Book excerpt: In Dear Jeff: A Mother’s Reflections and Responses Throughout a Family Tragedy, Carmen Westberg shares the heartbreaking story of her son, Jeff, who received a traumatic brain injury (TBI) in a farming accident at the age of 14. The story, told through a series of letters she writes to him, begins just before the accident occurs and follows their family’s journey from the ICU forward. As Carmen comes to understand that Jeff’s life has changed forever and learns to navigate both the internal and external challenges that accompany his condition, she shares her reactions and emotions, memories of her upbringing, and the continuing history of her family. She finds a way to communicate with a son whose personality and capabilities have transformed in an instant, providing a window into a grieving mother’s mind and heart. Dear Jeff is not only the story of a family’s perseverance in the face of TBI but also a comfort for anyone facing a similar tragedy—especially mothers. Carmen’s letters show that feeling confused and overwrought in the midst of a painful journey is normal. She offers the perspective and experience that families may need when their worlds are upended by trauma . . . and she reassures them that they are not alone.

Book excerpt: The temple surprised me the first time I went. I’d just completed taking a temple prep course too, so I wondered, feeling a little betrayed, “Why didn’t they talk about any of this stuff?” It was like people were so scared of profaning something sacred that they weren’t willing to actually discuss this central point of the restored gospel. My confusion caused me to buckle down and study the temple like crazy—I really wanted to understand. My goal in this book, Jeff, is to teach you what I’ve learned. It’s a letter from your big brother, based on quotes from both the brethren and the scriptures. I’ve aimed to be as candid as possible, and I think it’s one of the most straightforward temple guides you’ll find.

Book excerpt: An “engaging and informative” history of one of capitalism’s longest-running tensions—the high-stakes battles between management and shareholders (The New Yorker). Recent disputes between shareholders and major corporations, including Apple and DuPont, have made headlines. But the struggle between management and those who own stock has been going on for nearly a century. Mixing never-before-published and rare, original letters from Wall Street icons—including Benjamin Graham, Warren Buffett, Ross Perot, Carl Icahn, and Daniel Loeb—with masterful scholarship and professional insight, Dear Chairman traces the rise in shareholder activism from the 1920s to today, and provides an invaluable and unprecedented perspective on what it means to be a public company, including how they work and who is really in control. Jeff Gramm analyzes different eras and pivotal boardroom battles, using the letters to show how investors interact with directors and managers, how they think about their target companies, and how they plan to profit. Each is a fascinating example of capitalism at work told through the voices of its most colorful, influential participants. A hedge fund manager and adjunct professor at Columbia Business School, Gramm has seen public companies that are poorly run, and some that willfully disenfranchise their shareholders. While he pays tribute to the ingenuity of public company investors, Gramm also exposes examples of shareholder activism at its very worst, when hedge funds engineer stealthy land-grabs at the expense of a company’s long-term prospects. Ultimately, he provides a thorough, much-needed understanding of the public company/shareholder relationship for investors, managers, and everyone concerned with the future of capitalism. “An illuminating read for those wondering what drives activists.” —The Wall Street Journal “An excellent read . . . Gramm has collected a series of deliciously rich letters, many of which were never before published.” —The New York Times “The story of the rise of shareholder activism has never been told as compellingly . . . a book that dissects the dramatic deals and brings to life the unbelievable characters of the past hundred years.” —Arthur Levitt, former chairman, US Securities and Exchange Commission

Book excerpt: Equal parts mail art, data visualization, and affectionate correspondence, Dear Data celebrates "the infinitesimal, incomplete, imperfect, yet exquisitely human details of life," in the words of Maria Popova (Brain Pickings), who introduces this charming and graphically powerful book. For one year, Giorgia Lupi, an Italian living in New York, and Stefanie Posavec, an American in London, mapped the particulars of their daily lives as a series of hand-drawn postcards they exchanged via mail weekly—small portraits as full of emotion as they are data, both mundane and magical. Dear Data reproduces in pinpoint detail the full year's set of cards, front and back, providing a remarkable portrait of two artists connected by their attention to the details of their lives—including complaints, distractions, phone addictions, physical contact, and desires. These details illuminate the lives of two remarkable young women and also inspire us to map our own lives, including specific suggestions on what data to draw and how. A captivating and unique book for designers, artists, correspondents, friends, and lovers everywhere.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The publication of Volumes III and IV of Shelley and His Circle under the editorial auspices of Kenneth Neill Cameron makes available a further portion of the Shelley manuscript materials in the Carl H. Pforzheimer Library. These two volumes continue in the format and style of Volumes I and II, which received the critical acclaim of, among others, John Ciardi, who lauded Cameron and his contributing editors for rescuing "the material from felonious footnotery primarily by enclosing it in a continuous narrative that contains detailed introductions to each of the characters of the circle, and a general background of their relationships and of the times." Volumes III and IV progress chronologically through Shelley's life, beginning with the early years of Shelley's marriage to Harriet Westbrook, where Volume II ended, and concluding with her suicide. Among the manuscripts are twelve letters and literary pieces by Byron including the first of his "separation" poem "Fare Thee Well," the expanded 1814 journal of Claire Clairmont, the curious triangular correspondence of Shelley, Mary Godwin, and Thomas Jefferson Hogg, Shelley's annotated copy of Queen Mab, and the suicide letter Harriet Shelley wrote a few hours before she drowned in the Serpentine. A number of maps especially prepared for this edition and other supplementary illustrations enhance the impeccable scholarship of these volumes which, with the projected publication of the remaining materials, will present a half century of interconnected biographies and will suggest the literary and intellectual tenor of the Romantic era. The Pforzheimer collection, exceeded only by that at the Bodleian in the number of Shelley and Shelleyana manuscripts, reflects the personal interests of Carl H. Pforzheimer, who put together one of the notable private libraries of modern times. Before his death in 1957, he planned the form of publication for his collection, designing it not only for the academic use of scholars but also as a stimulating and readable set for the enthusiastic layman.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In March 1888 Horace Traubel, Whitman's loyal and hardworking assistant, began to record his almost daily conversations with the most famous resident of Camden. The result: more than 1,900,000 words that were eventually published between 1906 and 1996 in nine volumes. Titled With Walt Whitman in Camden, these volumes contain much that is mundane and repetitive, but they also include many passages crucial for a full and humane understanding of America's first great national poet. In Intimate with Walt Gary Schmidgall has condensed Traubel's nearly 5,000 pages into one manageable volume featuring the many self-revealing, humorous, nostalgic, and often curmudgeonly words of the Good Gray Poet. The book is divided into five sections, each consisting of several chapters: the first, presenting Walt on himself, his family, and his daily life and visitors at the only home he ever owned; the second, on his artistic credos, the literary life, and a large array of comments on the writing, publication of, and critical reaction to Leaves of Grass; the third, focusing on his friends, admirers, idols, and lovers; the fourth and longest, presenting his no-holds-barred views on a variety of topics, including the American scene, race, religion, music, and even alcohol; and finally, a gathering of passages revealing Whitman's struggles with his infirmities, his poignant final days, and Traubel's observations on Whitman's deathbed scene and burial rites. Whitman was the great poet of autobiography, and with this volume we gain entry into a most remarkable life in his own words. Whimsical and highly entertaining, poignant and moving, illuminating and candid, Intimate with Walt makes accessible the most amazing oral history project in all of American letters.
