Von Interesse sind darin aber nicht nur „ideologische Macht- oder Herrschaftsdiskurse“ und damit „politische Theologie,“ sondern insbesondere auch die militärischen Zusammenhänge und die Kriegssemantik im engeren Sinn. Dies erfolgt eingedenk der großen Bedeutung, die das Militär und der Krieg für die Herstellung und Aufrechterhaltung von Herrschaft in der Antike hatten, besonders bei Dynastiewechseln, etwa wie hier von der julisch-claudischen zur flavischen Dynastie. Diesen Wechsel zur flavischen Dynastie zeichnet die Autorin zunächst in einer umfassenden kontextuellen Analyse nach, nicht allein auf der Basis des Werkes von Josephus und antiken Historikern, sondern erstmals auch unter Einbezug zeitnaher Militärhistoriker. Die Rekonstruktion dieses durch Militär und Krieg erzielten Aufstiegs, der seinen krönenden Abschluss in der Machtergreifung und einem den Krieg beendenden Triumph in Rom fand, trägt sie dann an den Evangelientext heran, und stellt in der Erzählung des Protagonisten Jesus Christus vergleichbare politisch-militärische Inkodierungen fest, nicht zuletzt auch in Form von „hidden transcripts,“ welche diesen Herrschaftsantritt ebenfalls als einen Dynastiewechsel darstellen, nämlich von der herodianischen zur davidisch-messianischen Dynastie. Politisch-militärische Inkodierungen ließen sich in jeder Szene finden, so dass die Autorin das Repertoire von Anknüpfungsmöglichkeiten des markinischen Texts an den literarisch-historischen Kontext des ersten jüdisch-römischen Kriegs um viele, neue und oft auch plausiblere Deutungsangebote erweitert konnte. Inkodierungen stellte sie aber auch auf lexikalischer Ebene fest; denn nicht weniger als ein Drittel des markinischen Lexikons trägt im Blick auf seine Semantik auch oder ausschließlich militärische Bedeutung. Eine zentrale Rolle misst sie der sogenannten Passion Jesu zu. Denn zwar steht der Kreuzestod als Sinnbild für die militärische Niederlage, interpretiert man seinen Tod jedoch konsequent im Kontext des „Triumphzugs,“ dann wäre er auch als sühnendes und von Kriegsschuld reinigendes Opfer zu deuten. Und als solches – lässt sich schließen – hätte Jesus die religiös zwingende Voraussetzung für eine gottgewollte und siegreiche, durchaus auch militärisch zu verstehende Rückkehr geschaffen. Mk 12,28-34), which are quotations of Deut 6,4-5 and Lev 19,18, have their original OT meaning in the gospel of Mark or whether they acquire, besides this, a specific Markan enrichment. The study not only affirms such a specificity but also demonstrates its richness and depth. It establishes that the distinctiveness of the Markan conception of the love commandment is closely linked to the person of Jesus and is expressed in a multiplicity of data, both formal and thematic, which can be discovered in an integral reading of the gospel.The methodology employed is modem redaction-criticism which differs from classical Redaction-criticism in that it is synchronic and takes the text as it stands as a coherent and wholistic document to be understood in terms of itself and thus studies it in an integral reading. The investigation has two parts, involving four chapters and a general conclusion. Part I, comprising Ch I and Ch II, dwells on the OT meaning and context of the texts of the love commandment and provides a lucid account of them which serves as the basis for its study in the gospel. Part II researches the commandment in Mk in two chapters. Of these Ch III represents the gospel's theoretical interpretation of the commandment and Ch IV Jesus' fulfillment of it in the Passion, his instruction by example. Together, they complete Mark's total interpretation of the love comandment. Following this, the general conclusion sees the Markan specificities in a unifying theological vision defined by the gospel's Christology and closes by drawing its consequences. George Keerankeri was born on 10 December 1944 at Kothanalloor in Kerala, India. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1962 and was ordained a priest in 1974. He holds an M.A. in Social-Cultural Anthropology and completed his Licentiate in Sacred Scripture (LSS) at the Pontifical Biblical institute, Rome in 1979. Ever since he is a lecturer of the New Testament at Vidyajyoti College of Theology, the Jesuit Faculty of Theology in Delhi, India.

Drawing on modern explorations of social memory, Sandra Huebenthal presents a model for reading biblical texts as collective memories. She demonstrates that the Gospel of Mark is a text evolving from collective narrative memory based on recollections of Jesus’s life and teachings. Huebenthal investigates the principles and structures of how groups remember and how their memory is structured and presented. In the case of Mark’s Gospel, this includes examining which image of Jesus, as well as which authorial self-image, this text as memory constructs.
