Book excerpt: Promptly at the end of three days of fasting Boone knew that the war party would set forth no matter what the weather. It was a bad omen otherwise. In single file, at spaced intervals, the painted warriors would move from the town, firing their rifles slowly one after the other... -from Chapter XIV This semifictionalized biography of the legendary frontiersman, first published in 1921, rings with desperate dialogue ("We'll be caught if we stay here... the Indians are not far behind us") and gung-ho wilderness adventure. From Boone's childhood along the banks of the Delaware River-full of escapades "any normal and healthy boy would have revelled in"-to his cantankerous old age, in which he chafed to go further west to escape the encroachment of civilization into his beloved Kentucky, this is a highly entertaining life of the man who was never lost, but was "bewildered once for three days." American writer STEWART EDWARD WHITE (1873-1946) wrote of his own wilderness adventures in The Claim Jumpers (1901) and The Blazed Trail (1902). His historical novels include Gold (1913), The Gray Dawn (1915), and The Rose Dawn (1920).

Book excerpt: When the Atlantic seaboard was winning its Revolution against England, and the new West, undecided which camp to join, hung back, one mane stood out among the scattered handful of pioneers who were opening the great road to the plains… …a stirring blend of biography, Americana, and history restoring in complete, human, authentic detail one of the most thrilling stories in our American past. In pages as exciting as an old dime novel, John Bakeless introduces to us all Daniel Boone—trapper, Indian fighter, contact to the forest people, surveyor of the Dark and Bloody Ground, law-giver to unruly frontier settlers, pathfinder, hunter… a figure already half-legendary in his own time. To explore the legend and recreate reality is John Bakeless’s achievement in this unmatched adult biography of a man and an era. Drawing upon much hitherto unpublished material, he sorts fact and fancy to provide this documented portrait…and at the same time, a stirring chronicle that captures the spirit of these uniquely America, heroic decades.

Book excerpt: The Instant New York Times Besteller National Bestseller "[The] authors’ finest work to date." —Wall Street Journal The explosive true saga of the legendary figure Daniel Boone and the bloody struggle for America's frontier by two bestselling authors at the height of their writing power—Bob Drury and Tom Clavin. It is the mid-eighteenth century, and in the thirteen colonies founded by Great Britain, anxious colonists desperate to conquer and settle North America’s “First Frontier” beyond the Appalachian Mountains commence a series of bloody battles. These violent conflicts are waged against the Native American tribes whose lands they covet, the French, and the mother country itself in an American Revolution destined to reverberate around the world. This is the setting of Blood and Treasure, and the guide to this epic narrative is America’s first and arguably greatest pathfinder, Daniel Boone—not the coonskin cap-wearing caricature of popular culture but the flesh-and-blood frontiersman and Revolutionary War hero whose explorations into the forested frontier beyond the great mountains would become the stuff of legend. Now, thanks to painstaking research by two award-winning authors, the story of the brutal birth of the United States is told through the eyes of both the ordinary and larger-than-life men and women who witnessed it. This fast-paced and fiery narrative, fueled by contemporary diaries and journals, newspaper reports, and eyewitness accounts, is a stirring chronicle of the conflict over America’s “First Frontier” that places the reader at the center of this remarkable epoch and its gripping tales of courage and sacrifice.

CHAPTER XVI ONE thjig Boone's expedition had clearly shown: the calm interval did not mean that the Indians had abandoned their project. The warriors were gathered at the Shawnee town, and shortly they set forth under the command of Blackfish. There were four hundred and forty-four of them, and with them twelve whites as military advisers. The chief of these was a French Canadian, a lieutenant named De Quindre. A number of very important and famous chiefs were with the expedition: such as Black Bird, whom Patrick Henry called "the great Chippewa"; Moluntha, who had led the Shawnees in all the really serious invasions of Kentucky; and Catahecassa, who had led in Braddock's defeat. Pompey, the negro, was also along, valuable mainly because he spoke English, not otherwise highly considered, but a member of the tribe for all that. The equipment was that usual to an expedition of this kind, simple, confined to the rifle and the corn wallet for the warriors. But, contrary to the usual custom, almost incredibly contrary, was the presence of a number of packhorses. They carried extra ammunition; but that was only in order that they might carry something. Their intended use was quite different. You remember that when Boone surrendered at the Salt Licks he gained immunity for his men by suggesting that in the warmer season it might be possible to move all the inhabitants peaceably to the Shawnee country there to live in adoption, and that he suggested, further, that packhorses be brought for the purpose of transporting the children and the household goods? Well, in spite of Boone's escape the savage* seem to have retained some lingering hope thai the original plan would be followed. They hated to give Boone up. They liked him, and they admired...
