Book excerpt: Some days you are your worst enemy Dead Reflection (Book Two of the Replicant Trilogy) Book Two: Dead Reflection Tank catches a wave with a Replicant to another version of Earth. It's sort of like his own planet, but with a few critical differences. The Navigator tech created by Dunk is being used to kill civilians, meaning the Navigators are a lethal enemy of the people. Once again, Tank fights his way across his homeland, but this time he's headed to Washington, DC. He has a bone to pick with the President. ***************************** (Available Now) Ghost Born (Book One of the Replicant series) The tech was genius, with armor, hydraulics and advanced vision. Tank could have saved a lot of lives with it in the suck. Instead he had left the army to take care of his late wife and joined a mad research team called CaliTech hiding deep in Sequoia National Park. He was testing the gear with his squad, Lexie and Ark, when everything went badly wrong. Replicants intent on murdering their twins dropped from the sky like a reverse Rapture. If that wasn't bad enough, more people randomly turned into homicidal maniacs, making it impossible to pick the good guys from the bad. A once ordered world collapsed in to chaos almost overnight, catching Tank and Lexie well outside the wire. They were making their way through the death zone from Albuquerque to CaliTech, but the boss has other ideas. Dunk might be mad as they make 'em, but at the end of days and crazy is all they've got. (Available Now) Lost Origin (Book Three: of the Replicant series) The only way is forward and Tank heads out to find himself caught in Hecate's web. His namesake, First Tank, is on the hunt for his son, while Isaiah is determined to become the ruling triumvirate on Hecate's Earth. Our three Tanks are on a collision course that will change the direction of the Universe. There is never a dull moment, or a sane enemy, in Tanner's collection. Happy alien hunting! ***************************** Also by SD Tanner Books in Navigator World Navigator Boxset (Books 1-4) Bombardier Trilogy WarriorSR Trilogy Replicant Trilogy Books in Dead Force series Dead Force: Books 1-3 Dead Force: Books 4-7 The Hunter Wars series Books in Hunter Wars Hunter Wars Boxset (Books 1-3) Hunter Wars Boxset (Books 4-6) Books in Eden Lost Trilogy Eden Lost Trilogy Standalone Books Time to Die Twisted Daze

Book excerpt: Entertaining Comics Group (EC Comics) is perhaps best-known today for lurid horror comics like Tales from the Crypt and for a publication that long outlived the company’s other titles, Mad magazine. But during its heyday in the early 1950s, EC was also an early innovator in another genre of comics: the so-called “preachies,” socially conscious stories that boldly challenged the conservatism and conformity of Eisenhower-era America. EC Comics examines a selection of these works—sensationally-titled comics such as “Hate!,” “The Guilty!,” and “Judgment Day!”—and explores how they grappled with the civil rights struggle, antisemitism, and other forms of prejudice in America. Putting these socially aware stories into conversation with EC’s better-known horror stories, Qiana Whitted discovers surprising similarities between their narrative, aesthetic, and marketing strategies. She also recounts the controversy that these stories inspired and the central role they played in congressional hearings about offensive content in comics. The first serious critical study of EC’s social issues comics, this book will give readers a greater appreciation of their legacy. They not only served to inspire future comics creators, but also introduced a generation of young readers to provocative ideas and progressive ideals that pointed the way to a better America.

Book excerpt: He who said "I AM THE LIGHT" embraced the utmost darkness of humanity; He who claimed "I AM THE TRUTH" stood accused; He who announced "I AM THE LIVING WATER" became thirsty; He who proclaimed "I AM THE RESURRECTION" entered death; He who promised "I WILL PREPARE A PLACE FOR YOU" was buried in a tomb; And he calls us to leave everything behind and follow him? Dr. Philip Yeung leads us in a moving and radical journey of Jesus during the Holy Week, from the darkest hour at the hands of the betrayer to the brightest dawn at the empty tomb, and examines how unexpected details highlighted by the Gospel authors open our eyes to the unimaginable depth and length of God's love for us.

Book excerpt: An updated view or summary of sociology in regards to our present human social direction, and how Statecraft evolution and Polity is impacting our social progress. This book attempts in a brief and simplistic way to map our social and political direction using history, and to understand human nature by studying the choice of direction taken thus far. Whether by varying levels of ignorance, indifference, love, concern, determination or greed, activity or inactivity, humanity will inevitably reveal its future strengths and weaknesses by the course of its own actions. This book attempts to discuss and ask why we still exhibit the same existing antiquated problems in modern day society despite our lessons from history and the many directions of political evolution experienced. These problems are now compounded with our new social values and runaway technical evolution which now heightens our perilous position in the 21 century, resulting with the deficiencies in our domestic and foreign policies and our rapidly changing ecology. Perhaps another appropriate title for this manuscript would be "the power and nature of human greed". Finally the author attempts to describe the possible remedies from a simple citizen's point of view and in terms that would hopefully be understandable to other simple citizens, in a great country where simple citizens are supposed to be the active part of a people's government. A people's government that is supposed to Reflect the many rights and regulations of the Constitution of the United States of America.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hilary Kornblith presents a new account of reflection, and its importance for knowledge, reasoning, freedom, and normativity. Philosophers have frequently extolled the value of reflective self-examination, and a wide range of philosophers, who differ on many other things, have argued that reflection can help to solve a number of significant philosophical problems. The importance of reflecting on one's beliefs and desires has been viewed as the key to solving problems about justification and knowledge; about reasoning; about the nature of freedom; and about the source of normativity. In each case, a problem is identified which reflective self-examination is thought to address. Kornblith argues that reflection cannot solve any of these problems. There is a common structure to these issues, and the problems which reflection is thought to resolve are ones which could not possibly be solved by reflecting on one's beliefs and desires. More than this, he suggests that the attempt to solve these problems by appealing to reflection saddles us with a mystical view of the powers of reflective self-examination. Recognition of this fact motivates a search for a demystified view of the nature of reflection. To this end, Kornblith offers a detailed examination of views about knowledge, reasoning, freedom, and normativity in order to better understand the motivations for extolling self-reflective examination. He explores both the logic of these views, and the psychological commitments they involve. In the final chapter, he offers a more realistic view of reflection, which draws on dual process approaches to cognition.

Book excerpt: Sixteen-year-old Nathan Shepherd has a great life traveling where the careers of his father, an investigator, and mother, a renowned violinist, take him ... until his parents are found murdered. Left with only a mirror and notes from his father's last case, Nathan goes into hiding at the remote country home of Tony, his father's college buddy, and Tony's teenage daughter, Kelly. The mysterious mirror must be a clue to what happened to his parents, and when images appear in it---people and things that don't exist---Nathan and Kelly painstakingly gather evidence. But the killers want the mirror too, and danger threatens the teens at every turn. As it becomes evident that Nathan's father had stumbled upon dark forces at work in the world, several questions arise. Could it be that the mirror is a portal to a parallel world? Could this technology be used for evil purposes? And could his parents still be alive, trapped in another dimension? Nathan and Kelly struggle to solve the mystery before they too become victims. This chilling, hair-raising adventure is jam-packed with action in a fantastical world where nothing is as it seems, and even mirrors tell lies.

Book excerpt: Looking at the cultural responses to death and dying, this collection explores the emotional aspects that death provokes in humans, whether it is disgust, fear, awe, sadness, anger, or even joy. Whereas most studies of death and dying treat the subject from an objective viewpoint, the scholars in this collection recognize their inherent connection with death which allows for a new and more personal form of study. More broadly, this collection suggests a new paradigm in the study of death and dying.

Book excerpt: Spooky Technology explores our understanding of the invisible technologies in our everyday lives, from objects with ‘intelligence’ to systems in our homes that talk to us (and each other). The book is an inventory of spooky technologies, compiled by Carnegie Mellon students reviewing work across art, design, HCI, psychology, human factors research, and other fields, that has been done in this field, or adjacent to it, both historically and more recently, with commentary, essays, and interviews with creators and artists. We often hear that the technologies in our everyday lives would appear to be ‘magic’ and potentially terrifying to people in the past—instantaneous communication with people all over the world, access to a vast, ever-growing resource of human knowledge right there in the palm of our hand, objects with ‘intelligence’ that can sense and talk to us (and each other). But rarely are these ‘otherworldly’ dimensions of technologies explored in more detail. There is an often unspoken presumption that the march of progress will inevitably mean we all adopt new practices, and incorporate new products and new ways of doing things into our lives—all cities will become smart cities; all homes will become smart homes. But these systems have become omnipresent without our necessarily understanding them. They are not just black boxes, but invisible: entities in our homes and everyday lives which work through hidden flows of data, unknown agendas, imaginary clouds, mysterious sets of rules which we perhaps dismiss as ‘algorithms’ or even ‘AI’ without really understanding what that means. On some level, the superstitions and sense of wonder, and ways of relating to the unknown and the supernatural (deities, spirits, ghosts) which humanity has felt in every culture throughout history have not gone away, but started to become transferred and transmuted into new forms.
