They're the stuff of legend, the subject of novels and movies, but their biggest asset is anonymity. They have life spans with no limit and powers beyond imagination. Feared and hated, they are what we call vampires -- drinkers of blood, predators of humans -- creatures of the night world. Dawn of the Blood Moon is the story of one vampire's desire to escape the living hell that is the existence of the undead. Confronted unexpectedly with an ancient enemy, the vampire sees an end to its interminable torture and plunges ahead to what it sees as its death. What happens from that moment forward takes the vampire in a direction undreamed of and totally unexpected. For this one vampire, the journey takes it from the realm of the night into the Dawn of the Blood Moon.

Encyclopedia of the Vampire: The Living Dead in Myth, Legend, and Popular Culture is a comprehensive encyclopedia relating to all phases of vampirism—in literature, film, and television; in folklore; and in world culture. Although previous encyclopedias have attempted to chart this terrain, no prior work contains the depth of information, the breadth of scope, and the up-to-date coverage of this volume. With contributions from many leading critics of horror and supernatural literature and media, the encyclopedia offers entries on leading authors of vampire literature (Bram Stoker, Anne Rice, Stephenie Meyer), on important individual literary works (Dracula and Interview with the Vampire), on celebrated vampire films (the many different adaptations of Dracula, the Twilight series, Love at First Bite), and on television shows (Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel). It also covers other significant topics pertaining to vampires, such as vampires in world folklore, humorous vampire films, and vampire lifestyle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the last three hundred years, fictions of the vampire have fed off anxieties about cultural continuity. Though commonly represented as a parasitic aggressor from without, the vampire is in fact a native of Europe, and its "metamorphoses," to quote Baudelaire, a distorted image of social transformation. Because the vampire grows strong whenever and wherever traditions weaken, its representations have multiplied with every political, economic, and technological revolution from the eighteenth century on. Today, in the age of globalization, vampire fictions are more virulent than ever, and the monster enjoys hunting grounds as vast as the international market. Metamorphoses of the Vampire explains why representations of vampirism began in the eighteenth century, flourished in the nineteenth, and came to eclipse nearly all other forms of monstrosity in the early twentieth century. Many of the works by French and German authors discussed here have never been presented to students and scholars in the English-speaking world. While there are many excellent studies that examine Victorian vampires, the undead in cinema, contemporary vampire fictions, and the vampire in folklore, until now no work has attempted to account for the unifying logic that underlies the vampire's many and often apparently contradictory forms. Erik Butler holds a PhD from Yale University and has taught at Emory University and Swarthmore College. His publications include The Bellum Gramaticale and the Rise of European Literature (2010) and a translation with commentary of Regrowth (Vidervuks) by the Soviet Jewish author Der Nister (2011).

However, if you are one of the many who are new to our existence - the undead as it were - and you do not fully understand what has happened to you or how to proceed, assistance is at hand. For the recently transformed, this guide can help you understand how your body has been changed by the transformation and what to expect surviving as one of our kind. For the traditional vampire, you may learn new ways to survive. This guide provides solutions to the problem with sunlight while explaining that blood is not all we must consume for our survival. It may also help you - and possibly others of our kind - to learn and adapt to modern times while providing sufficient explanation as to who we are and, perhaps more importantly, what we are not. With this guide in hand, you will be well prepared to enter the realm of the Modern Vampire.
