Book excerpt: In 1981 ten men starved themselves to death inside the walls of Long Kesh prison in Belfast. While a stunned world watched and distraught family members kept bedside vigils, one "soldier" after another slowly went to his death in an attempt to make Margaret Thatcher's government recognize them as political prisoners rather than common criminals. Drawing extensively on secret IRA documents and letters from the prisoners smuggled out at the time, David Beresford tells the gripping story of these strikers and their devotion to the cause. An intensely human story, Ten Men Dead offers a searing portrait of strife-torn Ireland, of the IRA, and the passions -- on both sides -- that Republicanism arouses.

Book excerpt: An epidemic that's turning humans into zombie-like creatures has swept over the eastern United States and quite possibly the world, and Flex Sheridan doesn't like it one bit. In an effort to save his younger sister, Flex re-connects with perhaps the strongest woman he knows - Gem Cardoza, his former girlfriend. Together they take his six-year-old niece Trina, the only uninfected survivor of hi...s sister's famiy, and his infected sister Jamie, and make a run from central Florida back to his isolated home in Lula, Georgia. As they head north, they encounter another uninfected, Hemphill "Hemp" Chatsworth. A naturalized U.S. citizen, Hemp is British, and extremely smart. He holds a degree in Epidemiology and Mechanical Engineering, both of which this group will need. Along with the crossbow-wielding Charlene "Charlie" Sanders and a pregnant Great Pyrenees dog, this small group uses street smarts, book smarts, and technology to defend against the new "Abnormals" that walk the earth. But Hemp is also compelled to learn how they got this way, and if possible, how to reverse the condition and save Flex's sister. So grab your machine gun and take a ride in their fortified vehicles and mobile lab; you're going to want these people on your side when the Dead Hunger . . . Book excerpt: Lula, Georgia in the year 2030. It's a nice place, post-apocalypse. It's Flex's former home, and he and Gem - many years older than when the apocalypse first came crashing down on them - have settled back into their former digs after leaving Kingman, Kansas behind. They had important reasons for going to Kansas, but it turns out they had an even better reason to leave. To come home. They missed Lula and the first place they shared together. They vowed to teach their adopted son Colton how to be as strong as Trina and Taylor, and their late son, Flex Jr. Since the zombie hordes fell dead in the streets, consigning the land to the living once more, people began migrating back to communities like Lula. The small towns were where life's burdens could be shared. Familiar establishments like Three Sisters Bar opened again, and citizens bartered for goods and services with neighboring towns. It was almost like real life again. But good things always seem to crumble under the weight of so much happiness. When Max and Isis begin getting the old psychic twinges that draw them southward, they investigate, discovering the citizens of Athens, Georgia know something they haven't shared with others. Unfortunately, their secret could kill everyone. The Mothers have returned, and they have created a massive new horde of Hungerers. Only this time, they're different. Dangerously so.Why not join our old friends Flex, Gem, Hemp, Charlie, Max, Isis, Rachel, Nelson, Dave, Serena, Trina, Taylor, Doc Scofield and the rest of the badass family of survivors as they face down the remnants? It's bound to be a good, zombie killin' time.

Book excerpt: Taking a hard, penetrating look at the despondent heart of darkness of the 1990s, The Death Proclamation of Generation X is a probing chronicle of America's thirteenth generation caught between the idealistic Baby Boomers and the well-financed Generation Y. Generation X was scapegoated and dismissed without the chance to prove themselves. Blending tenets of psychology, sociology, and cultural anthropology, author Maxim Furek offers a unique perspective to the post-modernist discourse by exploring the impact that personalities such as Andrew Wood, Kurt Cobain, Layne Staley, River Phoenix, Marilyn Manson, and Anna Nicole Smith left on that generation. Evaluating the psychological and sociological variables of goth, grunge, and heroin, Furek weaves a dark tapestry of this unique demographic group born between 1965 and 1978. The Death Proclamation of Generation X pieces together the complexities of Generation X to acknowledge their individuality, honor their existence, and to celebrate their future. They are a group with their own identity of music, attitude, and culture. The resilience of Generation X is but another example of the power of this special collection of people-a group of highly skilled and adaptive individuals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present book is the result of ten years work on the subject of historical development of Indian mythology and its connection with parallel historical development of Indian mythology and its connection with parallel mythologies elsewhere, on which no satisfactory work exists in English. In the first part the Vedic-Brahmanical and epic-puranic components of Siva, Varuna, Yama, Nirrti, Agni, Kala, the mother goddess, Karttikeya, Ganapati, Kama and Pusan are treated. Part II studies the rise of Visnu. The component gods-the Vedic solar gods Savitr, Surya, Vivasvat, Mitra, Aryaman, Bhaga, Amsa, Daksa, Martanda, Indra, and Visnu together with the epic-Puranic incarnations of Visnu (with their Vedic precursors) are analysed. With Brahman (Part III) the picture is different. In the Vedic-Brahmanical gods-Brhaspati, Brahmanaspati, Prajapati, Pitamaha and Brahman-we do not get a very tangible figure, far less that of a sectarian god. These merge into the Brahman, Prajapati or Pitamaha of the epic-Puranic literature, but fail to answer to the definition of a sectarian god, so that no cult grows around the resultant image. In Part IV the general characteristics of the Puranic pantheon are analysed. Here, on the one hand, there are innumerable regional, functional divinities, tutelary gods and goddesses, village-or disease-gods, and also gods for different occasions in life, while on the other hand there is the lofty Triad, which thanks to the predominance of philosophy, is frequently stated to be three facets of the same supreme being.

Book excerpt: Demons play tricks. This fact has been pounded into eight-year-old Zevadiah Stoll’s head. When he’s tasked with his first solo hunt, he knows to be wary. He’ll either emerge victorious, or he’ll die. But his target isn’t clear. Zevadiah thinks the wolfish boy he discovers is a victim. He refuses to heed the signs: the boy’s feral nature, the cut on his cheek that heals before Zevadiah’s eyes. Zevadiah simply doesn’t want to kill the boy, and he doesn’t. That decision changes his life forever. Zevadiah isn’t the hunter he’s supposed to be, and memories of the boy haunt him fifteen years later. Their next meeting is inevitable. Zevadiah intends to free himself by whatever means necessary, but Fate has a different plan. — Hunter x Wolf is a gay (MM) paranormal romance with spice and that urban fantasy flair. Zevadiah is a human and a hunter with an ironically kind heart. Kenji is a fun-loving wolf shifter who’s sure to make you smile. And, of course, they’re Soulmates. If you like your romance built on top of a world of magic and a healthy helping of action, you’re in the right place. Intended for readers 18+. — ABOUT THE SERIES Fate has been compromised. Soulmates are supposed to meet when and how Fate commands. However, the world of Trinity is broken. Some Soulmates are still on course, but others have been cut off. The Matchmaker Witch’s mission is to bring as many lost Soulmates together as possible and therefore fix Fate before the world is destroyed. While By the Matchmaker Witch is a series, each book works as a standalone and will have either an HFN or HEA. However, some subplots may be ongoing. It would be best to read this series in order to avoid any spoilers.

Was this hell reality?” Austin Lively is a struggling, disillusioned screenwriter whose life is suddenly changed forever when he opens a door and is unwittingly transported to a fantastical medieval realm. Austin finds himself wielding a bloody dagger while standing over a very beautiful and very dead woman. Bewildered and confused, he is seized by castle guards and thrown in a dungeon. Just when he begins to fear the worst, he is suddenly transported back to reality in LA. Did that really just happened? Has he gone insane? Was it all a dream? Did he have a brain tumor? Desperate for answers, he sets out to find them and discovers that the mystery can only be unlocked by a strange piece of fiction that holds the truth about the magical kingdom. But he isn’t the only person searching for the missing manuscript, and his rivals will stop at nothing to get it first. To complicate matters more, Austin soon discovers that he has no control over when he passes between worlds and finds himself out of trust for even the simple things, like walking through doorways. Stuck between dual realities –charged for a murder he doesn’t recall in one and running from a maniacal billionaire who’s determined to kill him in another– Austin’s monotonous life has become an epic adventure of magic, murder, and political intrigue in both the New Republic of Galiana and the streets of Los Angeles California.
