Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Culmination and compilation of an amazing 26-month white-tailed deer behavioral study. Includes very plausible conclusion, backed by scrupulously-collected data, about the timing of the rut in Eastern Minnesota's mainly pinewood ecosystem. The study takes place in an approximately 60% softwood two-mile study area, which also includes hay, oats, peas, and corn agricultural fields, and where the soil needs liming for acid neutralization. Areas of more sand versus more silt in the fields cause farmers to plan and adapt according to soil element concentration. Includes 908 Fall 2017 deer movements compared to 892 Fall 2018 "late afternoon-only deer" observed. Study also includes movements of more than 56 bucks observed across three autumns. Astounding conclusions reached as to whether archery season or rifle season is the main time to observe (hunt for) peak-rut behavior-exhibiting antlerless and antlered deer. Diverse habitat which includes mammals such as gray wolf, bear, beaver, and bobcat. Bird life includes raven, bald eagle, waterfowl, at least a dozen sand hill crane, and a tremendous array of songbird and woodpecker species.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During his life, Gene Nunnery was recognized as a master turkey hunter and an artisan who crafted unique, almost irresistible turkey calls. In The Old Pro Turkey Hunter, the vaunted sportsman shares over fifty years of personal experience in Mississippi and surrounding states, along with the decades-old wisdom of the huntsmen who taught him. Throughout the book, his stories make clear that turkey hunting is more than just killing the bird—it is about matching wits with a wild and savvy adversary. As Nunnery explains, “To me that’s what it’s all about: finding a wise old gobbler who will test your skill as a turkey hunter.” Through his stories, Nunnery reveals that the true reward for successful turkey hunting lies in winning the contest, not necessarily exterminating the foe. Real sportsmen know that every now and then the turkey should and will elude the hunter. As Nunnery looks back on his extensive career, he analyzes vast differences in practice, old and new. The shift, he decides, came during his last twenty years on the hunt, and that difference has only increased in the decades since this book was originally published. Michael O. Giles, Bass Pro staff team member, master turkey hunter, and award-winning outdoors writer and author of Passion of the Wild, writes a new foreword that brings the practice of turkey hunting into the present day. Filled with a tested mixture of common sense and specific examples of how master turkey hunters honor their harvest and heritage, The Old Pro Turkey Hunter is the perfect companion for the novice or the adept.

Rather than focus on the much-publicized but short primary rut period, the author divides the mating season into three distinct phases and offers tried-and-true advice specific to each period. Each year the rut is responsible for helping hunters take some of the most mature, large-antlered, wary bucks in the wild. Season after season, these reclusive, almost totally nocturnal trophy-class bucks are vulnerable to hunters who know and understand how to effectively hunt by observing the nuances of all phases of the white-tailed deer's breeding season: the rut. In this book, John Trout, Jr., shares his best-kept secrets on how to consistently tag out on rut-crazed bucks. He shares countless strategies and tips that cover a wide variety of topics, including: A detailed analysis of the pre rut, primary rut, and post rut How to read rubs and scrapes, and figure out which ones are active and which ones aren't How to lure bucks into gun or bow range with scents, calls, and rattling antlers How to hunt cold fronts and moon phases How to set up and hunt tree stands to maximum advantage And much more!

Book excerpt: From prominent outdoorsman and nature writer Mark Kenyon comes an engrossing reflection on the past and future battles over our most revered landscapes--America's public lands. Every American is a public-land owner, inheritor to the largest public-land trust in the world. These vast expanses provide a home to wildlife populations, a vital source of clean air and water, and a haven for recreation. Since its inception, however, America's public land system has been embroiled in controversy--caught in the push and pull between the desire to develop the valuable resources the land holds or conserve them. Alarmed by rising tensions over the use of these lands, hunter, angler, and outdoor enthusiast Mark Kenyon set out to explore the spaces involved in this heated debate, and learn firsthand how they came to be and what their future might hold. Part travelogue and part historical examination, That Wild Country invites readers on an intimate tour of the wondrous wild and public places that are a uniquely profound and endangered part of the American landscape.

Book excerpt: Whitetail Addicts Manual provides whitetail hunters, whether they are novices or experts, with the information they need to understand the biology and behavior of white-tailed deer. This information will enable hunters to understand how deer, especially trophy-class whitetail bucks, act on a seasonal and daily basis and how they react to the daily, changing conditions around them. This book will help hunters know how to locate deer in existing conditions each day and will also arm them with highly successful archery and firearms tactics and techniques for each rut phase. Ultimately the content will successfully provide enthusiasts with the information and skills that will make them more successful hunters regardless of hunting conditions. Written by a nationally recognized big-game expert, the content is based on his more than 20 years of research, studying how trophy whitetails behave in a range of conditions. The content contains several chapters on biology and behavior of North AmericaÆs most popular big-game species and several different tactics and techniques for scouting, observing, locating, patterning, and hunting. All techniques were developed by the author when he was professional hunting guide and outfitter for more than 15 years. Whitetails are the most popular species to hunt in North America and interest continues to grow from both men and woman of all ages. This book is also the complete guide to the species, so it's great for researchers and biologists, as well, in that it is the complete study of the species and its behavior. The knowledge that hunters gain from this book will not only help them be more successful hunters it will help them take more trophy bucks -- the goal of all whitetail addicts. Discusses firearm, muzzleloading and archery techniques.

Book excerpt: The International Symposium on "The Use of Space by Animals and Men," sponsored by the Animal Behavior Society, took place at the 135th Annual Meeting of the AAAS in Dallas, Texas, on December 29-31, 1968. This book presents the text of all papers and edited discus sions, as well as the contributions made by several individuals who were unable ·to attend the Symposium. The idea of holding the Symposium evolved following my presenta tion of a paper to the Animal Behavior Society in 1965 [2] on the use of space by psychiatric patients. Members in attendance at that ses sion, chaired by G. Gottlieb, shared his interest in my compilation of human data presented in a measurable spatial context. This plea sant experience persuaded me that a discussion of space might be shared as a frame of reference which could open avenues of communica tion between behavioral scientists, the design community, and the de cision makers in our society.
