Book excerpt: Packed with exploits in the forest and on the waterways of colonial America, this is the story of Henry de Tonti, French explorer and pioneer of the Mississippi river. His story has been somewhat lost to history, sitting in the shadows of his friend and commandant, the explorer La Salle. But his accomplishments are just as noteworthy, his bravery just as commendable, and his perseverance just as admirable. The best years of de Tonti's life were given to the exploration and navigation of the that great inland waterway. In 1682 he accompanied La Salle on his voyage of discovery to the river's mouth on the Gulf of Mexico. After the death of La Salle, he continued these explorations and later aided Pierre Le Moyne to build Fort Mobile, the first fortified French garrison and settlement on the Gulf. He was also instrumental in founding the first white settlement west of the Mississippi in Arkansas as well as the city of St. Louis, Missouri.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Man With the Iron Hand Let us picture in imagination the history of the Great Valley of the Mississippi as a splendid drama enacted upon a giant stage which reaches from the Alleghanies to the Rockies and from the Great Lakes of the Gulf of Mexico and through which the Father of Waters sweeps majestically. Let us people this stage with real men and women - picturesque red men and no less interesting white men, Indians, Spaniards, Frenchmen, Englishmen, explorers, warriors, priests, voyageurs, coureurs de bois, fur traders, and settlers. Let the scene be set about the lakes, along the rivers, among the hills, on the plains, and in the forests. Then, viewing this pageant of the past, let us write the true tales of the Great Valley as we write romance - with life, action, and color - that the history of our Great Valley may live. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through more than two hundred stunning photographs, The Mississippi Gulf Coast illustrates what visitors and residents alike love about the region--the sunrises and sunsets; the distinctive character of each town along the waterfront; the historic places; the traditional coast cuisine; and the arts, gaming, and watersports. Passing from the western part of the coast to the east, The Mississippi Gulf Coast will refamiliarize some and introduce others to the Coast of Bay St. Louis, Pass Christian, Long Beach, Gulfport, Biloxi, D'Iberville, Ocean Springs, Gautier, Pascagoula, and Moss Point. Through words and images, photographer Timothy T. Isbell provides a brief history of the area, from the first settlers to the waves of immigrants who have helped shape the character and culture of the region, and a reflection of the current state of the Gulf Coast. The Mississippi Gulf Coast has spent more than a decade recovering from the ruin left in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. During the earliest days following the storm, Isbell was sent out to document the grim aftermath of Katrina. Seeing damage everywhere, he became overwhelmed by the destruction surrounding him and soon wanted to see images of hope and recovery. It was at that point he made a promise to show the "true Mississippi Gulf Coast," an area known for its natural beauty and spirit. The beautiful photographs in The Mississippi Gulf Coast are a testament to renewal in the face of adversity.
