Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sir Roger De Coverley Papers The person of next consideration is Sir Andrew Freeport, a merchant of great eminence in the city of London; a person of indefatigable industry, strong reason, and great experience. His notions of trade are noble and generous, and (as every rich man has usually some sly way of jesting, which would make no great figure were he not a rich man) he calls the sea the British Common. He is acquainted with commerce in all its parts, and will tell you that it is a stupid and barbarous way to extend dominion by arms; for true power is to be got by arts and industry. He will often argue, that if this part of our trade were well cultivated, we should gain from one nation; and if another, from another I have heard him prove, that diligence makes more lasting acquisitions than valor, and that sloth has ruined more nations than the sword. He abounds in several frugal maxims, amongst which the greatest favorite is, A penny saved is a penny got. A general trader of good sense is pleasanter company than a general scholar; and Sir Andrew having a natural unaffected eloquence, the perspicuity of his discourse gives the same pleasure that wit would in another man. He has made his fortune himself; and says that England may be richer than other kingdoms, by as plain methods as he himself is richer than other men; though at the same time I can say this of him that there is not a point in the compass but blows home a ship in which he is an owner. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sir Roger De Coverley Papers From "the Spectator" Edited With Introduction and Notes The text as revised by the authors has been followed, except in the matter of spelling and punctuation. Everything relating to Sir Roger that might properly be included has been given, even to brief notices in articles dealing with outside matters. These chance allusions help to make the hero a living character. Henry Morley's edition of the Spectator and the two recent editions by George A. Aitken and by G. Gregory Smith have been frequently consulted. Many of the other books used are referred to in the Note. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sir Roger De Coverley and the Spectator's Club For text I have followed mainly that of Mr. A. Gregory Smith in his new edition of the Spectator, so far as it has been published, modernizing, however, the capitalization and the spelling of the original. Into the last paragraph of No. 383, I have introduced a clever emendation, borrowed from Mr. D. O. S. Lowell, and have occasionally for similar reasons omitted brief phrases in other portions of the essays. With these exceptions, this volume will be found, I hope, a faith ful transcript of the original. Indeed, the last chapter aims to be an exact copy of the text, that the pupil may see for himself what a page looked like two cen turies ago. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Goldsmith's Deserted Village, Cowper's Task, (Book III., The Garden): And the De Coverley Papers (From the Spectator) The eighteenth century, as regards the history of poetry, may be conveniently divided into three periods. The first embraces almost half the century, while the artifi_ cial school of Pope and his admiring imitators bore un disturbed sway within the domain of the Muses; the second is a period of barrenness and transition, during which the sentimental school of Darwin and Hayley spread out in vain their viands of luscious sweets to regale the sated appetites Of their guests, and when a few voices, led by Thomson, Gray, and Collins, were gently heralding in the dawn of a brighter day; in the last, poetry, under the hand Of Cowper, the real, if unconscious, founder of a new school, broke entirely loose from the conventional artificiality of the early part Of the century, and returned in a manner to the Old sources of inspiration, at which had drunk the great masters of English verse - Chaucer, Spenser, and Shakespeare. The Augustan age, a term frequently employed to de note the supremacy of Pope in poetry and Addison in prose, possessed but little that could call forth and de velope a true poetic spirit. Prior to the Revolution, lite rary men had formed a distinct class; but, with the introduction of responsible parliamentary government, it was united with, or rather absorbed into, the political.
