When the ferry pilot is discovered under a pier with a knife in his back, Inspector Littlejohn is called in. But he and Sergeant Cromwell are struggling to find clues. Barri Flowers, award-winning criminologist and the bestselling author of Murderess on the Loose, Murder of the Doctor’s Wife, Murder at the Pencil Factory, and The Sex Slave Murders, comes the gripping historical true crime short, Murdered by the King of Western Swing: The Beating Death of Ella Mae Cooley in 1961. On Monday, April 3, 1961, thirty-eight-year-old former vocalist Ella Mae Cooley was beaten to death in her home in Willow Springs, an unincorporated area located in Kern County, California. The cruelty of the crime was shocking to local residents in the normally idyllic community. A greater shock was that the murder was committed by the victim’s fifty-year-old husband, Donnell Clyde Cooley, a well-known big band leader, musician, actor, host of a television variety show, and businessman. Ella Mae and Donnell Clyde, who generally went by the name Spade Cooley, were both struggling with accusations of unfaithfulness in their marriage that had produced two children. They were in the midst of a divorce when tragedy struck. Cooley snapped in deciding to end the marriage prematurely by murdering his wife The horrific assault was witnessed by the couple’s fourteen-year-old daughter, Melody, who would testify against her father at his trial. In spite of her untimely presence at the crime scene, Cooley sought to attribute Ella Mae’s death to an accident. This fell flat, as did a short-lived attempt to plead insanity in the death of his wife. Spade Cooley would be convicted of murder and sent to prison for his heinous act of criminality, forever casting a shadow over a successful career in Western swing music and television. See how this tragic story of celebrity, suspicion, and homicidal rage unfolds in the historical crime of passion. Included is a complete bonus historical short tale, The Gold Special Train Robbery: Deadly Crimes of the D’Autremont Brothers, as well as excerpts from the author’s bestselling true crime book, Serial Killer Couples; the riveting historical true crime short, Murder of the Banker's Daughter: The Killing of Marion Parker; and the gripping historical true crime tale, Mass Murder in the Sky: The Bombing of Flight 629.

Book excerpt: “Slow and steady wins the case” as a dedicated London policeman puzzles through a fatal fall, a financial mystery, and an eccentric family’s many secrets (Kirkus Reviews). Miss Penelope Blow’s fatal fall from her bedroom window would seem like a tragic accident, if it weren’t for Penelope’s multiple visits to Scotland Yard before her death, trying to get in touch with Inspector Littlejohn. Now, before he ever had a chance to talk to the woman, he’s driven to look deeper into a case that may very well be murder—with no cooperation from Penelope’s wealthy, secretive, and thoroughly odd family . . . “As is often the case in Bellairs’ novels, his prose is often very wryly amusing. . . . One of his most readable tales, offering an interesting mix of characters and a satisfying puzzle to solve.” —Mysteries Ahoy

Thanks to its mayor, Sir Gideon Ware, the quiet harbor town of Westcombe has turned into a crowded and rather garish seaside destination where visitors can come to escape the stress of wartime. When Ware collapses at a lavish luncheon, felled by strychnine, Inspector Littlejohn must travel from London to solve the seemingly inexplicable murder. Ware was surrounded by local bigwigs at his table—but that’s just the beginning of the suspect list, as Littlejohn untangles the rivalries, resentments, and corrupt dealings that permeate this picturesque but troubled community . . . Praise for the Inspector Littlejohn mysteries “Assured prose, well-drawn characters, and the atmosphere of 1940s wartime England . . . well worth the reader’s time.” —Publishers Weekly “Everything is quite comparable in tone to a really good Simenon.” —The New York Times “Dryly ceremonious wit [that] shines from the very first page.” —Kirkus Reviews

Book excerpt: Summer finally arrived and Jim Edwards and his friends Dan, Bob, and Steve, all decided they would take a ride cross-country on a 19th-century train that was refurbished to attract tourists and show what it was like to travel on a train from that era. Jim wanted to celebrate their retirement together on a piece of history that had been forgotten. Jim called Dan and told him to make sure Bob and Steve were at his house by three p.m. because the train left at four p.m. The weather was beautiful outside, perfect for a train ride. Jim got out his suitcase packed his belongings loaded his suitcase in his trunk and drove to Dan's house to pick up his buddies, who were waiting for his arrival. Jim pulled into Dan's driveway and honked his horn to let his buddies know he was outside waiting on them. Dan, Bob, and Steve brought out their suitcases loaded them into Jim's trunk got in the car, and drove to the train station for a fun-filled week of gazing at the beautiful scenery as the train traveled through the mountains of many states along the way. Little did these friends know that their retirement trip on the train would send them into a world of the unknown. Finally, Jim and his friends arrived at the train station fifteen minutes before the train's departure, so they had enough time to check in their luggage and board the train. Jim said, "Is everyone ready for a great experience?" Everyone said "Yes!" Jim and his friends boarded the train and the train blew its whistle and then slowly picked up speed down the railway through the tunnel. Jim and his friends were excited to be traveling together as friends on a 19th-century train. Everything was going fine until a stranger entered their coach seating compartment put his carry-on bag above Jim and Dan and said "I hope you all don't mind if I share your compartment because the other compartments are full." Jim replied, "I think that will be alright." Steve chimed in and said, "What is your name?" The stranger replied as he chuckled, "Dr. Death." Everyone started laughing and Bob asked, "How did you get that name?" "Because of these cards, as the cards spilled out onto the cabin floor," replied Dr. Death. The men laughed and Dan stood up and got on his knees to help Dr. Death pick up his cards of death. Dr. Death sat down on the seat and asked "Would anyone like to play?" Steve chimed in and said, "Sure, sounds like a lot of fun." Dan said "I know what kind of cards these are. They’re Tarot cards and I've seen a fortune teller use these and I think it’s just entertainment. There is no truth to what these cards can do." Dr. Death chuckled and said "No! You are mistaken young man. These cards are the cards of death, and if you play these cards will tell you how you will die."
