Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Open access edition: DOI 10.6069/9780295749013 At first glance, medicine and poison might seem to be opposites. But in China’s formative era of pharmacy (200–800 CE), poisons were strategically employed as healing agents to cure everything from abdominal pain to epidemic disease. Healing with Poisons explores the ways physicians, religious figures, court officials, and laypersons used toxic substances to both relieve acute illnesses and enhance life. It illustrates how the Chinese concept of du—a word carrying a core meaning of “potency”—led practitioners to devise a variety of methods to transform dangerous poisons into effective medicines. Recounting scandals and controversies involving poisons from the Era of Division to the Tang, historian Yan Liu considers how the concept of du was central to how the people of medieval China perceived both their bodies and the body politic. He also examines the wide range of toxic minerals, plants, and animal products used in classical Chinese pharmacy, including everything from the herb aconite to the popular recreational drug Five-Stone Powder. By recovering alternative modes of understanding wellness and the body’s interaction with foreign substances, this study cautions against arbitrary classifications and exemplifies the importance of paying attention to the technical, political, and cultural conditions in which substances become truly meaningful. Healing with Poisons is freely available in an open access edition thanks to TOME (Toward an Open Monograph Ecosystem) and the generous support of the University of Buffalo.

Book excerpt: Within the context of a larger discussion of Dao Yin, Damo Mitchell teaches and explains the Dragon Dao Yin exercises, a set of four short sequences designed to work with the subtle energies of the spine and lead pathogenic energies out of the body. More 'Yang' in nature than Qi Gong, Dao Yin focuses on outwards movements and strong internal cleansing. The book highlights this important distinction and covers the theory, history and development of Dao Yin exercises, as well as the relationship between Chinese medical theory and Dao Yin training. One chapter is devoted to problems related to stagnation and the flow of Qi, and explains the different causes and forms of stagnation. Later chapters look at breathing patterns and the extension of Yi, opening the joints, and rotating the bones and spine. Damo Mitchell also discusses stillness as the source of movement, the philosophical significance of the Dragon and the pearl, and the means of hardwiring Dao Yin exercises into the energetic body. Central to the discussion is the concept of the spine, and how to wake it up. For the first time in the English language, the Dragon exercises – Awakening, Swimming, Soaring and Drunken – are described in detail, with photographs and step-by-step instructions on each of the exercises as individual therapeutic exercises and as a form.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Daoyin, the traditional Chinese practice of guiding the qi and stretching the body is the forerunner of Qigong, the modern form of exercise that has swept through China and is making increasing inroads in the West. Like other Asian body practices, Daoyin focuses on the body as the main vehicle of attainment; sees health and spiritual transformation as one continuum leading to perfection or self-realization; and works intensely and consciously with the breath and with the conscious guiding of internal energies. This book explores the different forms of Daoyin in historical sequence, beginning with the early medical manuscripts of the Han dynasty, then moving into its religious adaptation in Highest Clarity Daoism. After examining the medieval Daoyin Scripture and ways of integrating the practice into Tang Daoist immortality, the work outlines late imperial forms and describes the transformation of the practice in the modern world. Presenting a rich crop of specific exercises together with historical context and comparative insights, Chinese Healing Exercises is valuable for both specialists and general readers. It provides historical depth and opens concrete details of an important but as yet little-known health practice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many exercise programs out there to choose from; however, choosing martial arts as that exercise venue is a big decision. As in all sports, dedication and discipline are required in your chosen sport to become good. In choosing the martial arts as your pursuit, that dedication and discipline is at a very high standard. It becomes a lifetime devotion which is geared towards a code of honor, a creed to follow, and responsibility to carry your skills to a higher human level. This book is not just about martial arts or about you making a survival choice regarding a self-defense endeavor; it is also about life and longevity as well as how to stay and maintain that state of physical well-being. This maintenance or balance formulates the essence of “Taijiquan” the philosophical concept for both its defense training and its health benefits. I hope in reading this book it will help you to choose wisely. What would happen if the masters of different martial art’s academies join forces to devise one master form of martial arts? This should include all the martial arts systems, styles, philosophies, and functionalities and to embrace the hidden secrets of their individual styles and formulate one master super self-defense universal system that is all incorporating and encompassing. A structure in which entails the very essence of human survival. This new system of martial arts would maintain the subsistence for the sacredness and protection of our evolutionary way. This “way” is the continuation of the human-species. Longevity depends on maintaining your survival skills and survival skills depend on maintaining your health. It is all tied together and there is no separation of these factors. This book is about that; to maintain and live a healthy and long life through the use of the martial arts format. I called the union above “The Yoda System.”
