by Springer. This book was released on 2008-08-27 with total page 634 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: COLLABORATIVE NETWORKS Becoming a pervasive paradigm In recent years the area of collaborative networks is being consolidated as a new discipline (Camarinha-Matos, Afsarmanesh, 2005) that encompasses and gives more structured support to a large diversity of collaboration forms. In terms of applications, besides the “traditional” sectors represented by the advanced supply chains, virtual enterprises, virtual organizations, virtual teams, and their breading environments, new forms of collaborative structures are emerging in all sectors of the society. Examples can be found in e-government, intelligent transportation systems, collaborative virtual laboratories, agribusiness, elderly care, silver economy, etc. In some cases those developments tend to adopt a terminology that is specific of that domain; often the involved actors in a given domain are not fully aware of the developments in the mainstream research on collaborative networks. For instance, the grid community adopted the term “virtual organization” but focused mainly on the resource sharing perspective, ignoring most of the other aspects involved in collaboration. The European enterprise interoperability community, which was initially focused on the intra-enterprise aspects, is moving towards inter-enterprise collaboration. Collaborative networks are thus becoming a pervasive paradigm giving basis to new socio-organizational structures.

Book Synopsis Our Car as Power Plant by : A.J.M. van Wijk
Download or read book Our Car as Power Plant written by A.J.M. van Wijk and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2014-01-31 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fuel cell cars can provide more efficient and cleaner transportation. However, we use our cars for transportation only 5% of the time. When parked, the fuel cell in the car can produce electricity from hydrogen, which is cleaner and more efficient than the current electricity system, generating useful ‘waste’ products in the form of heat and fresh water. The produced electricity, heat and fresh water can be fed into the respective grids or be used directly in our house, office or the school of our kids. The required hydrogen can be produced from gas (natural gas, biogas) or electricity (hydro, wind, solar, etc.). In the end, these fuel cell cars can replace all power plants worldwide. As a result, the ‘car as power plant’ can create an integrated, efficient, reliable, flexible, clean, smart and personalized transport, energy and water system: a real paradigm shift. The ‘Car as Power Plant’ is developed at Delft Technical University, in The Green Village: a sustainable, lively and entrepreneurial environment where we discover, learn and show how to solve society’s urgent challenges. The Green Village unifies clever, imaginative strengths of scientists and entrepreneurs and turns ideas and visions into experiences and commercially viable products and services. Innovative power that sets horizons for a new, sustainable, green and circular economy.

Book Synopsis A Hetero-functional Graph Theory for Modeling Interdependent Smart City Infrastructure by : Wester C. H. Schoonenberg
Download or read book A Hetero-functional Graph Theory for Modeling Interdependent Smart City Infrastructure written by Wester C. H. Schoonenberg and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-12-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cities have always played a prominent role in the prosperity of civilization. Indeed, every great civilization we can think of is associated with the prominence of one or more thriving cities. And so understanding cities -- their inhabitants, their institutions, their infrastructure -- what they are and how they work independently and together -- is of fundamental importance to our collective growth as a human civilization. Furthermore, the 21st century “smart” city, as a result global climate change and large-scale urbanization, will emerge as a societal grand challenge. This book focuses on the role of interdependent infrastructure systems in such smart cities especially as it relates to timely and poignant questions about resilience and sustainability. In particular, the goal of this book is to present, in one volume, a consistent Hetero-Functional Graph Theoretic (HFGT) treatment of interdependent smart city infrastructures as an overarching application domain of engineering systems. This work may be contrasted to the growing literature on multi-layer networks, which despite significant theoretical advances in recent years, has modeling limitations that prevent their real-world application to interdependent smart city infrastructures of arbitrary topology. In contrast, this book demonstrates that HFGT can be applied extensibly to an arbitrary number of arbitrarily connected topologies of interdependent smart city infrastructures. It also integrates, for the first time, all six matrices of HFGT in a single system adjacency matrix. The book makes every effort to be accessible to a broad audience of infrastructure system practitioners and researchers (e.g. electric power system planners, transportation engineers, and hydrologists, etc.). Consequently, the book has extensively visualized the graph theoretic concepts for greater intuition and clarity. Nevertheless, the book does require a common methodological base of its readers and directs itself to the Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) community and the Network Science Community (NSC). To the MBSE community, we hope that HFGT will be accepted as a quantification of many of the structural concepts found in model-based systems engineering languages like SysML. To the NSC, we hope to present a new view as how to construct graphs with fundamentally different meaning and insight. Finally, it is our hope that HFGT serves to overcome many of the theoretical and modeling limitations that have hindered our ability to systematically understand the structure and function of smart cities.

Book Synopsis Gas Generation Strategy by : Great Britain: Department of Energy and Climate Change
Download or read book Gas Generation Strategy written by Great Britain: Department of Energy and Climate Change and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2012-12-05 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The UK faces a threefold energy challenge: how to keep the lights on, at affordable prices while moving towards a sustainable low-carbon future. The Government believes that the best way to meet these goals is with a competitive, diverse, low carbon energy mix. Gas currently forms an integral part of the UK's generation mix and is a reliable, flexible source of electricity. Using gas as fuel in UK power stations currently provides a significant proportion of the country's electricity generation (around 40% in 2011). The Government expects gas to continue to play a major role in the electricity mix over the coming decades, alongside low-carbon technologies. Gas is also the cleanest fossil fuel and will have a key role in decarbonising the UK's economy. Also gas-fired power stations are relatively cheap and quick to build, and investment in new gas plants will offer employment opportunities throughout the country. The strategy is divided into 7 chapters: Chapter 1: Current role of gas generation; 2: Future role of gas generation; 3: Enabling investment in gas generation; 4: Ensuring secure and affordable gas supply; 5: Developing shale resources; 6: Carbon capture and storage; 7: Next steps.

Book Synopsis The Routledge Handbook of Financial Geography by : Janelle Knox-Hayes
Download or read book The Routledge Handbook of Financial Geography written by Janelle Knox-Hayes and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2020-12-14 with total page 648 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook is a comprehensive and up to date work of reference that offers a survey of the state of financial geography. With Brexit, a global recession triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as new financial technology threatening and promising to revolutionize finance, the map of the financial world is in a state of transformation, with major implications for development. With these developments in the background, this handbook builds on this unprecedented momentum and responds to these epochal challenges, offering a comprehensive guide to financial geography. Financial geography is concerned with the study of money and finance in space and time, and their impacts on economy, society and nature. The book consists of 29 chapters organized in six sections: theoretical perspectives on financial geography, financial assets and markets, investors, intermediation, regulation and governance, and finance, development and the environment. Each chapter provides a balanced overview of current knowledge, identifying issues and discussing relevant debates. Written in an analytical and engaging style by authors based on six continents from a wide range of disciplines, the work also offers reflections on where the research agenda is likely to advance in the future. The book’s key audience will primarily be students and researchers in geography, urban studies, global studies and planning, more or less familiar with financial geography, who seek access to a state-of-the art survey of this area. It will also be useful for students and researchers in other disciplines, such as finance and economics, history, sociology, anthropology, politics, business studies, environmental studies and other social sciences, who seek convenient access to financial geography as a new and relatively unfamiliar area. Finally, it will be a valuable resource for practitioners in the public and private sector, including business consultants and policy-makers, who look for alternative approaches to understanding money and finance.

Book Synopsis Development-induced Displacement and Human Rights in Africa by : Romola Adeola
Download or read book Development-induced Displacement and Human Rights in Africa written by Romola Adeola and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-09-21 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the context of the 2009 Kampala Convention, this book examines how a balance can be struck between the imperative of development projects and the rights of persons likely to be displaced in Africa. Following independence, many African states embarked on large-scale development projects such as dams, urban renewal and extraction of natural resources and have had to grapple with how to protect displaced communities while implementing development projects. These projects were considered a panacea for Africa’s development and the economic interests of the majority were often considered over and above the interests of the minority of people who were displaced by these projects .This book examines how a balance can be struck between the imperative of development and the rights of displaced persons within the context of the African Union Convention on the Protection and Assistance of Internally Displaced Persons in Africa (the Kampala Convention). Romola Adeola analyses the obligations that are placed on African states by the Kampala Convention in the context of development-induced displacement. This book will be of interest to scholars of human rights law, forced migration, African Studies and development.
