Todd Martin celebrated in Birmingham and then ended up dizzy and disillusioned one round later in the steamy heat of Boston. Partrick Rafter, the man who beat him in the decisive match, rode the shoulders of his teammates after his decisive victory and then missed the rest of the campaign because of an injury to one of his own shoulders. In his place, the Australian stars were a journeyman (Wayne Arthurs), an inexperienced teenager (Lleyton Hewitt), and a former David Cup outcast (Mark Philippoussis). Though his own country, the United States, did not prosper for long, Dwight Davis would surely have enjoyed most of what transpired in 1999: the story lines, the quality of play, and the enthusiasm of the crowd in Nice that made it difficult for doubles partners to hear each other, even when they were shouting from close range. Davis also would surely have been astonished at the continued growth of the competition he has launched by issuing a transatlantic challenge to the British in 1900. This book, written by International Herald Tribune sports correspondent and longtime New York Times contributor Christopher Clarey, is an extended and thoughtful examination of the matches and personalities that defined this special season. With much of its material gathered form exclusive interviews, it provides a unique perspective on the game's premier team event: an event that has been making tennis heroes and his troy for one hundred years.

Book excerpt: With candid text and never-before-published photographs, this dynamic yearbook captures the dramatic story lines, high quality of play, and enthusiasm of the crowd that characterize Davis Cup. Launched in 1900 as a match between the United States and Great Britain, Davis Cup has grown into the largest annual team competition in sport with more than 130 nations entered in the year 2002. With Patrick McEnroe returning as the coach for a U.S. team that has advanced to the semifinals with Pete Sampras and Andy Roddick in its lineup, the competition now generates more attention in the U.S. than ever before.

Book excerpt: A NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK A “thoroughly captivating biography” (The San Francisco Chronicle) of American icon Arthur Ashe—the Jackie Robinson of men’s tennis—a pioneering athlete who, after breaking the color barrier, went on to become an influential civil rights activist and public intellectual. Born in Richmond, Virginia, in 1943, by the age of eleven, Arthur Ashe was one of the state’s most talented black tennis players. He became the first African American to play for the US Davis Cup team in 1963, and two years later he won the NCAA singles championship. In 1968, he rose to a number one national ranking. Turning professional in 1969, he soon became one of the world’s most successful tennis stars, winning the Australian Open in 1970 and Wimbledon in 1975. After retiring in 1980, he served four years as the US Davis Cup captain and was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1985. In this “deep, detailed, thoughtful chronicle” (The New York Times Book Review), Raymond Arsenault chronicles Ashe’s rise to stardom on the court. But much of the book explores his off-court career as a human rights activist, philanthropist, broadcaster, writer, businessman, and celebrity. In the 1970s and 1980s, Ashe gained renown as an advocate for sportsmanship, education, racial equality, and the elimination of apartheid in South Africa. But from 1979 on, he was forced to deal with a serious heart condition that led to multiple surgeries and blood transfusions, one of which left him HIV-positive. After devoting the last ten months of his life to AIDS activism, Ashe died in February 1993 at the age of forty-nine, leaving an inspiring legacy of dignity, integrity, and active citizenship. Based on prodigious research, including more than one hundred interviews, Arthur Ashe puts Ashe in the context of both his time and the long struggle of African-American athletes seeking equal opportunity and respect, and “will serve as the standard work on Ashe for some time” (Library Journal, starred review).

The communication that exists within, about, and between these communities is at the heart of Communication Yearbook 28. This book draws from the broad range encompassed by the communication discipline to review literature that has something to say about community and what the communication discipline has to contribute to understanding this human connection. Offering state-of-the-art research, Communication Yearbook 28 presents: *an influence model addressing the most basic level of community--the personal relationship; *the literature on romantic and parent-child relationships at a distance; *community in terms of those working at home and telecommuting, running home-based businesses, and participating in online communities; *the communicative venue for community building and fragmentation; *social capital and tolerance; *the literature on collaboration, examining this communicative performance in community groups; *community as a foundation for the study of public relations theory and practice; *the visual images of community and what they suggest about these communities to those looking in from the outside; *the role new technology plays in maintaining community; and *community contexts. This book is an important reference on current research for scholars and students in the social sciences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new edition is even more comprehensive than last year's. The Almanac is exhaustively researched, and the final result is a book that contains the most complete record available of what has and is happening in Ireland and Northern Ireland. The 1999 edition has more information, more facts, and more statistics about what is happening on the island. It is a one-stop archive which covers every aspect of life on the island, from politics to profiles of Irish writers, from population figures to sports, from a detailed chronology of the year to famous last words. Included this year too are major articles from some of Ireland's leading academics, commentators, and public figures. Their insightful, sometimes controversial, but always thought-provoking pieces add considerably not only to the authority and reliability of the Almanac as a reference tool, but also to its usefulness as an up-to-date source for information on current events. Subjects are covered throughout the Almanac under a variety of headings, including: calendar of events; top news stories; quotes of the year; pictures of the year; chronology; obituaries; politics; history; personalities; geography and environment; population; counties and main towns; business and finance; industry, energy, and transportation; agriculture and forestry; tourism; health; law; religion; education; culture; arts; entertainment; media; sports; and useful information. The Irish Almanac is Ireland's ultimate reference book.
