Book excerpt: Bill Iver didn't expect anything more than hard work when he offered to help his daughter and son-in-law restore their rented historic South Carolina home, but then he sees two boys in the attic--and his hand passes through one of them. Bill has always believed that being absent from the body meant being present with the Lord, but if that is true, what did he see? And why does the boy dressed in 19th century clothing look familiar while the second boy, dressed in jeans and sweatshirt, look like the missing grandson of the house's owner? What is the connection between the two boys--and Bill? Hesitant to share his experience with his pastor, but consumed with the need to understand, Bill seeks a worldly explanation which leads him down a trail of decisions that are deadly to body and soul. Through the mire, he must undo the consequences of his choices, discover what his visions mean, and uncover an age-old mystery that will bring closure and reconciliation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1976, the US Supreme Court ruled in Gregg v. Georgia that the death penalty was constitutional if it complied with certain specific provisions designed to ensure that it was reserved for the 'worst of the worst.' The same court had rejected the death penalty just four years before in the Furman decision because it found that the penalty had been applied in a capricious and arbitrary manner. The 1976 decision ushered in the 'modern' period of the US death penalty, setting the country on a course to execute over 1,400 inmates in the ensuing years, with over 8,000 individuals currently sentenced to die. Now, forty years after the decision, the eminent political scientist Frank Baumgartner along with a team of younger scholars (Marty Davidson, Kaneesha Johnson, Arvind Krishnamurthy, and Colin Wilson) have collaborated to assess the empirical record and provide a definitive account of how the death penalty has been implemented. Each chapter addresses a precise empirical question and provides evidence, not opinion, about whether how the modern death penalty has functioned. They decided to write the book after Justice Breyer issued a dissent in a 2015 death penalty case in which he asked for a full briefing on the constitutionality of the death penalty. In particular, they assess the extent to which the modern death penalty has met the aspirations of Gregg or continues to suffer from the flaws that caused its rejection in Furman. To answer this question, they provide the most comprehensive statistical account yet of the workings of the capital punishment system. Authoritative and pithy, the book is intended for both students in a wide variety of fields, researchers studying the topic, and--not least--the Supreme Court itself.

Book excerpt: Something is subject to luck if it is beyond our control. In this book, Haji shows that luck detrimentally affects both moral obligation and moral responsibility. He argues that factors influencing the way we are, together with considerations that link motivation and ability to perform intentional actions, frequently preclude our being able to do otherwise. Since obligation requires that we can do otherwise, luck compromises the range of what is morally obligatory for us. This result, together with principles that conjoin responsibility and obligation, is then exploited to derive the further skeptical conclusion that behavior for which we are morally responsible is limited as well. Throughout these explorations, Haji makes extensive use of concrete cases to test the limits of how we should understand free will moral responsibility, blameworthiness, determinism, and luck itself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sound Of Fear follows a pathway of the unthinkable. Is life as we know it truly a myth of hopeful expectation? The book, spread over a decade of time, entrances you with the love of a couple and their love of family, entwines you around the mysteries of the subconscious mind, enthralls you with depths of fear ignited by often heart-rendering episodes and embraces your simple need for pulling the bed covers over your eyes! Weak, strong, dirty, and heroic characters help you relate to human frailties. Inconceivable terror strikes you at times to find your core’s fear triggers. Take a deep breath as necessary! The simple fact is fear manifests deeply in all humans. Some hide the emotion with intrinsic capabilities of denial. Others blink and run on impulse! The storyline drifts around an alien tone. Subtle at times, you feel compelled to understand any life-form’s survival needs. But, the brutality of reality puts you back on the “home Team”, routing for the survival of the fittest! The Sound Of Fear experience finds you reminiscing those times when you looked into the wind-blown bushes at dusk to see the imaginary shadows or when you thought twice about going into the dark open waters of that expansive pond, lake or ocean. The book’s simple text finds you remembering the possibilities of how and why people cold be placed in situations just like one’s you’d heard about or had experienced. Within the chapters, you will relate to the characters’ sometimes reckless, sometimes concise, sometimes giddy, sometimes compassionate decisions or emotions. The book is purposefully designed to make you feel like you know what’s going to happen next…it at least gives you that “feeling” of control…or does it? Let your fear be your guide!
