Book Synopsis Cyril of Alexandria's Trinitarian Theology of Scripture by : Matthew R. Crawford
Download or read book Cyril of Alexandria's Trinitarian Theology of Scripture written by Matthew R. Crawford and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2014-08-28 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More exegetical literature survives from the hand of Cyril of Alexandria than nearly any other Greek patristic author, yet this sizable body of work has scarcely received the degree of attention it deserves. In this work, Matthew R. Crawford reconstructs the intellectual context that gave rise to this literary output and highlights Cyril's Trinitarian theology, received as an inheritance from the fourth century, as the most important defining factor. Cyril's appropriation of pro-Nicene Trinitarianism is evident in both of his theology of revelation and his theology of exegesis, the two foci that comprise his doctrine of Scripture. Revelation, in his understanding, proceeds from the Father, through the Son, and in the Spirit, following the order of Trinitarian relations. Moreover, this pattern applies to the inspiration of Scripture as well, insofar as inspiration occurs when the Son indwells human authors by the Spirit and speaks the words of the Father. Although Cyril's interpretation of revelation may consequently be called 'Trinitarian', it is also resolutely Christological, since the divine and incarnate Son functions as the central content and mediator of all divine unveiling. Corresponding to this divine movement towards humanity in revelation is humanity's appropriation of divine life according to the reverse pattern—in the Spirit, through the Son, unto the Father. Applied to exegesis, this Trinitarian pattern implies that the Spirit directs the reader of Scripture to a Christological interpretation of the text, through which the believer beholds the incarnate Son, the exemplar of virtue and the perfect image of the Father, and accordingly advances in both virtue and knowledge. This process continues until the final eschatological vision when the types and riddles of Scripture will be done away with in light of the overwhelming clarity of the Christologically-mediated Trinitarian vision.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Feminist icon bell hooks reminds us of the full spectrum of feeling we spend in love through her inspiring collection of love poetry, with a new introduction by Cole Arthur Riley, author of Black Liturgies. Written from the heart, When Angels Speak of Love is a book of fifty love poems by bell hooks, one our most beloved public intellectuals, and author of over twenty books, including the bestselling All About Love. Poem after poem, hooks challenges our views and experiences with love—tracing the links between seduction and surrender, the intensity of desire, and the anguish of death. “Love must clean house, choose memories to keep, and memories to let go,” she writes. These verses are expansive yet accessible—encompassing romantic love, to love of family, friends, or oneself. In any iteration, these poems remind us of both the beauty and possibility of love.

Book excerpt: Loneliness, fear, vulnerability, conflict, pain--these aren't experiences we typically seek out. And yet we all encounter them during our lives. Do you embrace these times, or do you raise your defenses, determined not to get hurt? What if it's possible to see God more clearly in the midst of these trials? In Undefended, Daniel Bush shows readers how to approach life's difficulties from a gospel-centered and grace-driven perspective, arguing that the experiences we avoid can actually bring us nearer to Christ. Drawing on examples from the Bible, history, popular culture, and the author's own life, Undefended seeks to personally acquaint readers with an experience of the inner heart, where true discovery of God takes place. Bush writes out of a deep passion for helping others find spiritual awakening, stemming from over 15 years in pastoral and counseling ministries. Book Synopsis Matej's Legacy by : DONALD F. CHMELKA
Download or read book Matej's Legacy written by DONALD F. CHMELKA and published by Author House. This book was released on 2003-12-02 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Matej's Legacy is a nonfiction chronicle following the author's Czech family through 20th-century history. It is a sequel to Matej's Journey to America that creatively traced the Chmelkas to biblical times, and then journeyed with them through six millennia from present-day Iraq, to the Czech Republic, and finally to America. The author's great-great-grandfather was born as the Rocky Mountain fur trade boomed in 1825, and grew up on a 13-acre farm in Moravia where the Chmelkas had been serfs since Charlemagne was crowned the first Holy Roman Emperor. Gold, homesteads and Texas longhorns lured thousands of oppressed Europeans to America in the mid-1800s, riding on steamships and railroads that now made long-distance travel feasible. Prussia established its European dominance in 1871 when railroads closed by war reopened to civilians, allowing Matej to flee his beloved motherland for a free homestead in Nebraska. He found a difficult life on the prairie with grasshoppers, drought, hail and fires destroying crops—spurring his 14-year-old son to join a Texas cattle drive and then to dodge Indians and gunfighters throughout the romantic era of the Wild West. Matej died in 1902, leaving his family little wealth, but a legacy, the first 100-years of which is covered in this book. Henry Ford, the Wright brothers, Thomas Edison and other inventors were creating a New World, and the Czechs finally found independence thanks to World War I, which put an end to feudalism but gave birth to Communism. Technology in transportation, agriculture and communications continued to expand during the Roaring Twenties, and a Democratic America became the hope to millions still victimized by brutal dictators. Good times gave way to the Great Depression and the author was born on a primitive Nebraska farm as a new war spread around the globe. Germany and Japan were brought to their knees, but the world was introduced to nuclear horror and was soon threatened by Russian, Chinese, Korean and Vietnamese Communists—ungrateful allies vowing to bury American Capitalism. The Middle East and Africa were now freed from European colonialism, but instead of developing natural resources for the benefit of their citizens, rival leaders wallowed in tribal warfare. Israel became the incendiary target for Muslims who controlled much of the world's oil, now in great demand as the automobile and airplane gave new mobility to man. As the world's leader, America became its policeman, taking on one evil empire after another. Korea and Vietnam were not proud moments, yet Communism fell to economic demands that only Democratic Capitalism could meet. The Czech Republic and the entire Russian Bloc were suddenly free, but as the world relaxed, a war of terror began, financed by Arab oil and executed by Muslim extremists. Outmatched in technology, failing regimes retreated to guerilla warfare, determined to outlast a culture softened by instant gratification. Lebanon, Palestine, Yugoslavia, Afghanistan and Iraq became major hotspots while Africa simmered under tribal warfare with millions dying from AIDS and starvation. Matej's Legacy integrates the world events of the past 100 years with the Chmelka family story, including the author's journey from farm boy to engineer and executive in the automotive and aerospace industries. He retired in 1997 and began writing a two-volume epic, concluding in 2003 when the United States remained the world's primary protector; but sadly, often criticized and hated by cynics and political opportunists. American immigrants are generally grateful for the opportunities and freedom our great country offers, and many of the world's downtrodden continue their desperate journeys to our shores. Others jealously preach hatred and death to America, but as descendants of those who sacrificed much to be here, let us never forget our legacy.
Book Synopsis Recollections of Alexander H. Stephens by : Alexander Stephens
Download or read book Recollections of Alexander H. Stephens written by Alexander Stephens and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 1998-06-01 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From May 27 to October 12, 1865, while imprisoned by the Union army, the Confederate vice-president Alexander Stephens confided to the pages of a journal his struggle between extraordinarily rich inner resources of mind and spirit and a harrowingly uncertain existence fraught with illness, deprivation, isolation, despondency, and humiliation. For Stephens, the journal -- which he would not allow to be published while he was alive -- may have manifested his severest trial and his utmost success in perseverance and good humor.Ben Forkner's introduction to this new edition of Myrta Lockett Avary's 1910 publication offers fresh and fetching consideration of Stephens' prison diary both as a reflection of the American Republic that disappeared in the Civil War and as a profoundly personal statement revelatory of the character and principles that won Stephens respect from southerners and northerners alike.
