Book excerpt: “Like the A-10 aircraft she flew in combat, retired colonel and fighter pilot Martha McSally is a gritty individual who loves our Air Force and personified its core values of excellence, integrity, and service before self, while standing up to make it a better institution for everyone who serves. How to be resolute, do the right thing, persevere, find gratitude, and learn compassion are just some of the lessons in her inspirational life story.” —Ron FOGLEMAN, General (ret.), U.S. Air Force; former Air Force Chief of Staff Combining the soulful honesty of Make Your Bed with the inspiring power of You Are a Badass, America’s first female combat jet pilot and Arizona Senator Martha McSally shows you how to clear the runway of your life: embrace fear, transform doubt, succeed when you are expected to fail, and soar to great heights in this motivational life guide. Martha McSally is an extraordinary achiever whose inner strength and personal principles have helped her overcome adversity throughout her life. Initially rejected from Air Force flight school because she was too short, she refused to give up, becoming the first female fighter pilot to fly in combat and the first to command a combat fighter squadron in United States history. During her twenty-six-year military career, she fought to free American servicewomen stationed in the Middle East from restrictions requiring them to don full-body, black abayas and ride in the backs of cars – and won. McSally has continued to serve America, first in the House of Representatives, and now as a U.S. Senator from Arizona. McSally is also a survivor. She shares how her experiences propelled her to become a fighter for justice in and out of the cockpit. In this powerful, uplifting book, McSally reflects on her successes and failures, shares key principles that have guided her, and reveals invaluable lessons to break barriers, thrive through darkness, and make someone proud in your life. “Courage isn’t magic or genetics. It is a choice. By choosing to do things afraid, you discover your own power to overcome.” Filled with fresh stories and insights, Dare to Fly will help each of us find the courage inside to break our barriers, endure turbulence, and keep flying high.

Soon Sylvia learns how to fly—how to dance—and how to dare to dream. Includes a foreword from Sylvia Townsend, a brief history of the bookmobile, an author’s note, and a further reading list.

Book excerpt: On a warm Autumn day in 1986, Janine Shepherd's life was changed forever. Her dreams of representing Australia in the Winter Olympics were shattered when she was hit by a truck during a cycling training session in the Blue Mountains. Her neck and back were broken in four places, as were her right arm, collarbone and five ribs. Her right leg had been ripped open, she had sustained massive internal injuries, severe lacerations to her abdominal area, and had lost five litres of blood. The bleeding alone was enough to kill her. Doctors warned her parents that she was not expected to survive her ordea; if by some miracle she did, she would certainly never walk again. But never was a word Janine Shepherd refused to hear, let alone believe, and her remarkable recovery, recounted in her bestselling book NEVER TELL ME NEVER, was a testament to Janine's indomitable spirit and extraordinary courage. Now Janine's story continues in Dare to Fly, a heartwarming and inspirational account of her journey of recovery - not only physical, but also emotional and spiritual - and of the people she has met along the way who were inspired by Janine and who, in turn, continue to encourage and inspire her. As she writes in DARE TO FLY, 'We all need to know that no matter what happens to us in this life, we are never alone.' Janine Shepherd's story will truly move us all to dare to fly.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bud Anderson is a flyers flyer. The Californians enduring love of flying began in the 1920s with the planes that flew over his fathers farm. In January 1942, he entered the Army Air Corps Aviation Cadet Program. Later after he received his wings and flew P-39s, he was chosen as one of the original flight leaders of the new 357th Fighter Group. Equipped with the new and deadly P-51 Mustang, the group shot down five enemy aircraft for each one it lost while escorting bombers to targets deep inside Germany. But the price was high. Half of its pilots were killed or imprisoned, including some of Buds closest friends. In February 1944, Bud Anderson, entered the uncertain, exhilarating, and deadly world of aerial combat. He flew two tours of combat against the Luftwaffe in less than a year. In battles sometimes involving hundreds of airplanes, he ranked among the groups leading aces with 16 aerial victories. He flew 116 missions in his old crow without ever being hit by enemy aircraft or turning back for any reason, despite one life or death confrontation after another. His friend Chuck Yeager, who flew with Anderson in the 357th, says, In an airplane, the guy was a mongoosethe best fighter pilot I ever saw. Buds years as a test pilot were at least as risky. In one bizarre experiment, he repeatedly linked up in midair with a B-29 bomber, wingtip to wingtip. In other tests, he flew a jet fighter that was launched and retrieved from a giant B-36 bomber. As in combat, he lost many friends flying tests such as these. Bud commanded a squadron of F-86 jet fighters in postwar Korea, and a wing of F-105s on Okinawa during the mid-1960s. In 1970 at age 48, he flew combat strikes as a wing commander against communist supply lines. To Fly and Fight is about flying, plain and simple: the joys and dangers and the very special skills it demands. Touching, thoughtful, and dead honest, it is the story of a boy who grew up living his dream.

But when Tex dies in a freak accident, Sally must make her own way in the world. She enrolls in the U.S. military's Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) program at a special school known as Avenger, where she learns to fly the biggest, fastest, meanest planes. She also reluctantly becomes involved with Beau Bayard, a flight instructor and aspiring writer who seems to offer her everything she could want. Despite her obvious mastery of flying, many members of the military are unable to accept that a “skirt” has any place in a cockpit. Soon Sally finds herself struggling against a high-powered Washington lawyer that wants to close down Avenger once and for all.

Book excerpt: Distinguished by grace, self-assurance, and a spirit that welcomed adventure, Amelia Earhart made her mark on aviation history with daring feats and record-breaking journeys. From the moment she first set foot in an airplane, she knew that her destiny was to fly. Impelled by the freedom, beauty, and sheer pleasure of flying, Earhart refused to accept the prevailing view that women were not meant to pursue such nontraditional endeavors as piloting airplanes. Years later, when she successfully landed her single-engined Lockheed Vega in Ireland after taking off from North America, she became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic ocean--and the second person of either gender to do so, after Charles Lindbergh. Other accomplishments followed, including being the first person to fly alone from Hawaii to California. Her disappearance on the final leg of her attempt to circumnavigate the globe has added to Earhart's mystique. But her achievements in life left a legacy that outshines the unsolved mystery of her death. Women Who Dare: Amelia Earhart explores the life of a brilliant and courageous aviatrix who contributed greatly to the aviation industry and to the advancement of opportunities for women. Dozens of photographs and historical images illustrate the story of a woman who dared to live according to her own principle that "to live fully requires courage to take some risks."

Book excerpt: 'The utterly inspirational story behind one of our country's most superb journalists. To have played even the tiniest of roles in helping to ignite Lisa's early fire for journalism gives me more joy than she will ever know.' LISA WILKINSON Lisa Millar has spent her whole life showing up, getting things done and making things happen. As a child growing up in country Queensland, she dreamed of a big life. Working as a foreign correspondent gave her that, but it also meant confronting the worst that humanity can bring. Three decades as a journalist witnessing tragedy had a cost. And an ever-escalating fear of flying threatened to rob her of her ability to work at all. For that young girl from small-town Kilkivan, who had to push herself to keep going, push herself to conquer fear, push herself to tell important stories, finally came the realisation that sometimes all we really need is what we already have. And she shows us that we are all stronger and more resilient than we give ourselves credit for if we just dare to let ourselves fly. 'A heartfelt and intimate memoir, recounted with a warmth and honesty . . . Through Millar's eyes, I saw the world anew - yes, filled with tragedy and sadness as so often it is, but also with adventure and promise and friendship and joy.' WEEKEND AUSTRALIAN 'While this memoir charts how trauma manifests in the life of a foreign correspondent, it is equally about Lisa Millar's determination to face her fears.' SATURDAY AGE

Loujain watches her beloved baba attach his feather wings and fly each morning, but her own dreams of flying face a big obstacle: only boys, not girls, are allowed to fly in her country. Yet despite the taunts of her classmates, she is determined to do it—especially because Loujain loves colors, and only by flying can she see the color-filled field of sunflowers her baba has told her about. Eventually, he agrees to teach her, and Loujain's impossible dream becomes reality—and soon other girls dare to learn to fly.
