Dashiell Sutherland, a former army intelligence officer, has a job interview in Seattle and must arrive by December 23. Though frantic to book a last-minute flight out of San Francisco, both are out of luck: Every flight is full, and there’s only one rental car available. Ashley and Dash reluctantly decide to share the car, but neither anticipates the wild ride ahead. At first they drive in silence, but forced into close quarters Ashley and Dash can’t help but open up. Not only do they find they have a lot in common, but there’s even a spark of romance in the air. Their feelings catch them off guard—never before has either been so excited about a first meeting. But the two are in for more twists and turns along the way as they rescue a lost puppy, run into petty thieves, and even get caught up in a case of mistaken identity. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story focuses on the protagonist, Mwana Mutota, who is a descendant of an ancient bloodline of kings of the Great Stone Empire. The son is in constant conflict with his conscious and subconscious mind since, in his dreams, he finds solace and peace, and this is embodied in the f irst scene, The Castle in the Sky. This is unlike when he awakens and finds life futile and existential, as evidenced by the second scene, Return to the Earth Realm. Dreams therefore present the highest form of existence as one is in their truest form and bound by no rules, sin, or flesh and present the only peace in the protagonists life. Life therefore revolves around the conflict of the internal (the soul that is only free in dreams) and the external (the body that is trapped on earth) that drives the protagonist to the brink of insanity as the plot unfolds. The Great Stone Empire presents an empire that, through colonialism and corruption, is economically and socially depleted to the point of widespread unemployment and poverty. Mwana Mutotaor rather The Son, as he prefers to call himselfon the request of Chaminuka (the guardian spirit of Nubian empires), is crowned king under the wings of the premiere of the empire (the last defiant Nubian leader against the west). The underlying battle of the story is of the sons of light versus the sons of darkness, a story that began from the dawn of time and is still ongoing. This is embodied in Mwana Mutota (the son of light) and his battle with Adam (the son of darkness), the deadly assassin hell-bent on ending Mwanas life. Gladys is Mwana Mutotas love, and yet they have not seen in each other in years. The platonic relationship presents the struggle of pure love in a corrupted world, and the desire to once more be together is Mwanas ultimate hope in life. Gladys is the descendant of the Mojaji queen who, in a past life, was married to the Mutota king; and they were separated through conspiracy and treachery. Gladys Mojaji and Mwana Mutota, therefore, represent mediums of the greatest spirit of the empire, which is Chaminuka, and form part of his trinity and their reuniting in the Earth realm represents a return to a lost virtue in the universe of the highest form, which is love. The last scene is called Return to Eden, as it captures a pure and lost Nubian love as the bodies and souls of the Mutota and Mojaji king and queen once more reunite. A perfect harmony is restored in the universe, and the two souls reunite in the spirit world. They walk hand in hand in the full allure of a spiritual garden full of the beauty of nature, and the two embrace in the earth realm. And the story reaches an end (for now).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Country to Nation tracks the emergence of the modern Japanese nation in the nineteenth century through the history of some of its local aspirants. It explores how kokugaku (Japan studies) scholars envisioned their place within Japan and the globe, while living in a castle town and domain far north of the political capital. Gideon Fujiwara follows the story of Hirao Rosen and fellow scholars in the northeastern domain of Tsugaru. On discovering a newly "opened" Japan facing the dominant Western powers and a defeated Qing China, Rosen and other Tsugaru intellectuals embraced kokugaku to secure a place for their local "country" within the broader nation and to reorient their native Tsugaru within the spiritual landscape of an Imperial Japan protected by the gods. Although Rosen and his fellows celebrated the rise of Imperial Japan, their resistance to the Western influence and modernity embraced by the Meiji state ultimately resulted in their own disorientation and estrangement. By analyzing their writings—treatises, travelogues, letters, poetry, liturgies, and diaries—alongside their artwork, Fujiwara reveals how this socially diverse group of scholars experienced the Meiji Restoration from the peripheries. Using compelling firsthand accounts, Fujiwara tells the story of the rise of modern Japan, from the perspective of local intellectuals who envisioned their local "country" within a nation that emerged as an empire of the modern world.

Book excerpt: The astronaut crime that shocked the world Star Crossed transports readers to the moment the news broke that one of America’s heroes, an astronaut who had flown aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery& just months before, had been arrested for a very bizarre crime. Lisa Nowak had driven 900 miles from Houston to Orlando to intercept and confront her romantic rival in an airport parking lot—allegedly using diapers on the trip so she wouldn’t have to stop. Nowak had been dating astronaut William “Billy” Oefelein when she learned that Oefelein was seeing a new girlfriend—U.S. Air Force Captain Colleen Shipman. The “astronaut love triangle” scandal quickly made headlines. The world watched as Nowak was dismissed from NASA, pleaded guilty to a felony, and received an “other than honorable” military discharge. An award-winning investigative reporter who covered Nowak’s criminal case, Kimberly Moore offers behind-the-scenes insights into Nowak’s childhood, her rigorous training, and her mission to space. Moore ventures inside the mind of the detective who studied the actions Nowak took that fateful February night. She includes never-before-told details of Nowak’s psychiatric diagnosis, taking a serious look at how someone so accomplished could spiral into mental illness to the point of possible attempted murder. This book spotlights the often-overlooked psychological health of astronauts, exploring how they are cared for by NASA doctors and what changes have been made in recent years to support space travelers on long-term missions. Expertly told, Moore’s story is a riveting journey inside the high-pressure world of one of America’s most elite agencies and the life of one beleaguered astronaut.
