The more important errors arose chiefly from confounding our poet with the mathematician Gerlandus, who flourished in France in the eleventh century, and who was best known by his treatise on the Compotas, or oomputus. The mistake is, however, the less excusable, as our John de Garlande not unfrequently speaks of himself in his writings, especially in the one now printed for the first time.
