Book excerpt: This culminating project explores alternative approaches to the 12-step model of recovery and proposes dance/movement therapy informed movement explorations to accompany the step work. The literature review explores three alternative approaches to the 12-step model including mindfulness, secular, and feminist approaches. These alternative models are included to offer more inclusive, strengths-based, and culturally competent approaches to substance use treatment. Stemming from the research and literature, dance/movement therapy informed movement explorations were created to accompany each of the steps. The goal of the movement explorations is to deepen the step work by utilizing mind-body connectivity which is commonly ruptured during the process of addiction. Incorporating dance/movement therapy into addictions treatment can highlight themes of community support, self-inquiry, and emotional regulation on a body level, which are all themes included in the 12-step model. The author's intention is to add to the dialogue around dance/movement therapy and substance use treatment emphasizing the 12-step model of recovery, with hopes to increase accessibility to the creative arts therapies within this population.
