Book excerpt: The cult classic zombie graphic novel: now a Netflix original series! You wake up in the rubble and see a ragged, desperate one-armed man greeting you. He takes you underground to a safe space, feeds you, offers you a place to sleep, and then announces that he’ll take the first watch. It’s not long before the peril of the jagged landscape has located you and your new-found protector and is scratching at the door. What transpires is a moment-to-moment struggle for survival-The Road meets Dawn of the Dead. Daybreak is seen through the eyes of a silent observer as he runs from the shadows of the imminent zombie threat. Brian Ralph slowly builds the tension of the zombies on the periphery, letting the threat-rather than the actual carnage-be the driving force. The post-apocalyptic backdrop features tangles of rocks, lumber, I beams, and overturned cars that are characters in and of themselves. Drawing inspiration from horror movies, television, and first-person shooter video games, Daybreak departs from zombie genre in both content and format, achieving a living-dead masterwork of literary proportions. When released in 2011, Daybreak was a critical success, a YALSA Great Graphic Novel for Teens, and a TLA Maverick Graphic Novel. Now for the first time, Daybreak is being adapted into a Netflix Original series, executive produced by Aron Eli Coleite (Star Trek: Discovery, Heroes), Brad Peyton (Frontier, Rampage), and Jeff Fierson (Frontier, Rampage), starring Matthew Broderick. Read the book before it hits the small screen this fall!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A riveting account of the Saint Bartholomew’s Day Massacre, its origins, and its aftermath, this volume by Barbara B. Diefendorf introduces students to the most notorious episode in France’s sixteenth century civil and religious wars and an event of lasting historical importance. The murder of thousands of French Protestants by Catholics in August 1572 influenced not only the subsequent course of France’s civil wars and state building, but also patterns of international alliance and long-standing cultural values across Europe. The book begins with an introduction that explores the political and religious context for the massacre and traces the course of the massacre and its aftermath. The featured documents offer a rich array of sources on the conflict — including royal edicts, popular songs, polemics, eyewitness accounts, memoirs, paintings, and engravings — to enable students to explore the massacre, the nature of church-state relations, the moral responsibility of secular and religious authorities, and the origins and consequences of religious persecution and intolerance in this period. Useful pedagogic aids include headnotes and gloss notes to the documents, a list of major figures, a chronology of key events, questions for consideration, a selected bibliography, and an index.

Book excerpt: "Cold Blooded: The New Year's Day Massacre" is the compelling true story about Ricky Javon Gray and Ray Dandridge's vicious attack on the Richmond, Virginia, community. In 1959 in a small town in Holcomb Kansas, it was the Clutter family whose brutal deaths caused a national uproar, and accounts of the murder were later chronicled in Truman Capote's book, "In Cold Blood." It was one of America's most haunting crimes of that time. Fast forward to 2006 and the appalling murders of Bryan and Kathryn Harvey and their daughters Stella and Ruby, whose untimely deaths shook up the city of Richmond. Brace yourselves, readers, for the version that never made the news. Lilly Ann Pauley, the woman who made the 911 call that would later put an end to Ricky Gray and Ray Dandridge's vicious murder spree, delivers a gripping account of the 2006 slaying of the Harvey family. In this real-life thriller, she will bring readers face to face with pure evil, and expose for the first time new and shocking information that law enforcement failed to unveil during the course of their investigation. Her story will shake readers out of their seats! Read and see how poorly she was treated by law enforcement after assisting them in breaking one of the biggest murder cases in decades...After years of silence, she finally speaks out!

Book excerpt: Unlike many of the works on the Yugoslav wars written during and just after the crisis, Yugoslavia Unraveled delves beyond 'who did what to whom' to examine underlying issues regarding the sources of religious nationalism and inter-ethnic conflict, the territorial integrity and sovereignty of states, and the principle of self-determination and the right of secession from an existing state. This volume raises essential questions pertaining to the legality and morality of military intervention by external powers without U.N. sanction, and to nation-building by outside powers in war-devastated territories. The book also explores the nature of media propaganda in times of war. Editor Raju G. C. Thomas and the prominent contributors provide fresh views and alternative explanations for the unraveling of a sovereign independent state following the end of the Cold War and in a world without countervailing power.
