Book excerpt: What does it mean to say that poetry is dark? How does the presence of darkness give meaning to literary works? Such questions sit at the centre of this study of Lord Byron, a man who has been characterised as intrinsically dark by generations of scholars. This is the first book to offer a comprehensive survey of Byron's darkness, producing new and innovative readings of his poetry by exploring how darkness (both literal and figurative) helps to structure his work's ideological topography and facilitates the exchange of ideas between its different ideological systems. Canvassing a variety of issues relevant to a number of different manifestations of darkness, the study explores such diverse topics as the relationship between sublime aesthetics and the gendering of desire, the connection between darkness and Byron's Scottish nationalism and the influence of blackness on his engagement with the Orient. With such a broad focus in mind, it also engages with texts that represent Byron's oeuvre in its broadest sense, engaging not only with canonical texts such as Manfred and Don Juan, but also selections from Byron's juvenilia, the Oriental Tales and his letters and journals, as well as surveying the critical reviews that helped to influence the colour of his work and its later reception.

Book excerpt: "More than forty years ago, J. R. R. Tolkien, in his essay 'On Fairy Stories,' stated the case for the vital role of fantasy in offering us escape from the drabness of the 'real world.' Since then, his words have been borne out by the tremendous popularity and increasing influence of this fascinating genre. 'Dark Imaginings' is both an eloquent demonstration of the power of fantasy and a pioneering illumination of the Gothic style. In these sixteen tales by some of the greatest masters of fantasy fiction--some already acknowledged classics, others remarkable new discoveries--the shadowy hues of the Gothic are blended with the vivid shades of the fantastic to produce effects as uncanny and eerie as any in the realm of letters. Whether the reader is transported into the self-contained worlds of wonder, sent back into the darkest reaches of time, or faced with nightmare horror amid the chillingly familiar landscape of the contemporary scene, one element is constant: Each of these sixteen masterpieces offers an experience as inescapable and unforgettable as a dream of terror come hauntingly true."--Pg. Book excerpt: The untold story of Sammy Davis, Jr.: This incisive biography and sweeping cultural history conjures "the many worlds [Davis, Jr.] traversed, and shows how the issue of race, in his own mind and in the minds of his fans and detractors, shaped his career and life" (The New York Times). For decades one of America’s most recognizable stars, the real Sammy Davis, Jr. has long remained hidden behind the persona the performer so vigorously generated—and so fiercely protected. Here Wil Haygood brings Davis’s life into full relief against the backdrop of an America in the throes of racial change. He made his living entertaining white people but was often denied service in the very venues he played, and in his broad and varied friendships—not to mention his romances—Davis crossed racial lines in ways few others had. In Black and White vividly draws on painstaking research and more than two hundred and fifty interviews to trace Davis, Jr.’s journey from the vaudeville stage to Broadway, Hollywood, and, of course, Las Vegas. It is an important record of a vanished America—and of one of its greatest entertainers.

Book excerpt: In Let Go and Live in the Now, best-selling author Guy Finley brings the great Wisdom Teachings of centuries past into our lives in an intimate, accessible way. Each chapter of Let Go and Live in the Now tackles a hurt that keeps us from experiencing inner peace and happiness. Every chapter includes a brief essay and a contemporary teaching story followed by exercises to help readers incorporate the teaching into everyday life. Each chapter ends with "Ask the Masters," a question-and-answer format with such historical and modern-day spiritual masters as Buddha, St. Augustine, G.I. Gurdjieff, Henry David Thoreau, Peter Matthiessen, and Jeanne Guyon. "It only seems as though there's something more important for you to do than just quietly be yourself," writes Guy Finley. Imagined heavens never last, but eternal principles empower readers to live in "the now." From the first story of Katie, her broken heart, and the doctor who shows her how to heal it to the very last lesson of Paul who relocates himself from the city to the country and still can't see "the forest for the trees," readers see themselves in these eloquent retellings of ancient spiritual principles. Guy Finley is the best-selling author of The Secret of Letting Go, The Essential Laws of Fearless Living, and 35 other works that have sold over a million copies in 18 languages worldwide. His work has been featured on hundreds of radio and TV networks including NBC, CBS, ABC, CNN, NPR, and PBS. Guy has spent the last 30 years showing individuals the authentic path to a higher life filled with happiness, success, and true love. Finley lives and teaches in Merlin, Oregon where he is Director of non-profit Life of Learning Foundation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Insurgency and Counterinsurgency in the Nineteenth Century examines insurgency and counterinsurgency across the globe in the nineteenth century. The volume includes chapters from distinguished and rising historians from Europe, North and South America and covers irregular wars in Spain, Ireland, France, Latin America, China, USA, Africa, Central Asia and Burma. The authors explore links between insurgencies and nationalism, including learning curves and emulation in counterinsurgency. With a special emphasis on non-Western warfare, this volume includes case studies such as the Katanga and White Lotus rebellions largely unknown to Western readers. The military history of the nineteenth century thus reveals much more than the symmetrical warfare of Napoleon, Grant and Moltke. This volume shows the commonalities of responses more than their differences and refracts these through themes which crop up repeatedly in different times and places. These themes include common problems and solutions: the challenge of commanding local intelligence networks; public opinion; millenarianism, magic and religion; technology; ‘hearts and minds’; the legal framework of state violence; racial stereotypes and patterns of forgetting and remembering guerrilla conflicts. The first recent study to examine Western and non-Western warfare in equal measure, stressing the prevalence of commonalities between guerrilla warfare and counterinsurgency across the globe, Insurgency and Counterinsurgency in the Nineteenth Century will be of great interest to scholars of military and strategic studies, as well as modern military history. It was originally published as a special issue of Small Wars & Insurgencies.

Book excerpt: One of the forgotten nineteenth-century women writers, Mathilde Franziska Anneke (1817-1884) was a political activist, writer, and educator who experienced exciting historical times in both Germany and the United States (Wisconsin). Writing on the eve of the German Revolution of 1848, she founded a short-lived revolutionary newspaper and even rode into battle. Later, in exile in the United States, she used her journalistic and oratory skills in support of the women's suffrage and anti-slavery movements. This book is an excellent supplemental reading for women's studies and history classes as well as German literature in translation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By day, Monica Holy’s life looks like millions of others. She paints, jogs, talks to friends, and worries about her children. Monica’s nightlife is a different story. Since birth, she has entered extraordinary worlds of consciousness through the portal of lucid dreams. While there, she conducts souls to the other side and to the light, teaches, guides, and heals. She enters those non-ordinary realities not just to explore them, but to work on behalf of the human community. In Fringe Dweller on the Nightshift, she eloquently recounts her psychic and spiritual work with the troubled dead, the newly dead or those about to die – especially children – to provide emergency relief. She also brings back messages from the world beyond this one, by offering each and every one of us inspiration and ideas for honoring our feelings and connecting to the divine expression of all that is. Ultimately, we will all see The Grid (chapter 10): the invisible reality beyond our five senses that underlies all physical form as we know it. Fringe Dweller on the Nightshift combines cosmic adventure with down-to-earth practical information – part art, part memoir, part philosophy, part guidance, this book is a work of the heart.
