Book excerpt: We calculate the B-meson decay constants fB, fBs, and their ratio in unquenched lattice QCD using domain-wall light quarks and relativistic b-quarks. We use gauge-field ensembles generated by the RBC and UKQCD collaborations using the domain-wall fermion action and Iwasaki gauge action with three flavors of light dynamical quarks. We analyze data at two lattice spacings of a ≈ 0.11, 0.086 fm with unitary pion masses as light as M[pi] ≈ 290 MeV; this enables us to control the extrapolation to the physical light-quark masses and continuum. For the b-quarks we use the anisotropic clover action with the relativistic heavy-quark interpretation, such that discretization errors from the heavy-quark action are of the same size as from the light-quark sector. We renormalize the lattice heavy-light axial-vector current using a mostly nonperturbative method in which we compute the bulk of the matching factor nonperturbatively, with a small correction, that is close to unity, in lattice perturbation theory. We also improve the lattice heavy-light current through O([alpha]sa). We extrapolate our results to the physical light-quark masses and continuum using SU(2) heavy-meson chiral perturbation theory, and provide a complete systematic error budget. We obtain fB0 = 196.2(15.7) MeV, fB+ = 195.4(15.8) MeV, fBs = 235.4(12.2) MeV, fBs/fB0 = 1.193(59), and fBs/fB+ = 1.220(82), where the errors are statistical and total systematic added in quadrature. In addition, these results are in good agreement with other published results and provide an important independent cross check of other three-flavor determinations of B-meson decay constants using staggered light quarks.

This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a unique collection of reviews that share a common topic, emergent phenomena in atomic nuclei, while revealing the multifaceted nature of the subject, from quarks to heavy nuclei. It tells an amazing story of a decades-long journey of trials and successes, up to present days, with the aim to understand the vast array of experimental data and the fundamentals of strongly interacting fermions. The emphasis is on discovering emergent orderly patterns amidst the overarching complexity of many-particle quantum-mechanical systems. Recent findings are discussed within an interesting framework: a combination of nuclear theory and experiment, of group theory and computational science, and of pivotal models of astonishing simplicity and state-of-the-art models empowered by supercomputers.A special theme resonates throughout the book: the important role of symmetries, exact and approximate, in exposing emergent features and guiding large-scale nuclear modeling. World-renowned experts offer their unique perspective on symmetries in the world of quarks and gluons, and that of protons and neutrons — from chiral symmetry, through spin-isospin and quasi-spin symmetries, to symplectic symmetry, — as well as on the emergent nature of nuclear collectivity, clustering, and pairing, viewed from spectroscopy, microscopic considerations, and first principles. The book provides an excellent foundation that allows researchers and graduate students in physics and applied mathematics to review the current status of the subject, and to further explore the research literature through exhaustive sets of references that also point to studies underpinned by similar techniques in condensed matter and atomic physics along with quantum information.

Book excerpt: We calculate the leptonic decay constants of B_{(s)} and D_{(s)} mesons in lattice QCD using staggered light quarks and Fermilab bottom and charm quarks. We compute the heavy-light meson correlation functions on the MILC asqtad-improved staggered gauge configurations which include the effects of three light dynamical sea quarks. We simulate with several values of the light valence- and sea-quark masses (down to m̃_s/10) and at three lattice spacings (a ̃0.15, 0.12, and 0.09 fm) and extrapolate to the physical up and down quark masses and the continuum using expressions derived in heavy-light meson staggered chiral perturbation theory. We renormalize the heavy-light axial current using a mostly nonperturbative method such that only a small correction to unity must be computed in lattice perturbation theory and higher-order terms are expected to be small. We obtain f_{B+̂} = 196.9(8.9) MeV, f_{B_s} = 242.0(9.5) MeV, f_{D+̂} = 218.9(11.3) MeV, f_{D_s} = 260.1(10.8) MeV, and the SU(3) flavor-breaking ratios f_{B_s}/f_{B} = 1.229(26) and f_{D_s}/f_{D} = 1.188(25), where the numbers in parentheses are the total statistical and systematic uncertainties added in quadrature.

Book excerpt: This 2nd edition is an extensive update of "B Decays?. The revisions are necessary because of the extensive amount of new data and new theoretical ideas. This book reviews what is known about b-quark decays and also looks at what can be learned in the future. The importance of this research area is increasing, as evidenced by the approval of the luminosity upgrade for CESR and the asymmetric B factories at SLAC and KEK, and the possibility of experiments at hadron colliders. The key experimental observations made thus far, measurement of the lifetimes of the different B species, B0-B0 mixing, the discovery of ?Penguin? mediated decays, and the extraction of the CKM matrix elements Vub and Vcb from semileptonic decays, as well as more mundane results, are described in great detail by the experimentalists who have been closely involved with making the measurements. Theoretical progress in understanding b-quark decays using HQET and lattice gauge techniques are described by theorists who have developed and used these techniques.Synthesizing the experimental and theoretical information, several articles discuss the implications for the ?Standard Model? and how further tests can be done using measurements of CP violation in the B system.

Book excerpt: This book contains write-ups of lectures from a summer school for advanced graduate students in elementary particle physics. In the first lecture, Scott Willenbrock gives an overview of the standard model of particle physics. This is followed by reviews of specific areas of standard model physics: precision electroweak analysis by James Wells, quantum chromodynamics and jets by George Sterman, and heavy quark effective field by Matthias Neubert. Developments in neutrino physics are discussed by André de Gouvea and the theory behind the Higgs boson is addressed by Laura Reina. Collider phenomenology from both experimental and theoretical perspectives are highlighted by Heidi Schellman and Tao Han. A brief survey of dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking is provided by R Sekhar Chivukula and Elizabeth H Simmons. Martin Schmaltz covers the recent proposals for “little” Higgs theories. Markus Luty describes what is needed to make supersymmetric theories realistic by breaking supersymmetry. There is an entire series of lectures by Raman Sundrum, Graham Kribs, and Csaba Csáki on extra dimensions. Finally, Keith Olive completes the book with a review of astrophysics.

(a) improved with non-perturbative coefficients where available. The results and systematic errors are discussed in detail. Results for vector decay constants, flavour symmetry breaking ratios of decay constants, the pseudoscalar-vector mass splitting and D meson masses are also presented.

Heavy quarks are incorporated using the Wilson clover action with the Fermilab interpretation. This analysis includes ensembles at five lattice spacings from [alpha] ≈ 0.045 to 0.15 fm, and light sea-quark masses down to 1/20th of the strange-quark mass. Projected error budgets for ratios of decay constants, in particular between bottom- and charm-meson decay constants, are presented.

Book excerpt: The QNP series of international conferences on Quarks and Nuclear Physics is by now a well established and highly respected forum where the most recent developments in the field are discussed and communicated. QNP 2006 is the forth edition of this biennial meeting. Selected and refereed original contributions of QNP 2006 have been published in The European Physical Journal A - Hadrons and Nuclei (EPJ A), while the present proceedings book, in addition to reprinting the articles published in EPJ A, further includes all other contributions selected and accepted by the organizing committee for publication and archiving.
