Book excerpt: Sheridan Adams, young, attractive, but saddened by disillusionment, is totally unlike the fat, smiling, middle-aged housekeeper Richard Hayden has in mind when he advertises in the local paper. A young widower, left alone with his small son Dick, he badly needs someone to look after his home. Sherry, though she may not be quite the person he has pictured, suits the post admirably. Having found a home for herself and her little daughter Anne, she is able to forget her troubles for a time. But her tranquillity is short-lived and it is only after many misunderstandings that Sherry can find true happiness. A compelling classic romance from the inimitable Patricia Robins, first published in 1953 and now available for the first time in eBook.

Book excerpt: This suspenseful tale of a glamorous marriage, a reckless affair, and a vengeful obsession is “deliciously readable” (Daily Mail). Tom and Octavia Fleming glitter among the chattering classes of London in the late 1990s. Tom, a brilliant political strategist, and Octavia, an equally talented charity consultant, appear to have it all—good looks, money, success, and three pretty children—everything but precious time together. The truth is Tom is having an affair—and when Octavia realizes it, she plots her revenge against her husband. But nothing prepares Octavia for the identity of Tom’s mistress, and her misdemeanors hardly compare to the revenge enacted by the other woman after Tom calls it off . . . Described by Dominick Dunne as a writer “with verve and heart, immersing the reader in a world of engrossing and unforgettable glamour and passion,” and praised by Barbara Taylor Bradford as “marvelously engrossing,” Penny Vincenzi presents a novel packed with twists, trysts, and thrills. “Exposes the cracks in a British ‘power marriage’ and charts the frightening evolution of a spurned woman’s love into a dangerous obsession . . . [A] deft, swift contemporary epic.” —Publishers Weekly

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Farewell to Arms – Lieutenant Frederic Henry, an American medic, is serving in the Italian Army during the First World War. It is the start of winter when a Cholera epidemic kills thousands of soldiers. Frederic has a brief visit to Gorizia where he meets with other army fellows and the priest. His friend, Surgeon Rinaldi, takes him to a British hospital where Frederic is introduced to Catherine Barkley, an English nurse. However, over the course of the war Henry's duty as a soldier begins to interfere with his love with Catherine. Situations get so murky and tense that Henry is forced to becomea deserter. Will the two ever meet again or will the war be the end of everything? For Whom the Bell Tolls– The novel tells the story of Robert Jordan, a young American volunteer attached to a Republican guerrilla unit during the Spanish Civil War. As a dynamiter, he is assigned to blow up a bridge during an attack on the city of Segovia. It was published just after the end of the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939), whose general lines were well known at the time. It assumes the reader knows that the war was between the government of the Second Spanish Republic, which many foreigners went to Spain to help and which was supported by the Soviet Union, and the Nationalist faction, which was supported by Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy. It was commonly viewed as the dress rehearsal for the Second World War.

Book excerpt: The Lost Generation: The Sun Also Rises and A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway, The Great Gatsby by Francis Scott Fitzgerald, Death of a Hero by Richard Aldington, Under Fire: The Story of a Squad by Henri Barbusse. After the First World War, special people returned to their home towns from the front. When the war began, they were still boys, but duty forced them to defend the homeland. "Lost Generation" - as they were called. This concept is used today when we talk about writers who worked during the breaks between the First and Second World Wars, which became a test for all of humanity and were almost all beaten out of their usual, peaceful rut. One of the themes that commonly appears in the authors' works is decadence and the frivolous lifestyle of the wealthy. Writers of the lost generation raise in their works the problem of young people who returned from the war and did not find their home, their relatives. Questions about how to live, how to remain human, how to learn to enjoy life again - this is what is paramount in this literary movement. Table of Contents: 1. Ernest Hemingway: A Farewell to Arms 2. Ernest Hemingway: The Sun Also Rises 3. Francis Scott Fitzgerald: The Great Gatsby 4. Richard Aldington: Death of a Hero 5. Henri Barbusse: Under Fire: The Story of a Squad
