Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From archiving data to CD-ROMs, and from coding theory to image analysis, many facets of computing make use of data compression in one form or another. This is an overview of the many different types of compression, including a taxonomy, an analysis of the most common systems of compression, discussion of their relative benefits and disadvantages, and their most common uses. Readers are presupposed to have a basic understanding of computer science -- essentially the storage of data in bytes and bits and computing terminology -- but otherwise this book is self-contained. It divides neatly into four main parts based on the main branches of data compression: run length encoding, statistical methods, dictionary-based methods, and lossy image compression. All of the most well-known compression techniques are covered including Zip, BinHex, Huffman coding, and GIF.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Visual information is one of the richest and most bandwidth-consuming modes of communication. To meet the requirements of emerging applications, powerful data compression and transmission techniques are required to achieve highly efficient communication, even in the presence of growing communication channels that offer increased bandwidth. Presenting the results of the author’s years of research on visual data compression and transmission, Advances in Visual Data Compression and Communication: Meeting the Requirements of New Applications provides a theoretical and technical basis for advanced research on visual data compression and communication. The book studies the drifting problem in scalable video coding, analyzes the reasons causing the problem, and proposes various solutions to the problem. It explores the author’s Barbell-based lifting coding scheme that has been adopted as common software by MPEG. It also proposes a unified framework for deriving a directional transform from the nondirectional counterpart. The structure of the framework and the statistic distribution of coefficients are similar to those of the nondirectional transforms, which facilitates subsequent entropy coding. Exploring the visual correlation that exists in media, the text extends the current coding framework from different aspects, including advanced image synthesis—from description and reconstruction to organizing correlated images as a pseudo sequence. It explains how to apply compressive sensing to solve the data compression problem during transmission and covers novel research on compressive sensor data gathering, random projection codes, and compressive modulation. For analog and digital transmission technologies, the book develops the pseudo-analog transmission for media and explores cutting-edge research on distributed pseudo-analog transmission, denoising in pseudo-analog transmission, and supporting MIMO. It concludes by considering emerging developments of information theory for future applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of the Lecture Notes in Computer Science series provides a c- prehensive, state-of-the-art survey of recent advances in string processing and information retrieval. It includes invited and research papers presented at the 9th International Symposium on String Processing and Information Retrieval, SPIRE2002, held in Lisbon, Portugal. SPIREhas its origins in the South Am- ican Workshop on String Processing which was ?rst held in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, in 1993. Starting in 1998, the focus of the workshop was broadened to include the area of information retrieval due to its increasing relevance and its inter-relationship with the area of string processing. The call for papers for SPIRE2002 resulted in the submission of 54 papers from researchers around the world. Of these, 19 were selected for inclusion in the program (an acceptance rate of 35%). In addition, the Program Committee decided to accept six other papers, considered as describing interesting ongoing research, in the form of short papers. The authors of these 25 papers came from 18 di?erent countries (Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Czech Republic, Chile, Colombia, Finland, France, Germany, Japan, Italy, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Switzerland, Spain, United Kingdom, and USA).

Book excerpt: This book continues first one of the same authors “Adaptive Image Processing Algorithms for Printing” and presents methods and software solutions for copying and scanning various types of documents by conventional office equipment, offering techniques for correction of distortions and enhancement of scanned documents; techniques for automatic cropping and de-skew; approaches for segmentation of text and picture regions; documents classifiers; approach for vectorization of symbols by approximation of their contour by curves; methods for optimal compression of scanned documents, algorithm for stitching parts of large originals; copy-protection methods by microprinting and embedding of hidden information to hardcopy; algorithmic approach for toner saving. In addition, method for integral printing is considered. Described techniques operate in automatic mode thanks to machine learning or ingenious heuristics. Most the techniques presented have a low computational complexity and memory consumption due to they were designed for firmware of embedded systems or software drivers. The book reflects the authors’ practical experience in algorithm development for industrial R&D.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Owing to the rapid emergence and growth of techniques in the engineering application of fractals, it has become necessary to gather the most recent advances on a regular basis. This book is a continuation of the first volume - published in 1997 - but contains interesting developments. A major point is that mathematics has become more and more involved in the definition and use of fractal models. It seems that the time of the qualitative observation of fractal phenomena has gone. Now the main models are strongly based upon theoretical arguments. Fractals: Theory and Applications in Engineering is a multidisciplinary book which should interest every scientist working in areas connected to fractals.
