Book excerpt: Dear Sister, It wasn't your fault; it was never your fault. You did nothing wrong. Hold this tight to your heart: it wasn't your fault. At night when you lay there and your mind fills with images and you wonder if only, if you had . . . if you hadn't . . . . Remember: it wasn't your fault. Dear Sister highlights the lessons, memories, and vision of over forty artists, activists, mothers, writers, and students who share a common bond: they are survivors of sexual violence. Written in an epistolary format, this multi-generational, multi-ethnic collection of letters and essays is a moving journey into the hearts and minds of the survivors of rape, incest, and other forms of sexual violence, written directly to and for other survivors. Dear Sister goes far beyond traditional books about healing, which often use "experts" to explain the experience of survivors for the rest of the world. Where other books about rape weave the voices of feminists and activists together and imagine what a world without violence might look like, Dear Sister describes the reality of what the world looks like through the eyes of a survivor. From a professor in the Midwest to a poet in Belgium, an escapee from a child prostitution ring, a survivor advocate in the Congo, and a sex worker in San Francisco, Dear Sister touches on issues of feminism, love, disability, gender, justice, identity, and spirituality. Lisa Factora-Borchers is a Filipina writer and editor whose work has been published in make/shift, Bitch, Left Turn, and Critical Moment. Trauma-Informed Yoga for Survivors of Sexual Assault provides a comprehensive overview of how to offer yoga to survivors of sexual assault in a safe, effective, evidence-based, and healing way. Transcending Sexual Trauma through Yoga founder Zahabiyah A. Yamasaki draws on the framework of trauma-informed care and trauma-informed yoga program development and curriculum, while also weaving in personal narrative and inspiring survivor stories. She explores practical considerations for survivors, as well as for yoga teachers, mental health professionals, educators, and other healing professionals who are interested in integrating trauma-informed yoga into the scope of their work and/or healing. This book expands the scope and framework for healing and fills a much-needed gap in service delivery for survivors. Yamasaki provides holistic, trauma-informed, body-based, compassionate, and culturally affirming options for survivors as they navigate what is oftentimes a lifelong and nonlinear process of healing. A companion card deck of affirmations, Trauma-Informed Yoga for Survivors of Sexual Assault: Practices for Healing and Teaching with Compassion, is also available, both as a stand-alone item and in a discounted set with the book.

Book excerpt: Written by a survivor of sex trafficking, Survivor's Guide to Money: How to Use Money as a Tool When It Was Used Against You as a Weapon is the first financial literacy curriculum for survivors of sex trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation. Survivor's Guide to Money is an evidence-based program designed to help survivors: - Developed safety and self-care plans to work through high-stress financial situations - Learn to track spending and saving habits - Understand financial abuse and its long-term impact on financial wellness issues - Examine the concept of self-worth - Grieve the loss of time and money following exploitation - Learn and practice communication and boundary tools - Identify common triggers around money … and much more! This workbook is designed to give survivors a framework to understand the financial abuse they endured, identify obstacles, and set goals to work towards on their journey to financial wellness. The first four chapters in this workbook are the "prep work" before the deeper process begins. They are critical groundwork that must be done to maximize the effectiveness of the rest of the workbook. The next four chapters are focused on working through some key areas where survivors experience trauma and ongoing damage even long after they have found their freedom from their abuser(s). The remaining chapters in the third and final section shift into thinking about the future, creating goals, and developing a plan to achieve them. By taking a critical look at where you have come from, where you are now, and where you want to be in the future, survivors will complete this workbook with a clear plan of action. This workbook is designed to be used in a variety of formats. First, it can be used by an individual in a self-paced setting. Or, it can be used in group formats (peer support groups, residential programming, or supplement direct service outpatient services).

Book excerpt: What would happen if we believed women? A groundbreaking anthology offers a potent rallying cry and theory of change Harvey Weinstein. Brett Kavanaugh. Jeffrey Epstein. Donald Trump. The most infamous abusers in modern American history are being outed as women speak up to publicly expose behavior that was previously only whispered about -- and it's both making an impact, and sparking a backlash. From the leading, agenda-setting feminist editors of Yes Means Yes, Believe Me brings readers into the evolving landscape of the movement against sexual violence, and outlines how trusting women is the critical foundation for future progress. In Believe Me, contributors ask and answer the crucial question: What would happen if we didn't just believe women, but acted as though they matter? If we take women's experiences of online harassment seriously, it will transform the internet. If we listen to and center survivors, we could revolutionize our systems of justice. If we believe Black women when they talk about pain, we will save countless lives. With contributions from many of the most important voices in feminism today, Believe Me is an essential roadmap for the #MeToo era and beyond.

Book excerpt: 2022 Bronze Living Now Book Award 2022 Foreword INDIES Book of the Year Award Trauma can feel like a labyrinth, twisting on itself like a maze of despair, without end or exit. This seems particularly true in today’s chaotic world of pandemics, climate change, social conflict, and systemic violence. Increasingly, the conditions of the larger world aggravate, if not cause, the traumas in our individual lives. However, as Laura K. Kerr explores in this wide-ranging collection of essays, not only can we heal from trauma, but we can use it as an opportunity for growth and transformation, changing ourselves and the world for the better. Drawing from her experiences as researcher, trauma survivor, and psychotherapist, she examines various causes of trauma, details how to understand and treat trauma’s effects, and explores the role society plays in activating traumatic defenses. Despite the weightiness of the topic, Dr. Kerr brings hope for lasting, positive change. As Dr. Kerr shows, the key lies in removing rigid divides, like those between wounded and healer, self and society. When they are integrated, healing becomes transformative and enduring—not only for ourselves but for the increasingly traumatized world in which we live.

Book excerpt: A landmark book published to rave reviews a decade ago, Pearl Harbor Ghosts has now been updated to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the surprise attack that forever changed the course of history. Full of gripping drama and vibrant details, here is the intimate human story of the events surrounding that fateful day of December 7, 1941–the glamorous tropical city that seemed too beautiful to suffer devastation . . . the stunned naval personnel whose lives would permanently be divided into before and after Pearl Harbor . . . the ordinary Honolulu residents who were tragically unprepared to be the first target in the Pacific war . . . the Japanese pilots who manned the squadron of deadly silver bombers . . . and the island’s community of Japanese-Americans whose lives would never be the same again. Blending meticulous historic recreation with lively reporting, Clarke counterpoints the freeze-frame nightmare of the 1941 bombing with the disturbing realities of present-day Honolulu, where hundreds of veterans, both American and Japanese, converge each year to relive every hour of the attack. Wealthy Waikiki landowners and native Hawaiian farmers, admirals and nurses, Navy wives and government officials–all take their part in Clarke’s rich tapestry of memory and insight. In the end, Pearl Harbor emerges as a trauma that spread from Oahu to engulf the nation and the world–an event that continues to reverberate in the lives of all who experienced it.

We wish we could have avoided many of these stories, because they traumatized us mentally by occupying that small part of our mind where memories dwell. They became part of our subcouncious, and they are so unforgettable that they come forth from that part of our brain when we are in places and situations that we feel are dangerous. Have you ever been in a wooded area, and you imagined a ghostly presence present just because you read or heard a story at some time? Horror stories can be compelling and unforgettable, and that is what this book aims at accomplishing. These horror stories were designed to transport you to places and introduce you to characters that you will dislike and fear, but like those stories that consumed our memories, these stories will stick with you forever. Memories of horror stories have a way of playing tricks with our minds, and the stories in this book are no different.

Book excerpt: A forlorn English diplomat. A forgotten yet legitimate daughter. A stuffy society intent on keeping outsiders out. Steeped in the new wave of romanticism in the late 18th century, ‘Evelina’ tells the beloved story of a young lady’s entrance into the world. Evelina must learn to navigate the layers of 18th-century England. And although she has all the desirable traits of a young woman, being cast a ‘nobody’ by Mr. Lovel is sure to tarnish her shine. A marriage is required of her. And fast. Can she secure a suitable bachelor? During a time when society was less than kind to the wants of women, Frances Burney’s ‘Evelina’ remains a much-loved eighteenth-century novel. Sweeping readers off their feet for nearly 200 years, ‘Evelina’ is ideal for fans of Netflix’s ‘Bridgerton’ and Keira Knightly’s ‘Pride and Prejudice’. Frances Burney (1752-1840) was an English satirical novelist, diarist and playwright. Her work spans the hugely popular ‘Evelina’ and ‘Camilla’, both which remain much loved eighteenth-century classics today. Mistress of the robes to Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, George III’s Queen, Burney married a French exile, leaving her stranded in France for much of her career. She is thought to have foreshadowed the likes of Jane Austen and William Makepeace Thickery.
