Book excerpt: New high-spin levels have been identified in the nucleus 12°Pd from analysis of the coincidence gamma rays observed in the 238U([alpha], f[gamma][gamma][gamma]) reaction. Recoiling fragments were detected with the Rochester heavy-ion detector array, CHICO, in coincidence with gamma-rays using Gammasphere. An A=110-130 mass-gated [gamma] - [gamma] - [gamma] cube from this experiment was constructed and analyzed for coincident gamma-rays in several nuclei near A=120. New results for neutron-rich 118Pd and 12°Pd have been obtained. The 12°Pd level scheme was extended to spin of 10 by building on the new low-energy gamma rays identified in decay studies of 12°Rh. The details of the 118Pd level scheme derived from this work are compared to previous work. The systematics of the yrast levels in even-even Pd and Cd isotopes are presented and the symmetry of energy levels around N = 68 is discussed. A new 10 level in 124Cd has been observed. The population intensity of even-even neutron-rich Cd isotopes is deduced, indicating that nuclides near 12°Cd are preferentially populated following alpha-induced fission of 238U.

Book excerpt: Gamma-Ray Infrastructure For Fundamental Investigations of Nuclei (GRIFFIN) is a new high-efficiency $\gamma$-ray spectrometer designed for use in decay spectroscopy experiments with low-energy radioactive ion beams provided by TRIUMF's Isotope Separator and Accelerator (ISAC-I) facility. The high-efficiency GRIFFIN array comprises 16 Compton-suppressed large-volume HPGe clovers, and is designed to be used with a suite of ancillary detectors, providing a powerful and versatile tool for studying exotic nuclei. The structures of $N = 82$ nuclei below doubly-magic $^{132}$Sn are crucial for calculations of the astrophysical r-process as these isotopes form `waiting-points' that play an important role in the formation and shape of the second $r$-process abundance peak. Many of the most neutron-rich $N = 82$ nuclei are, however, out of reach to the current generation of radioactive beam facilities and their properties must be predicted. In the past, shell-model calculations for the half-lives of these nuclei have been performed by adjusting the quenching of the Gamow-Teller (GT) operator in order to reproduce the half-life of $^{130}$Cd. However, the calculated half-lives of the nuclei below $^{130}$Cd are known to be systematically too large. A recent measurement of the $^{130}$Cd half-life with EURICA indicated a shorter half-life of $^{130}$Cd, which would lead to a re-scaling of the GT quenching by a constant factor for all nuclei in the region and potentially resolves the discrepancy. However, the reduced quenching of the GT operator implied by these results creates a new discrepancy in the calculated half-life of the $N=82$ isotope $^{131}$In. Half-life measurements of nuclei in this region are complicated due to the presence of $\beta$-decaying isomers with comparable half-lives and large $\beta n$ branches, making $\gamma$-ray photo-peak gating with a high-resolution, high-efficiency, $\gamma$-ray spectrometer an ideal method to measure each of the isomeric half-lives. In this work, measurements of the half-lives of the $^{128-130}$Cd isotopes were performed. The half-life of the $N=82$ $r$-process waiting point nucleus $^{130}$Cd was measured to be 126(4)~ms confirming the EURICA measurements and in strong disagreement with the earlier measurements of 162(7)~ms and 195(35)~ms. A detailed data set for the $\beta$ and $\beta n$ decay of $^{131}$In was also analyzed. The $\beta$ decay from the single proton hole nucleus $^{131}$In to the single neutron hole nucleus $^{131}$Sn is of current interest with respect to advancing our understanding of nuclear forces and shell evolution in this region, including modelling the astrophysical $r$-process. In this work, three different $\beta$ decaying states in $^{131}$In were studied in detail, providing new information about the shell structure of $^{131}$Sn. The half-lives of these three $\beta$ decaying states of $^{131}$In measured in this work agree with the previous measurements. The half-life of each $\beta$ decaying state of $^{131}$In is significantly longer than the half-life predicted from shell-model calculations.

The half-life and the gamma-gamma coincidence spectra were used to study the nuclear structure. A new 82,83Zn [82Zn, 83Zn] decay-scheme was built, where a 71±7% beta-delayed neutron branching ratio was assigned in 82Zn [82Zn] decay. New gamma-ray lines and energy levels observed in 82,83Ga [82Ga, 83Ga] beta-decay were used to update previously reported decayschemes. The experimental results were compared to shell model calculations, which postulate the existence of Gamow-Teller transitions in these decays. The half-lives of 155±17 and 122±28 ms were determined for 82,83Zn, respectively. In order to enable future studies of very neutron rich isotopes a new detector was developed as a second project. This detector is intended for use in fragmentation type experiments, which require segmentation in order to enable implantation-decay correlations. In addition, the detector requires good timing resolution for neutron time-of-ight experiments. A Position Sensitive Photo-Multiplier Tube (PSPMT) from Hamamatsu coupled with a 16x16 fast pixelated plastic scintillator was used. The PSPMT's anodes form 8x8 segment panel used for position reconstruction. Position localization has been achieved for energies range of 0.5-5 MeV. A single signal dynode (DY12) shows a sufficient time resolution between this signal and the anode's signals, which enable us to used DY12 signal alone as a trigger for timing purposes. The detector's DY12 signals was tested with reference detectors and it provided a sub-nanosecond time resolution through the use of a pulse-shape analysis algorithm, which is sufficient for use in experiments with the requirement for the fast timing. The detector ability to survive after implanting high-energy ions was tested using a laser that simulated energy of 1 GeV. The recovery time of the detector in this situation was 200 nanosecond.
