Book Synopsis Freezing Fertility by : Lucy van de Wiel
Download or read book Freezing Fertility written by Lucy van de Wiel and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2020-12-15 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcomed as liberation and dismissed as exploitation, egg freezing (oocyte cryopreservation) has rapidly become one of the most widely-discussed and influential new reproductive technologies of this century. In Freezing Fertility, Lucy van de Wiel takes us inside the world of fertility preservation—with its egg freezing parties, contested age limits, proactive anticipations and equity investments—and shows how the popularization of egg freezing has profound consequences for the way in which female fertility and reproductive aging are understood, commercialized and politicized. Beyond an individual reproductive choice for people who may want to have children later in life, Freezing Fertility explores how the rise of egg freezing also reveals broader cultural, political and economic negotiations about reproductive politics, gender inequities, age normativities and the financialization of healthcare. Van de Wiel investigates these issues by analyzing a wide range of sources—varying from sparkly online platforms to heart-breaking court cases and intimate autobiographical accounts—that are emblematic of each stage of the egg freezing procedure. By following the egg’s journey, Freezing Fertility examines how contemporary egg freezing practices both reflect broader social, regulatory and economic power asymmetries and repoliticize fertility and aging in ways that affect the public at large. In doing so, the book explores how the possibility of egg freezing shifts our relation to the beginning and end of life.

Book excerpt: Infertility: Psychological Issues and Counseling Strategies is a valuable reference for mental health professionals who treat individuals and couples grappling with the psychological and emotional strains of infertility and its treatment. Drawing upon their professional experiences as well as the current literature in the field, leading practitioners consider the differences in how women and men react to a diagnosis of infertility and describe strategies for helping individuals deal with the anxieties, feelings of inadequacy, and low self-esteem that can follow such a diagnosis. These experts examine the effects of infertility on love, sex, and other facets of a relationship and detail methods for helping couples resolve conflicts about infertility. They explore the latest findings on pregnancy-related stress and its possible somatic effects, and they describe effective stress management techniques. They offer practical guidelines for helping patients to cope with failed fertility treatments and manage the grief of a miscarriage. And they examine a wide range of clinical issues surrounding alternative routes to parenting, including adoption.

Book Synopsis Analyzing Contemporary Fertility by : Robert Schoen
Download or read book Analyzing Contemporary Fertility written by Robert Schoen and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-08-12 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume offers state-of-the-art research on the dynamics of contemporary fertility by examining the implications of the economic and social forces that are driving the rapid change in fertility behavior, and the changing context, determinants, and measurement of contemporary human reproduction. The volume explores new theoretical avenues that seek to incorporate uncertainty, examine social contagion effects, and explain the rise in childlessness. Reproductive attitudes are re-examined in chapters that deal with models of parenthood and with the persistence of race-ethnic-nativity differences. A new and important subject of multi-partner fertility is also described by examining it in the context of total fertility and from the usually neglected perspective of men. The impact of divorce on fertility, the measurement of childlessness and the postponement of first births, developments in assortative mating and fertility, and current patterns of interracial fertility are also addressed in this volume. By combining up-to-date research spanning the entire field to illuminate contemporary developments, the book is a valuable source for demographers, sociologists, economists, and all those interested in understanding fertility in today's world.

Book Synopsis A Phenomenological Study of Women's Family Planning Decisions Following Infertility by : Sarah Zwikelmaier
Download or read book A Phenomenological Study of Women's Family Planning Decisions Following Infertility written by Sarah Zwikelmaier and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the factors that play a role in decision making undertaken when a woman is faced with infertility, and whether or not art therapy can be helpful within this process. Seven individuals were interviewed about their infertility experience and offered the chance to participate in an art making activity. These methods of inquiry were selected to uncover the meaning that women ascribed to their infertility experiences. The results indicated that women's decision making regarding their infertility was impacted by social, medical, cultural and religious factors. In addition, the results were unable to show whether or not art therapy is an effective intervention with this population because the researcher was unable to consistently offer the art making activity at the end of each interview. It was found that the art making portion of the interview was not feasibly supported within the overall interview structure. Themes of revising fertility expectations, the impact of others, acceptance, and setting limits were articulated through the particpants' personal narratives. This research explores these themes and expands upon the results to identify possibilities for future research.
Download or read book Choice written by Karen E. Bender and published by MP Publishing. This book was released on 2010-05-22 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A moving collection of personal essays about the real, human experiences behind the highly politicized issue of reproductive choice. At a time when a woman’s most complex decisions have been reduced to political rhetoric and impersonal theory, and political debate has been hijacked by pundits and name-callers, Choice joins the discourse with an assortment of candid voices in an effort to humanize the debate about reproductive rights. In addressing a wide range of women’s choices — from using birth control to taking the morning-after pill, from adopting a child to putting a child up for adoption, from having an abortion to bringing a pregnancy to full term — 'Choice' explores the complexities inherent in every reproductive decision. Including twenty-four honest, heartrending essays from established writers such as Francine Prose, Jacquelyn Mitchard, Pam Houston, Ann Hood, and Sarah Messer and emerging talents such as Kimi Faxon Hemingway, Stephanie Anderson, and Ashley Talley, 'Choice' will allow you to truly understand the meaning of the word “choice” — regardless of what side of the debate you stand on.
