Book excerpt: This is an in-depth study of the intellectual, technical, and artistic encounters between Europe and China in the late eighteenth century, focusing on the purposeful acquisition of information and images that characterized a direct engagement with the idea of "China." The central figure in this story is Henri-Léonard Bertin (1720–1792), who served as a minister of state under Louis XV and, briefly, Louis XVI. Both his official position and personal passion for all things Chinese placed him at the center of intersecting networks of like-minded individuals who shared his ideal vision of China as a nation from which France had much to learn. John Finlay examines a fascinating episode in the rich history of cross-cultural exchange between China and Europe in the early modern period, and this book will be an important and timely contribution to a very current discussion about Sino-French cultural relations. This book will be of interest to scholars in art history, visual culture, European and Chinese history.

Her encounter with James Legge combined her professional interests with her interests in Asian history. The challenging events that James Legge experienced across his life in Hong Kong revealed his exceptional linguistic talents and steadfast resilience, her own "peculiar department", as Legge described his interests. As she discovered his rich blend of talent and resilience in a setting of great political and cultural conflict, she wanted more people to know about this outstanding man.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Trade and Administration of China This book is intended to portray the present state of the Chinese Empire, with such record of the past as will show by what process of evolution the existing state has been reached. NO attempt is made to forecast the future, or even to refer to the revolution which, under the name of Reform, has been begun. The development of many centuries is to be recast, and within a year or a generation, according as the pace is forced or not, it will assume an unaccustomed garb; and the China of that future day, near or distant, will not be the China of to-day. Whether this revolution will follow the precedent of the English Revolution or of the French, whether it will proceed by logical development from step to step, or will rush on a headlong course, will depend upon the wisdom and self restraint of the leaders in the government, and in the last resort upon the nature of that public opinion which will be created in the Chinese people. But, just as the history of the England of the Georges cannot be well understood without some knowledge of the Stuart period, and as an acquaintance with the France of the Kingdom and the Empire is necessary to a comprehension of the France of the Third Republic, so also, to understand the China which the student of the future will know, he must be able to study its past. The China Of today is, with minor differences, the China of the past and in this book it is hoped that the future student will find, within the limits of the dozen subjects treated, a succinct account Of the foundation on which the China of the future will be erected. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Costume of China, Illustrated by Sixty Engravings: With Explanations in English and French The very circumscribed limits which are marked out for foreigners at Canton, have rendered the natives of China so completely isolated from the rest of human kind, that only a very superficial acquaintance has been hitherto obtained with the Religion, the Laws, the Manners, or the Arts of a people the most ancient in the discovered world; and it is exceedingly to be regretted, that either habitual caution, ungenerous suspicion, or experienced necessary circumspection, should influence the Chinese, even at the distance of fourteen hundred miles from the capital of their empire, to restrain the observing traveller within this narrow compass. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Colonisation of Indo-China: Translated From the French It is to the colonial methods adopted um der the old form of government that France owed so many magnificent possessions, which, even in the 18th century, made it doubt ful which of the two, she or England, would be the great colonising nation. Unfortunately, this marvellous extent of territory, these in valuable colonists; this wisdom which in spite of all was clearly revealed in the King's Councils; such a wealth of property so dearly bought and so slowly acquired - of all this nothing remains ours at the present time. Territory has crumbled to pieces and traditions have become obscured with the overthrow of the monarchy; finally all was lost in the great upheaval of the latter end of the century, and our departed splendour is only shown by the glory of rivals enriched by our spoils. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chinese Miscellanies: A Collection of Essays and Notes This cordial cc-operation may be traced without difficulty to the generous and wise policy with which Great Britain extended the commercial and other rights, which she acquired by her original and unaided war, to all other nations.2 Having been the first to inaugu rate the freedom and community of trade at home, she followed up that wise policy abroad by the noble and generous (and no less wise) course of fighting and ne gotiating, not for herself only, but for the whole civilized world. It is thus that peace and mutual good offices are perpetuated for half a century between the most powerful nations and that, for just fifty years, England and France, instead of wasting each other's strength only to end where they began, have combined their forces and fought side by side as close allies in all parts of the world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Voyage From France to Cochin-China: In the Ship Henry, Captain Rey, of Bordeaux, in the Years 1819 and 1820 On the 29th fune, letters from court informed me that I was at liberty to remain in the bay of Tourane, or to carry the ship into the river of Hue the capital and that, in either case, every assistance would be afforded to unload her. Ambitious that the Henry should be the first European vessel to enter the port of the capital, we weighed from Tourane at noon, and next mornin at 6 a.h. We dropped our anchor a mile north-east from t e fort, at the entrance of the river Hue. There we found another French ship, the Rose, which had arrived a few days lyf'ore, and had begun to discharge her cargo. Havin saluted the fort, the Fantou or military com mandant, and t e Thoughou or mandarin of justice, visited us ou-board, bringing a present of fresh fish and fruit. Our corresponding present was reserved for another occasion. The captain of the Rose came also on-board the Heur and I could discover that he was not over satisfied with t e pro gress of his affairs with the government: but he had a super cargo in the capital, who alone conducted all the business of the enterprise. My case was different; for I was sole master of my transactions; and being anxious to conduct myself so as not only to promote my own personal interest, but these also of m nation and countrymen in general, in future times, I resolve to commence no mercantile intercourse until I should consult the two French mandarins settled in the countr and in favour at court. From those gentlemen I learned that the difficulties arisen in the business of the Rose related to the value to be given by the government for the fire arms she had brought out. Without presuming to decide on which side the blame lay, I would just recommend to all who go to cochin-chinato provide themselves with a most accu rate and retentive memory, unless their transactions be con ducted by pen and aper.
