Taking Jamaican dancehall music as its prime example, DanceHall reveals a complex web of cultural practices, politics, rituals, philosophies, and survival strategies that link Caribbean, African and African diasporic performance. Combining the rhythms of reggae, digital sounds and rapid-fire DJ lyrics, dancehall music was popularized in Jamaica during the later part of the last century by artists such as Shabba Ranks, Shaggy, Beenie Man and Buju Banton. Even as its popularity grows around the world, a detailed understanding of dancehall performance space, lifestyle and meanings is missing. Author Sonjah Stanley Niaah relates how dancehall emerged from the marginalized youth culture of Kingston’s ghettos and how it remains inextricably linked to the ghetto, giving its performance culture and spaces a distinct identity. She reveals how dancehall’s migratory networks, embodied practice, institutional frameworks, and ritual practices link it to other musical styles, such as American blues, South African kwaito, and Latin American reggaetòn. Book excerpt: Through a close re-examination of Eugene O’Neill’s oeuvre, from minor plays to his Pulitzer-winning works, this study proposes that O’Neill’s vision of tragedy privileges a particular emotional response over a more “rational” one among his audience members. In addition to offering a new paradigm through which to interpret O’Neill’s work, this book argues that O’Neill’s theory of tragedy is a robust account of the value of difficult theatre as a whole, with more explanatory scope and power than its cognitivist counterparts. This paradigm reshapes our understanding of live theatrical tragedy’s impact and significance for our lives. The book enters the discussion of tragic value by way of the plays of Eugene O’Neill, and through this study, Killian makes the case that O’Neill has refused to allow Plato to define the terms of tragedy’s merit, as the cognitivists have. He argues that O’Neill’s theory of tragedy is non-cognitive and locates the value of a play in its ability to trigger certain emotional responses from the audience. This would be of great interest to students and scholars of performance studies, literature and philosophy.

Here is a note I read somewhere as given by someone whom I thought knew the history of the subject in this book. He claimed, and I quote, that from its genesis as a public address system (P.A.) for political rallies, the sound system went on to become the basis of an enterprising dancehall scene. Here he discussed with others that the sound systems caught on not only because they provided an alternative to the lack of dancehall musicians, but also because they were more affordable to employ than bands. He further stated that because of their low cost, a group of friends could pool their savings, hire a sound system, buy some refreshments, and make some extra money by keeping a dance session and he also said during the same discussion, that sound systems allowed people who were previously excluded because of lower-class standing to enter the field of dance promotion and that the sound systems were the black and poor people's phenomena, because the black lower classes couldn't afford the band dance, and this is what they had. All poor people had to do was pay a sound system man about three or five pounds to bring his equipment, stick it on the sidewalk, inside the yard, and bring in the boxes of beer and you have a dance and make some money. Jamaican dance hall emerged out of reggae in the late 1970s and brought with it a new visual style characterized by bright colors and bold, hand-drawn lettering. One-of-a-kind, hand-painted posters advertising local parties and concerts have become a ubiquitous part of Jamaica’s landscape, nailed (illegally) to poles and trees across the island. Over the past three decades Walters, who has been called “the queen of Jamaican dance hall signs,” has amassed a collection of some 4,000 of these street posters, advertising local "bashments" held at bars, on beaches and in primary schools. Treated by most Jamaicans as simply a fact of life, the dance hall poster has until recently received little careful, critical attention; this volume begins to rectify that with essays by Vivien Goldman and others, alongside the posters themselves, reproduced one to a page in full color. The book also includes liner notes by and interviews with Muta Baruka and Mikie Bennett of Grafton Studios, and Tony Winkler, author of The Lunatic, as well as a compilation of original dance hall tracks curated by Mikie Bennett and Rory of Stone Love.
